WIDE FLUCTUATIONS
IN LOCAL MARKET
Removal of Restrictions on
Philadelphia Stocks Caused
Several Sharp Recessions.
Wide) nuctuntlons and the heaviest
trading since the war set In marked tho
resumption of business on the local ex
chango today. Probably the most Inter
esting moves wete a three-point Jump In
t'nlted Oas Improvement nnd weakness
ot the Philadelphia fompany group.
There was a 10-poinl drop In 1'nlted
Hallway Investment 5 per cent, bonds.
This camp with the removal of restric
tions on nil bonds. Tho decline ns
regarded by the street as cleaning up a
weak spot In the local ilnancinl situation.
This fltirmlso looked to bo correct, Judg
ing from tho subsequent action of tho
bonds, which rallied 2 points or more on
light sales. A 10-polnt fall In Pennsyl
vania Steel preferred was tho widest
lluctuat'on In slocks. This was not unex
pected nnd created little comment.
The removal of restrictions on many
local securities and (he reduction In mini
mum limits on others had a salutai-y
effect on the Philadelphia market today
In so far as broadening of the volume of
trading was concerned. The Immediate
result were shnrp drops In several Issues,
notably Oenernl Asphalt, which, at tho
opening, fell from IB to 21 on the sale of
1000 shares. The next transaction was
an odd lot nt 23 and thereafter tho price
ruled between 21 and 25, with considerable
dealing In the shares.
Latto Superior tumbled a point to c,
but nflerwnrd fully lecoveicd Its loss
and American Hallways loll from r.i to
SI. On the other hand, there was again
bilak demand for Pulled fins Impiovo
ment stock, this quotation rising rapidly
to 87'. Union Traction uis another utrcng
spot, and United States Steel was also
prominent In tho (railing. Storngn Ilat
tery sold cx-dlvldend and Pennsylvania
Salt declined Hi.
The Philadelphia Company group dis
played weakness, offerings of tho various
Issues finding few buyers In sight. Doubt
as 10 dividend! was the chief factor In
their depression. Oddly enough, tho re
moval of all restrictions on bonds failed
to have the same stimulating effect as It
did on stocks, and the trading In this class
of securities remained relatively dull ex
cept for tho break In United Hallway
linestnient 3s Philadelphia Company
consolidated lis changed bands In con
siderable (luunllllcs at 70 and 72',i, while
the scrip sold from 901- to 91. .
After the close the news reachpd tho
Streit that the Pittsburgh Hallways
Board h.nl decided to cancel the opei ri
ling agreement with tho United Traction
Company, of Pittsburgh, and would con-
j fer with the Philadelphia committee as to
a plan ior miure opvnmuiir.
On the whole, the Street was favorably
Impressed with the nctlon of the local
market, and tin comment most often
heaid was that all restrictions should
have been removed some time ago.

Important
It is important to every in
vestor to know the true
value in a security.
If it is earning a greater
return upon the money
actually invested than is
offered to him, he should find
out why he is deprived of the
benefit of such earnings.
It is important to every
investor to know at what
price the security he is con
sidering was originally of
fered and its relation to
actual value.
He should know how much
above the original price he is
asked to pay, and why.
He should know where the
difference went, and for what.
Our booklet treats of this.
