'-r'" 6 EVENING LEDGER PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 1915. CAUSED WEAKNESS Leading Stocks Sagged in Late Trading After Strength in Morning. New York Slock Sates NEW TOlilC, March 4.-Tho lotio of the Rtoek market today wn.i nn Irregular ono. After tho opening, many of tho leading stocks showing small fractional declines from the (Inal of yesterday, thero was soma demand for slocks from commission houses and by sliortu anxious to cover their commitments, and the market bo cAhio stronir with Rohvt advances In many shares. Many odd lot Bales were recorded, tending to show there was some small buying by outsiders for Investment. Tho market became weak In the after noon, leading Issues being oft a good- lzed fraction from the final of yesterday, nhd In some Instances greater losses were ftltown. There was nn absence of de Wand and stocks wcro offered rather freely. Tho weakness continued until tho close, with prices at the low for tho day and around a point below the final of yesterday In many of the leaders. On tho whoio sentiment was much Im proved throughout tho Street. Tho most important thing from a stock market point of view was tho adjournment of Congress nt noon. Tho action of Congress In passing a resolution empowering tho President to take what steps ho deems advisable In preserving our neutrality while tho Europcun war Is on was favor obly commented on In various quarters of tho Street, and was, In some meas ure, used as a bull argument to advnnco prices. There was a little broadening out In trading, but business was generally con fined to tho specialties, such as Heading, Steel common and Capper. All showed advances In the early trading, but shaded off later, Maxwell Motors stocks still continued strong, and the three classes of stock each showed nn average advance of about Hfc around midday, hut declined In tho afternoon In sympathy with thn rest of the list. Selling from nbroad on tho sellers 20 lint baBls continued each dav, but transactions of this kind today were on a smaller scale. The heaviest liquidation was In Central Pacific first -Is, and the supply seemed to come from Amsterdam, Indicat ing that the selling is for Oermnti ac count. Selling of this Bort did not depress prices and what bonds wero offered found a ready market. In connection with the strength In Steel In tho early trading It was rumored that a decision In the anti-trust suit will soon be handed down and that It will not be of b. drastic nature. Before noon It was announced that tho American Steel Foundries Company had passed tho dividend on Us stock. Tho company has been paying dividends in quarterly instalments of n H of 1 per cent., or at the rato of 2 per cent, per an num. The stock didn't open until the afternoon, when It showed a decline of VA at 21 on the llrst sale, later recover ing to 25. Last close. HIsh. Low. Cloao. Kven tho big Pittsburgh j bank failure exerted only a minor In- i fluenco. There was, nevertheless, evi- t denco of prollt-tnking In Rapid Transit t around II. On tho other hand, Tnlon , Traction moved up steadily to 35, Tho fact that tho limit Is now oft the stock appeals to have encouraged the trading element to make commitments, and In the last two days more shares have changed I hands than In several weeks. In finan cial circles the opinion was expressed that tho altered transit ordinance would pass Counrlls this afternoon without n hitch, but this did not nppear to dampen i tho ardor of the bidders on the floor of the exchange. The remainder of the local list ruled firm with small gains In Philadelphia Electric, lhlgh Valley, Westmoreland Coal, l.ehlgh Valley Transit, United Ons Improvement nnd Tonopah Mining, but In none was the trading heavy. United State Steel nctod as If a nervous short In terest wan endeavoring to cover outstand ing commitments. Reports from the stool trade are on tho whole encouraging, on the avernco plants nre now operating about t'O per cent, of capacity. Tho dally nvorago pig Iron production In February was 6!i,S13 tons, compared with G1,6SD in January nnd 4S.S01 In December, thus showing a stendliy expanding tendency. In tlic nfternoon United States Steel shares reacted In sympathy with tho recession In New York. Cambria Steel 1017 scrip fell from P6& to 05, but tho 1016 scrip held steady. Keystone Tele phono lost half a point, but the general list held firm. Although the Fourth Street National Hank Is the Philadelphia correspondent of tho German National Hank of Pitts burgh, which closed Its doors this morn ing, tlie local Institution did very little business with tho failed firm, and finan cial circles here are unnffected. mM mm:imn TfffiMn1 -tBy5wx3lw 191 2W r.
