BUSINESS QUIET ,
IN PHILADELPHIA;
STOCKS DEPRESSED
Local Brokers Complain of
Difficulty in Trading.
Traction Shares Still
Heavy.
Strictly local business on tlio Philadel
phia Stodk Exchange today was over
Mmiloued by Ilia activity In Wall street,
s. Hint, aside from a moderate amount
of arbttroiro transactions, there was lit
tlo to report. Investors were plcklnff up
Klectrlc StornRe Battery, which advanced
cnr-IIy. On Hie other hand, brokers com
plalnnl Hint It was difficult to deal In
such Issues as I). 8. Steel and Heading,
which persisted In selling out of line with
their N'ow York quotations. At times In
Steel there wns as much as difference
In price, and when LchlRh Valloy was
selling at 63 In odd lots here It was abovo
13S per cent. In New York, or equnl to 69.
Tho tractions and Philadelphia Klec
trlc continued depressed ami sentiment
hero was discouraged. The Hapld Trnu
sit surplus for tho first half of the fiscal
year was only equal to 0.66 per cent
earned on tho tock, against 1.02 per
cent, earned In the first half of the pre
vious fiscal period. If the Union Trac
tion stockholders consent to pay up the
full remaining capitalization In connec
tion with the new transit plans It Is
difficult to seo just what guarantee they
can obtain for the 6 per cent. fllvlTlrwIn.
Tho heaviness of Philadelphia Klectrlc
was attributed, of course, to the protest
mado by Dlroctor Cooke to the Tubllc
Service Commission against approval of
tho now city lighting contract. The
hearing Is to be held Wednesday. A num
ber of underlying secuillles changed
hands, Including Mlnehll! nnd Schuylkill
Haven at 65 and 66i, up si, nnd Little
Schuylkill nt 63, down IH. Northern Cen
tral was also off slightly. Jersoy Trac

CinCAQO, Jan. 19.-Prch Betlltitr of
wheat sent tho market down ngnln at
tho opening todny. Holders of long
wheat wore nervou.i and sentiment was
Influenced by fonts of governmental ,n
terlerence, hirjrer receipts than had been
expected In tho Northwest and good
snows over the winter wheat belt. There
was a fairly good demand on the de
cline. Tim Mtigllsh market showed a
tendency to go lower because of freer
Plate offers at a decline of 3d and a
falling off In the demand. It Is be
lieved Hint English millers are well
stocked. Prospective arrivals In Great
Urltnlti are liberal. Plate and Indian
offers are freer. There have been good
rains In India. Wheat In the United
Kingdom Is suffering from wet weather
and prospects arc not favorable. Com
plaints are being received from Krniico
because of excessive lain.
In Germany there Is a lack of snow
covering nnd millers are buying direct
from glowers. The weather and ciop
news from Itussla Is not good, nnd llttlo
