Many of the leading houses on the Street Insist that It Is Imperative for the protection of tho market to remove all minimum price restrictions from United States Steel, common. They take tho ground that each reduction of tho mtnl mum.prtce Axes what Is assumed by hold ers of the stock to, be a standard of value, and they hasten to realize on tholr hold ings at once, fearing continued lowering of the minimum day by day. It was Insisted In many parts of the Street that a large part of the supply of Steel came from Interests already exten sively committed to the short side. Thero was trading In the stock nt 33& on the New street curb. The cotton imr fcet opened steady, 3 to 7 points net high er. In response to a better Liverpool mar ket, which, In turn, was duo to a good pot demand with little selling pressure. Fluctuations In tho early trading were unimportant. The undertone continued Vunsettled In the afternoon and renewed Wall street liquidation caused fresh weakness. Southern spot markets made a favorable showing, ruling steady with Augusta ic. higher. New Orlean houses appear to bo selling in the local market, but this was believed to be of a speculative charac ter and no hedges against actual. Rules at the close were 3 to 10 points lower. S. STEEL IN PHILADELPHIA Pennsylvania Railroad Re ported to Be Buying Its 1915 Convertible Bonds in the Open Market. Heavy trading In United States Steel was the outstanding feature of tho local market this morning. During tho Mr.it hour alone approximately EG00 shares changed hands, the quotation opening at 40, the new minimum, and then advanc ing slightly. The buying orders wcro said to bo coming In some incisure from Pitts burgh. As tho day advanced the volume of business quieted down nnd tho gcncrnl tono bet-amo weaker, in sympathy with tho decline In Wall street, but purely local issues held relatively well. I'cmmyl vnnla was being picked up by Investors. International Smokeless Powder sold at 29 and one sharo of Lehigh Navigation sold exdlvldetid nt 74W, which Is tho samo price as It vim quoted yesterday with the dividend on. After nd-nnclng from 18 to 45, Klcctrlo Storage sold off to 47'.4 nt the close. On tho other hand, United Gas moved up nnd so did Lehigh Navigation certlflcuR'S. Heading shares followed the general declining tendoncy of Btocks dealt In on tho New York Exchange. In the com pany's December and half yearly report It Is Interesting to note that the final surplus for the first six months of this fiscal year was within 121,000 of that for the half year ended December 31st, 1913. Tho Coal Company gained whereas the railway fell off about one million. In De cember tho amount of anthracite hauled by tho railway was 9.7 per cent, less than tho year previous, while tho December decllno In gross was at tho rato of 13.5 per cent. Tho tonnage for six mont'ns fell oft 1.4 per cent, and gross decreased 0.2 per cent., illustrating how tho road's business In other than anthracite carry ing has declined. The bond market was fairly active, with good demand for Bethlehem Steel 1st 5s on change and Pennsylvania Convertible 3!i of 131E over the counter. The Street was Interested In the buying of these bonds at par by a house which usually acts for the railroad company Itself. Tho fact that any one Is willing at this time to buy a bond yielding only 3! per cent, and maturing In October would appear to be indicative of a largo supply of sur plus funds. The Inference Is that tho company finds It convenient to retlro theso bonds through open-market purchases now, whereas later on It may have other uses for Its money. Intrinsic Value The difference between in trinsic value and "market price" represents, as a rule, an artificial condition there has been inflation or depression. Intrinsic value varies only as actual development pro gresses. It does not fluctuate. It is NOT speculative. An investment represent ing intrinsic value only, free from manipulation, yielding a liberal return and for, which there is always a ready market based on in trinsic value, is what we offer. May ve send you our booklet? It demonstrates the im portance of intrinsic value.
