EVENING LF-DftER PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 1915:
cuffed prophet
stands by forecast
of 3 more snows
Simeon M. Mokemachcr
Is Undisturbed by the
Scoffing of Bliss and
Other Skepticsl
Bristling Onions Toll Talo.
Seer's Peculiarity of Rai
ment Dntes From Incident
of Early Youth and Appe
tite for Chocolate Eclair.
Old Simeon M. Mokcmacher sat on a
heap of atrophied onions In his llttlo liltl
den Enrtlen outsldo Andalusia, Pa., this
mornlnsr-htid squinted at tho slty. Thero
was a twlnklo In his bright eyes, for ho
had Just been risked If ho did not wish
to retract or modify his prediction that
there will be thrco moro snowstorms "cro
tho winter ends."
"Curlousost tiling- ever,' ho snld, "how
these cuffs on my overalls Ret tilled with
earth. I guess I loso two hours u day In
my experimental work cleaning them and
(Iftlng nnd Inspecting what I find tliero."
Tho reporter, who had forgotten tho
pathway nnd In consequence literally had
to fight hln way through tho barrier of
underbrush to tho garden, nodded po
litely nnd repented his query about tho
thrco snowstorms Mr. Jfokrmnchcr
looked up at tho sky ng.iln nnd smiled.
"How should 1 lcnow?" ho remarked,
with thinly veiled narrnsni. "I'm not a
Groundhog nnd I'm not a goosebone. nnd
your Georgo S. Bliss says nobody but a
groundhog anil gooscbono prophcto can
tell whether It's going to snow any moro.
Now, I told you onco thcro'd bo threo
moro snowstorms cro tho winter ends."
ONIONS' TELLTALE BRISTLES.
Tho old man suddonly dived forward
llko a trained acrobat nnd sprawled on
the ground. Ho whipped out a mlgnlfy
Ing glass with ono hand ,and an olcctrlo
torch with tho other. Ho scraped away
somo earth and then, training tho light
on nn onion, ho closed ono oyo nnd
squinted with tho other at tho vegctablo
through tho glass.
"Aha!" ho said. "Tho onion quivers.''
Jlr.Mokemachcr aroso and resumed dig
ging tho earth out of his overall cuffs.
Ho started to talk ns though to himself.
nnd by bending closo tho reporter caught
tho following:
"Tho bristles nro waving furiously.
Aha! It Is the connecting link betweon
vegctablo nnd animal life, but I shall not
reveal tho secret. Why should I?"
Abruptly ho halted and looked up.
"Curlousest thing over," ho resumed,
"how theso cuffs get filled with earth."
"Why don't you stop wearing them?"
ha Tvajj nsked.
, THE CUFFED PROPHET.
Tho Andoluslan prophet drew himself
alp majestically to his full G fept 4 Inches.
"Young man," ho Bald, glaring through
iho Inverted magnifying glass, "ns I seo
you now you arnt as big as my thumb.
Why should I wear cuffs. I am entitled
to my llttlo Idiosyncrasies. In tho great
world outsldo my garden of onions men
wear all manner of foolish things and so
do tho women, nnd also, I am told, tho
women powder their faces. All right, let
them, but I shall wear cuffs on my over
alls. "Why7" ho was asked.
"Onco upon a time," said Mr. Moke
macher, "when I was a llttlo boy, I re
ceived a $3 gold-pleca for a Christmas
gift. Thero was a holo In my pocket nnd
the coin disappeared. I mourned It for
two weeks. Then ono day as I was pass
ing a baker's window I suddenly devel
oped nn overpowering appctita for choco
late eclair, but, alas, I had no money, so
I sat down on tho curbstono to weep.
Unconsciously T ran my hand through
tho cuffs on my trousers, and there wns
the ?3 gol4-pIece. I wear them for their
utility. They savo nlonoy.
"But you mind what I say, young man,
yotfean laugh at your Georgo S. BUbs, for
there'll be three moro snowstorms cro tho
winter ends."
