Heavy trading and u generally Improv
ing tendency marked the day's deal
ings on the Philadelphia Exchange. United
States steel led tho list In point of Votumo
of transactions as welt as of strength,
but local Interest centred around tho
Keystone Telephone group of securities.
Tho fact that announcement of tho lease
of the conduits to tho Philadelphia Elec
tric Company did not come out until after
the close of tho market yesterday nat
uratly led to tho expectation of a. further
rise In these shares today. After an
Initial bulge In both common and pre
ferred, however, profit taking nppearod
and most of the earlier ndvance was lost.
Both stocks made new tops this morning.
The S per cent. bondB moved up a point
to 91. It Is figured that tho now arrange
ment wilt be north about 4 per cent. 011
tha preferred stock, ao that the dividend
on that Issue seems assured with good
prospects ot paying off the accumulated
back dividends
Philadelphia Electric shares were not so
vitally affected, but demand waa evi
dent up to 24. Investment buying of Elec
tric Storage Battery lifted that stock 11
full point, and Philadelphia Traction also
advanced as did Rapid Transit. The street
belleea that efforts to rush the subway
plan will fall and that It will probably be
postponed for some time. This and tho ex
pectation of a very favorable January re
port were the stimulating factors. All ths
arbitrage group showed strength during
tho greater part of tho session. Penusjl
vanla was Inactive and wbb unaffected by
the news that the directors had requested
tho stockholders for authority to Increase
the Indebtedness of the company at the
next annual meeting to tho extent ot
10.0CO,000. Authority already oxlsts to In
crease the Indebtedness ?S0,0Ci0.0CO, so that
the total authorization, Including the (40,
000,000, will then be IIM.OOO.OOO. The JI9,
000.000 of consolidated mortgage bonds sold
are a part of this authorization.
