AUSTRIAN SOLDIERS START OFF GAILY FOR FRONT
A troop train bearing men from the second line is shown just
before It moves off toward the Russian frontier. The cars are
covered with ribald inscriptions directed at the Russian army.
BUT THIS IS WHERE THE PATHS OF GLORY LEAD
Snow now sifta down upon the rows of silent graves containing all that is left of the youths
who a few weeks ago started for the battle line so light-heartedly, or .they He wqunded and
abandoned in deserted towns. Their burial places are unnamed and the only Information that
goes back to those at home is the blunt announcement: "Your son has fallen."
NO LONGER INTERESTED IN GLORY
A British soldier, wounded, sinks down at a comer in a street
in a deserted French town through which his regiment retreated.
Sickness and weariness is evident in every wrinkle in his clothes.
