EVENING LEDGER-PHILA.DELPHIA TTAY MAttQH 19, 1915:
LONDON MINIMUM PRICES TO CONFORM WITH NEW YORK COPPER ADVANCED
COPPER SHARES LED
Advance In the Price of the
Metal Resulted in Upward
Swing Bethlehem Steel Up.
N'BW TOnK, Mnreli 10. All Interest In
the early trading fcn the Stock Exchange
today centered In the copper shares, and
they nere "the most actlo Issues, bclnR
the market leaders, All of the stocks of
the copper companies were up around
midday from n fraction to nearly two
points above the final of 5csterday. The
rise was caused by the nilvanco In tho
prlco of the metal to 16'4 cents, tho
highest point reached this year, and real
ization of tho fact that copper Is scarce
In Europe. Those In tho metal trade
know that the Allies must have copper,
and this Is fully evident to the Street
In gcnernl. Therefore, It Is pointed out,
thero will undoubtedly bo a larger move
ment In Europe Added to this arc In
dications of a revival In tho building In
dustry, This morning Inspiration Copper
made a new high record of 22'i.
The early strength was fully main
tained In the afternoon session, tho
copper stocks still being the leader at
higher prices. Supply of copper seemed
to bo small, while the short Interest wns
large. There wns n fairly good demand
for all classes of stock. A strong spe
cialty wns Continental Can, which rose
points to St on the statement that the
earnings were good
The stock market as a whole presented
a much better nppearance todny than for
Dome days past, paitly because of the
strength In the coppers, but more be
cause of the announcement from London
that minimum prices for American
securities on the London Stock Exchange
will now conform with the prices In ef
fect on the Now York Exchange, and
that they will bo reduced from time to
time as similar action Is taken In New
York, but New York Is to tako tho
Initiative In thin matter
Therefore, traders will now havo two
markets In which to trade in Amcrlcnn
securities, and tho pressure Is removed
from New York. This also should mate
rially aid in tho broadening out of the
trading In London Thero can be no
doubt that this step Is tho best one ot
taken to strengthen confidence, and trad
ers wero generally pleased with it.
Trading In stocks hero today was
broader and more active, and thero was
gcnernl absorption of securities, causing
an advance In prices and a better de
mand. Many shorts wero In evidence,
and their nctlon In covering their com
mitments nlso aided In the upward swing.
Bethlehem Steel made another new high
record today by selling up to GO's before
midday, up l from the final of yester
day. Thero was the usual talk of big
war orders, but no especial news to nc
count for the strength Rumor has It
that the annual report will make good
bull reading, ns It Is thought that It will
show largo earnings In the afternoon
session the stock went to 63, tho highest
on record.
Tho foreign exchange mnrkct was
steadier at the opening today, due to tho
announcement of further Imports of
J3,000,000 in gold from Canada Inter
national bankers arc of the opinion that
Imports of the yellow metal aro not et
at an end, and If our exports to Europe
keep piling up at the rate they havo been
it enn be very readily seen that mote
gold will havo to be sent here to offset
our big credit balance abroad.

U. S. STEEL REPORT
SHOWS BIO DEFICIT
Hopeful View Is Taken of tho
Future.
One of the worst years In tho history
of tho steel buslnesi was shown In tho
nnnuat report of tho United States Steel
Corporation, Tho company's gross vol
umo of business fell off $233,479,863, or
one-third of tho total business of 1913,
Tho effect of tho business depression
on labor wns Illustrated by tho laying off
of 43,663 men on tho average durlnp; that
period. Tho payroll was cut $41,826,263.
Tho Income account, preliminary flB
tires of which havo already been pub
lished, shows bnlanco of earnings avail
able for dividends of $23,496,76S, a doorcase-
of $57,720,217, or moro than 72
per cent Thoso earnings aro equivalent
to 64 per cent, on tho preferred nnd
nono on tho common, niralnst 7 por cent
earned on the preferred nnd 11.02 per
cent, on the common In 1913.
Tho corporation bIiows a deficit of
$16,971,983 for tho j car, ns compared with
a surplus of $15,582,183 for 1913. Tho cor
poration's undivided surplus at tho ond
of 1911 was $133,201,171. Net earnings for
tho year wero $81,746,517, a decrease of
$6u,42O,09S from 1913. .,,
rioducllon of Iron oro wan 17,034,981
tons, a decrease of 40 72 per cent, from
1913: of plB Iron. 10,032,457 tons, a dpcreaso

a decrcaso of 27.15 per cent.
JJccrcoso In production was especially
marked In materials used by railroads,
tho production of steel rails being 978,907
tons, a decreaso of 43 2 per cent.
A noto of hopefulness, however, Is
struck by Elbert II. Ornj, chairman ot
tho board, who says:
"Slnco January 1, 1915, thero hao been a
material Improvement In tho bookings of
export business and It Is at present equal
to tho avorngo of tho Inst threo years."
A striking feature ot tho report Is that
tho norago wages paid Increased. All
cmplojes, exclusive of general and sell

day, against $2 83 In 1913 For nil em
plovcs tho avcrngo rnto wns $2 97 a day,

to tho fact that tho general advance In

LITTLE CHANGE IX BUSINESS;
COLLECTIONS ARE SLOW
Some Improvement Noted in Iron and
Stieel Market.
Business conditions In this city show
very little change as n whole, although
thore Is slight Improvement noted In so 10
lines, notably Iron and steel and building
nnd contracting, according to the weekly
1 evlevv of R. G. Dun & Co.
Conditions In tho local yarn trade show
but little variation over previous week
Dealers report but Ilttlo activity. Somo
dealers, however, report that they havo
placed falr-slzcd orders for future deliv
ery. This appears to bo tho exception.
Collections aro also slow nnd most deal
ers aio watching their accounts carefully.
The wool markot still shows continued
Btrcngth and prices havo further ad
vanced Owing to their scarcity, fleece
wools aro exceedingly strong. Pulled
wools aro quiet, prices aro firmly held and
tho supply Is small. Tho demand for ter
ritory wools la also moderate nnd valued
firm. Thero aro but light offerings In
noils, which, however, aro In fair demand
and ilrm. AH foreign wools are very
strong.
lmjulry In hardware circle nt this time
shows that thero Is a dlfferenco of opinion
expressed as to existing conditions nnd
general outlook. Some quarters report a
fair amount of business has been trans
acted, whlio others state they havo about
held their own. It appears from somo
sources that tho general outlook Is fa
vorable, while others consulted are of tho
opinion that existing conditions will ma
terially affect this lino ot business for
some time to come.
Tho improvement In the building and
contracting lines, which started the Jlrst
of this month, continues, and thero U a
brighter outlook In this lino than for somo
months past. Somo dwelling operations
have ndded to the volume of building re
cently started, but at the samo'tlmo thero
Is a noticeable Improvement In the altera
tions, additions and new buildings for fac
tories, business buildings, etc. Figures are
roported close and some contracts taken
Indlcato very small margin of prollt.
