Contract With Russia Had
Been Closed.
NEW YORK. Anrll 14. There wns nn
Slet'up In tho upfrnrd swing of the stock
Lmarket today, ana opcrAtlons once more
lvera on a large scale. Indications during
J trio morning session bclnir thnt tho dny
, vould be nhothcr tnltllonsharo affair, as
I'oales In the first hour were at thnt rate.
IhThnt the nubile was again at the helm
feirnn evident by tho largo number of or-
jBCrs Which commission houses had from
?oUtslders. Floor traders also nut out
fcorders, and thcro was a general rush to
, recover mocks by those who were scared
p-out by the sharp break In Bethlehem
Steel n. few mlmites beforo tho closo yes
jterclay. A great deal of excitement ac
companied trading and traders In many
i cases naa Borne difficulty in executing
orders,
Tho copper stocks were tho lenders and
demand for alt of these shares wns large.
Amalgamated Copner was the strongest
f In this groun. at one time belli nenrlv
ft points above the final of yesterday. In
Connection with Inn rlnn In thin lamin.
'. thero was a reiteration of tho rumor of
' n dissolution of tho company and a ills
' trlbutlon representing soma other assets
5 In addition to tho company's holdings of
P.Atiaeomta atnrlr. Chlnn. TUnh nwl AmnrU
can Smelting wcro nil up around two
points.
"When the Position of the cornier metal
m market is taken into consideration, It Is
! not hard to find the reason for the
Strength In the copper shares. A general
' revival In business throughout tho coun
try will add materially to tho domestic
demand for tho motal. Thoro Ib moro
talk being heard of 17-cent copper In tho
near future, and In Germany the prlco
lias touched it cents. Then, too, people
outsldo tho trade as well as thoso Inside
nrc beginning to realize moro and moro
that the Allies need tho metal and prob
ably will be willing to pay a good prlco
for It.
Around noon there was considerable
realizing by outsiders, and room traders
and sales wcro qulto heavy. Stocks wcro
woll -taken on tho decline, and tho ad
vancing, movement was resumed. Sur
prise was expressed at tho absorptive
Capacity of tho market Interest in tho
afternoon session switched to the Indus
, trials and specialties, and good ad
vances were shown In many of this class
of securities.
A prominent Issue was American Loco
motive common, which moved up B
points. Tho rise In this stock was accom
panied by reports that tho big order from
the Russian Government for shrapnel
and other supplies had been closed.
Movements In Bethlohem Steel again
attracted attention, tho prlco moving up
20 points on comparatively few Bales to
US, aiMy then sagging oft on succeeding
talcs. From tho high, as has been
the case right along, thcro was no news
to account for tho strength of the
stock. It Is understood that tho governors
of tho exchange have nuletlv launched
another Investigation Into tho movements
of tho stock. Thcro wa3 tho usual list
of rumors, with a new one added. This
was that an English syndicate is In the
field tb get the controllng Interest. In tho
afternoon session a drivo was started
against the stock on profit-taking salw
and the drop In the price was as rnnld
ns tho morning's advance, going within
three points of tho close of yesterday.
Tho feature of tho foreign exchange
market today was the weakness In
relchmarks, which declined at nn nt.-iL-n
to 8IH. the lowest point In history. Thero
was no demand for this exchange, and
this resulted In the decline.

Operation
Operation is a vital factor
in the continued value of a
security.
Inexperienced or inefficient
operation is a menace to
actual values and eliminates
the possible realization of
estimated values, such as
"good will" or "future earn
ings." The conservative investor
should satisfy himself that
those who operate where his
money is invested are not
only of high integrity but
thoroughly competent.
When it is impossible to
obtain such information, the
element of speculation enters.
The men upon whose per
formance our success is es
tablished are a guarantee of
safety and conservatism.
