"COUNTESS OF TUBS"
Amateur Performance at DcUevue-Slratford
Lait Night Great Success.
Quito the most frlrly-glrly performance ot the
yoar and altogether charming M tha "Count
ess of Tubs," the amateur musical comedy pre
sented last night In the ballroom of tho Belle-vue-Stratford
for charity. And although the
Inclement woather undoubtedly kept a number
of persons at home, tha boxes and lower floor
wore comfortably filled with an audience which
was most appreciative of tho efforts of tho en
tertainers. Much credit Is duo to Charles Leon
Downing, who was responsible for the produc
tion and staging of tho entire affair, for the
two acts were given with a smoothness and
finish which was truly quite admirable.
The plot dealt with tho adventures In the great
world of a former blanchlsseuso de fin and her
family, the title role being taken by Miss Ed
wlna Malposs.
Thomas Cnthcart as Karl Van Damm and
later as negro waiter received much npplauso,
as also did Alexander Balfour with his song,
"It's, Too High." In tho flrst act a dance by
Miss Frances McCann, Miss Ireno Thomas and
Henry Nlbhtlngalc, as messenger boys, created
much amusement.
Miss Malpass, with a chorus composed of chil
dren from the Northern Home for Friendless
Children (for which the benefit was given), re
ceived round after round of applause.
The second act opened with a cabaret scene.
In which the fox trot and the lulu fado were
danced.
Miss Mario Starr, a debutante of the season,
was simply delightful In a solo dance, and flut
tered about the stage with wonderful grace.
Her costume was most unique, representing a
fuohsla, The bodice of the gown was of deep
'purple velvet, with points of the velvet extend
ing down onto the skirt, which was of pale pink
taffeta with many small ruffles like the petals
of a flower.
MIsb Helen Sanders, with Norrla E. Hender
son. .Jr., as a dancing partner,, appeared In a
delightful duo dance, tho Pavlowa guvotte. Mlas
Sanders' costume was ot the picturesque period
of 1612. Miss Miriam 'Blsler also .interpreted
several dances. Moat unusual was the chorus
of the sons, "The Things We Eat At Nght,"
presenting animated lobster salads, chickens,
champagne bottles, Ice cream cones, bouillon
cups and other delicious but Indigestible edibles.
"Les Blenalmes du Regiment" brought down
the house. In this chorus the girls were garbed
In costumes similar to those worn In one of the
choruses of a musical revue recently playing In
this city, consisting ot a combination of pale
pink and blue satin, with bloomers. The men
were Tommy Atkinses In brilliant scarlet uni
forms. ,
The dance of artists and models was also
cloyerly conceived. The girls were most at
tractive In black satin costumes, with knte
breeches and three-cornered hats of black satin.
The men were clad In artist's btouse and cap.
Altogether, the evening was a great success,
for after the lowering of the, curtain and the
distribution of countless bouquets to the fair
worker for charity the ballroom was cleared
and a dance given. Dr. and Mrs. Qeorgo W,
Urquhart, the latter of whore Is president of
the board of managers of the home and has
striven hard for th success of the undertaking,
entertained Mr. and Mrs. James A. QIase, Mr.
and Mrs. Frederick Qelger, Mr. and Mrs, Wil
liam Sautter. Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Sickles,
Mr. and Mrs. David Jester. Mr. and Mrs. John

TIIE11E Is probably ilo city In the world
so well provided with social clubs as Phila
delphia. Especially Is this true of the quantity
and quality of the smaller organizations scat
tered thickly about the suburbs I do not refer
to the regular country clubs, such as Man
helm, Merlon, the Philadelphia Country, the
Philadelphia Cricket, Delaware Itlver, White
marsh, Huntingdon Valley, and others, but to
the tiny associations, some of them affiliated
with larger organization, such as the Lilacs,
the Button and the Anchorage situated on the
Schuylkill, all ot which are supposed to be con
nected with rowing, but are really used more
for the purpose of giving dinners and dances.
Then there are others which are frankly eating
clubs. The famous old State In Schuylkill,
the patriarch of them all and better known as
the "Fish House," Is one of these. It has the
longest consecutive history ot any club In the
world, It charter dating, If I recollect correctly,
from 1T35, The Rabbit la another club devoted
to the gentle art of cooking, Its members, like
those of the Fish House, being practically all
eligible for Brillat Bavarin'a Cordon Bleu.
There aro still other cozy little, organizations
tucked In out-of-the-way places near the city,
which make a specialty of some sport. The
Radnor and Pickering Hunts are of these.
Another Is the Philadelphia Gun Club, and a
fourth the Corinthian Yacht Club,
Tha usual manner In which these email clubs
are handled Is by Installing a steward and his
wife, tho latter doing the cooking and the
former being a sort of general factotum, tend
ing bar, serving dinner, running the vegetable
garden and handling the live stock,
Trier Is an amusing story" told of the break
ing in of a new steward at one of these clubs.
He was unfamiliar with the etiquette ot the
