Citire. In selecting Persia as the theme for lis poitlon
of tho Mnsquo of Primitive Peonies tho School
of Design for Women opened up large possi
bilities, nnd has cnrrled them out wonderfully
well. "The Doom of Jemshld," ns the episode
Is called, has been ndnpted by Mrs. AV. Yorke
Stevenson fiom tho Shad Nnmch, by Flrdaiisl,
the most famous poet of Persia, who wrote in
the hitter part of tho 10th century. Mrs. C.

A combination of the stars of the Plays and
Tlayers in the speaking parts nnd the nrtlstlc
designing and mnklng of costumo nnd sceneiy
by the students of the School of Design, with a
chorus of 40 of the girls, should be expected to
produce u strikingly effective result. And tho
dress rehearsal yesterday proved such nn
effect. The well-defined nnd gorgeous color
scheme of costume nnd scenes, all strictly cop
led from the ancient Persian, ndd much to tho
beauty and muslo of the lines taken from tho
lyrio of the poet, Flrdausl, tho Homer of tho
East.
For the past week the Art Gallery nnd class
rooms of the School of Design have resembled
dressmaking establishments nnd scene painting
workshops. Every detail of scenes nnd costumes
has been worked out fnlthfully by tho students.
In accordance with recognized authorities on
ancient Assyria and Persia. Although Flrdnusl
was more or less recent, this poem was about
the reign and fall of Jemshld. n mythical King
of early Persia. One scene will contain a beau
tiful reproduction of a curtain depicting tho
Hypostylo of Xerxes, In Persepolls. onco a chief
city of rersla, as drawn by Chlplez. in the
tlrst act tho colors are rich and gorgeous, red,
green, black, gold and purple, but the second
scene will be in strong contrast, a delicate com
bination of pale blue and gold.
The story Itself Is one of Intense Interest, re
luting the misfortunes of Jemshld. the great
mythical ruler of Persia, who, after a success,
ful reign of 70) years, became vainglorious and
Impious, and proclaimed himself the mightiest
power In the universe. Priests and people turn
from him, and he Is dethroned and escapes to
wander alone and miserable. The second scene
finds him In the Kingdom of Zabullstan, where
he meets the beautiful Princess who is destined
to marry him. Hla happiness Is short-lived
however, as the King of Zabullstan returns him
bound to Zohak, who then reigns In Jemshld's
former kingdom, and ho Is doomed to die,
Warriors, cup bearers, demons and dancers add
plcturesquo background and action. Special
dances are executed by Hiss Elizabeth Boun
tree and Miss Helen Kimmlg.
