AN engagement of Interest to this city and
jfj, Washington announced today by Mrs. John
B. Iloyburo, of Washington, Is that of her
daughter, Miss Eleanor Crosier neybuni, and
Lieutenant Francis Clark Harrington, V. B. A.
Miss neyburn, who la the only daughter of the
Jate John E. Rcyburn, ono-tlrae Mayor of this
city, and n niece bf Brigadier General William
Crazier, has lived much of her Ufa In Washing
ton, where she made, her debut three years ago.
Lieutenant Harrington Is n Virginian by birth,
and graduated from West Point In 1809. He Is
now Instructor In mathematics at the Military
Academy. The wedding will talte place in June,
at the summer home of Mrs. Heyburn In New
London, Corin.

Handsome Suits Are Worn by Women of Fash

With the season at Its gayest and the shops
presenting "a brilliant aspect, with more and
more bewitching displays of Christmas offer
ings, milady, flitting here and there in a per
fect frenzy of llth-hour unpreparedness, finds
many pretty trllles hitherto unexplolted to nil
her wants. It Is only when lights begin to
glimmer In the dusk and the fascinating shop
windows have their curtains drawn that she
pauses long enough for her cup of tea, and be
takes herself to the nearest hotel or tearoom
for a cozy chat with fellow-shoppers. The
charity bazaars, which have been held during
the last month, have offered many attractive
articles, and many people have gone in for
really serious Christmas shopping at the booths,
for thoqe'ln charge of these undertakings have
come to realize that It is only by marking prices
at regular market values that they can attract
many purchasers.
' Suits and gowns of sand color, which became
an Instant success upon their appearance, are
being worn by many smart matrons, and they
prove a delightful variation from the navy blue
which has become almost a uniform for count
less persons. One of the younger matrons,
Mrs. John R. Fell, was noticed recently In one
such trotteur. It was made on rather plain
lines with a short full skirt and trimmed with
kolinsky fur. Mrs. Fell's hat was of chamois
color, small and close fitting Mrs. Paul
Denckla Mills Is wearing a good-looking two
piece suit of covert cloth. The skirt is quite
plain, nnd the coat Is made on boyish lines
and slightly cutaway. With it Mrs. Mills wears
a wlde-brlmmed hat of soft brown felt flaring
sharply at the left aide.
A smart gown of biscuit-colored cloth Is
worn. by Mrs, John W. Converse. The skirt Is
three tiered and trimmed with beaver, and the
coat, which has a collar of. beaver, Is cut on
military lines and has a , row of very tiny
gold buttons down the back. The matron's
hat Is of. black, trimmed with two upstanding
feather fancies In front
Mrs. Herbert Tliden was noticed weartnc an
extremely good-looking costume for the oold
weather. Her loose sealskin coat reaching be
low the knees, had a collar of raccoon fur which
was buttoned closoly around her neck. Her
skirt was black, having a plaited oversklrt
reaching nearly to the ankles, Mrs. Tliden's
hat was a small black velvet turban, edged
around the crown with bright blue feathers, and
a small bunch of French flowers nestled on
the side. She wore gray spats and carried a
sealskin muff.
