OUTS DIVIDEND Parent Company's Shares Dropped a Point on the v Local Exchange and Whole List Turned Weak T, Up to tho time tho news reached tho financial district that the Pennsylvania Compnuy'tt usual December dividend had been reduced from 4 per cent, to 1 per cent, the local market merely marked tlmo todoy. But when the Pennsylvania Railroad's chief subsidiary gave out thh action on tne tho part of the board, prices began to recede, all around. Not only was Pennsylvania Itself affected, but the general list on well declined. Includ ing Itapld Transit, Cambria Steel, Lehigh Valley, Heading, United Gas Improve ment, Union Traction and Electric and People's Is. Although the Pennsylvania Company's dividend has boen at the rate of 7 per cent, per annum the payments have been mado 4 per cent. In December and 3 per cent. In June. Just what the annual rate will bo henceforth Is, of course, not cer tain, and depends upon futuro business conditions. All of tho stock la owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which Is, therefore, directly nffected by tho loss of dividends. This, naturally, caused the street uneasiness ns to what action the parent company would tako regarding Its present fi per cent, distribution. A week from today tho directors of the "Pan Handle," another Important subsidiary, meet to act on that dividend. Tho next Pennsylvania disbursement Is due In February. Tho Pennsylvania Company will havo paid this year, including tho present dis tribution, only 1 ptr cent. Into tho 1 all road's treasury. This means a loss of $2,400,000, or about 4 of 1 per cent, on tho railroad's stock. The street had looked for a reduction, but not moro than 2 per cent., so that the announcement caused something of n chill In financial circles. Pennsylvania fell from 03 9-16 to 31s in this market. Tho minimum on tho stock is o"i. Up to 1 o'clock It was a typical holiday session today. Stcfcks scarcely fluctuated chungo today. Stocks scarcely fluctuated at all throughout the morning, except for tho offering down of 100 shares of Lehigh Valley Transit preferred from 28 to 271i bfore a nale could be effected. Aa the day advanced the tono became heavier, reflect ing the depressed condition of tho New York list. United States Steel cased off and the other so-called arbitrage Issues wero also Inclined to sag. In tho bond list similar dullness prevailed. Electric and People's 4s declined nearly a point Disappointment Was expressed over tho market's failuro to respond to the an nouncement made by tho United States Steel Corporation concerning wages. This action on tho part of the big Industrial company was regarded as an Indication ot a hopeful attitude towards future business conditions. HHab WHEAT MARKET, ALTHOUGH ACTIVE, IS NERYOUS TODAY Opens Lbwcr, Rallies, But Breaks Again and Fin ishes Below Yesterday's Closing Prices. CHICAGO, Deo. 23. Trade in wheat was nctlvo again today, but the market was nervous. It 'opened lower, rallied, but broke again and finished below yester day's last prices. Thero was considerable holiday profit-. taking and sellers were influenced by an unconfirmed report that the Dardanelles had been forced by the allied fleet. Spec ulators assumed this would rclenso a great deal of wheat. Ignoring th fact that tho ports of southern Itussla are closed becauso of Ice, and contain In the aggregate less than 0,000,000 bushels ot wheat. The train service, moreover, Is' occupied to capacity for troops and sup plies. There was more heavy export bus iness, today's sales bolng estimated at 8,000,000 bushels In all positions. Pur .. chases made by representatives of tho Italian Government amounted to 1,125,000 bushels. Futures closed U to ic lower The corn market kept within a narrow range, but displayed a strong" undertone, desplto holiday proflt-taklnr by a large number of longs. The dips in wheat also led to a great deal of selling. Full winter feeding prevails oyer tho cntlro corn belt. There was, as yesterday. Important buv- Ing of corn by large local cash Interests. A fairly good domestlo and export busi ness was done. Futures closed to Vic. higher. Oats showed material strength, although there lias been a great deal of profit-taking by longo. A sale of 1,000,000 bushels was made hero today to the Italian Government. The British Government bought 1,000,000 bushels at Winnipeg. Futures closed VI to V4c. higher. Provisions held very nearly even most of the day, although qulto a business was done. New Investors bought pork and ribs and packers bought lard, while longs took profits. LONDON, Dec. 23, It was taken for granted today that the Stock Exchange will be reopened for business on January 4. It is probable that official announce ment of the resumption of business will be made through the Treasury. It Is expected that minimum prices for se curities will be extended and that only cash transactions will be permitted but jobbers will probably be allowed certain discretion In making quotations. There was a large attendance ot brokers In the street today, but dealings In securities were not large, being of a holiday character. There waa a rally In Russians cn better news as to the prog ress of the Czar's troops In Poland. Bra zilian Issues had a good tone. Tin shares wera harder. In sympathy with the metaJ, The American group was Idle. Rates for loans and discounts were weak. The Bank of England was a light discounter of pre-morotorium bills.
