created favorable comment and was
taken to Indicate that tho present rato
of dividends would be maintained. The
net Incomo of $2,48J,578 waa equal to 9.3
per cent, earned on tho atock, compared
with 8.9 per cent earned the previous
year, nnd 8.6 per cent. In 1912. It Is said
the month of December was one of the
best In the history of the company.
Trading In bonds was qulto nctlve, es
pecially In Pennsylvania 4V4 receipts,
which sold oft to 101 on prollt taking.
TIiIh brines tho price back to within a
fraction of the figure nt which tha bonds
were sold to tho public Ilarwood Elec
tric Gs sold nt 9934 ngnlnst a last pre
vious quotation of 102.
In the afternoon trndlng became very
quiet. American Milling sold at 5i. com
pared with 4, the InBt previous sale. The
Tonopah group was Inactlvo and unre
sponsive to the reports of earnings for
tho past month. Just before tho closo
600 shares of Rapid Transit certificates
sold at 10, the recent low point. The
minimum limit has been removed on thlo
stock. Id the last fortnight nearly 15.0C0
shares have changed hands at tho limit
figure.
Tho Rapid Transit Jnnuary report
showed a substantial gain In net earn
ings and a surplus of over $12,000. Tho
last month's earnings would show up well
had been generally expected on the street
owing to tho tmununlly open winter nB
well as to tho Increased trnfTlc resulting
from the evangelistic meetings. Tho
greatly Improved economy In operation
wns also nn Important factor.
The flrst sales of Cambrlu Steel 5 per
cent, scrip, due 191", was made at 95. Tho
removal of a number of additional mini
mum limits and the reduction of others
failed to affect local prices, and, It uny
thlng, tended to creato greater confidence
In tho market's future. About the only
active Issue which seems to still require
support Is Union Traction, which today
was being offered at 36. Rapid Trnnslt was
also under prcsuro. A rise of a point
occurred In Westmoreland Coal, whoreaa
North Penn fell 234 to 90.
Despite the declaration of tho regular
dividend, Amorlcar Railways declined a
point to 85, which Is n new low level.
Little stock war offered, howover. Tho
street was Interested In tho figures given
out by the Pennsylvania Railroad con
cerning the number of Its stockholders.
Especlaly significant In view of tho talk
of foreign liquidation of American securi

number of Pennsylvania stockholders
abroad actually showed an Increase of
moro than 2 per cent since boforo the
war began.

Capitalization
Rate of income on an in
vestment depends largely on
what the capitalization is
based upon.

earnings" or "economies of
operation" are treated aa
values the rate of income will
probably be low.
