ROCK ISLAND BONDS
STRONG IN TRADING
ON N. Y. EXCHANGE
Talk of Opposition to Wal
lace Committee Thought
to Be Responsible for Ad
vance.
NEW YORK, Dee. 4.-Further evidence
Of the expansion of Investment demand
And of Increasing confidence was fur
t nlshed In tlio bond trading on the floor
of the exchango today. Transactions dur
ing the morning were the largest of any
simitar period slifco the exchange re
opened on last Saturday.
features of the trading were Rock
Island Issues, which were strong. The
refunding 43, after opening tit 66, ad
vanced to SS. The Ss. which opened at
Si, U above last night's closing, went
to KM during the morning, reacting to
8; Just before noon.
The advance In the Issues was thought
to bo caused by buying of Interests which
are opposed to the Wallace Committee,
which Is calling for deposits of the re
funding is for a reorganisation of the
road. Although the Wallace Commtttco
now has a majority of the outstanding
bonds on deposit with It, it was pointed
out that any one securing a small min
ority could hold up the plans of the
Wallace Committee and possibly organize
a minority committee with the purpo3o
of buying the road when It Is auctioned
off this month.
It was pointed out today that control
of tho Chicago, noble Island nnd Tactile
could be obtained at a relatively low price
through the purchase of the collateral 4s,
which are selling around 22.
Southern Pacific convertible Ss rose from
91 tC 01' J, and Bethlehem Steel 5s rose
from 83T4 to SOttrr- New York Railways 4s
made a gain of ?! to Tl and the Ss sold
at SliJ. Northwest Pacific 4s gained a
pdlnt frcm the. opening price of iSi.
No evidence can be obtained of any
largo foreign selling, although rumors
have been current that Germany Is plac
ing largo amounts of bonds In this market
and tho upturn in rclchsmarlcs Is taken
as confirmation of these reports. ' Spoyer
& Co. state that they do not think for
eign selling has had as much to do with
the strength In rclchmarks na the cov
ering 61 shorts. Exchange on Berlin has
been sold freely for some weeks at de
clines starting from 93, and Gorman
bankers Insist that a large part of this
selling was not for short account.
Trading in stocks through the Clearing
House Committee continues to increase
and now has assumed such proportions
that tho exchango authorities cannot
spare the services of the clerks who were
assigned to tho work of preparing the
afternoon and closing sheets giving the
quotations and sales. This method of re
porting after two days of service has
now been abandoned, and the quotations
nnd sales will be printed on the ticker
after 3 p. m. The sales given are of 100
share lots only, no report being made
of transactions In fractional lots.
All developments aro still of a favor
able character. Copper metal today is
selling at 13 cents, and that price may
now be taken as the fixed business rate.
Money is In such supply ns to be an
actual glut In the market, lenders being
found everywhere, even amonii Stock Ex
change houses, while borrowers are few.
This has forced many of tlioso with un
used funds to appear on tho Stock Ex
change as borrowers of stocks, and the
borrowing demand has facilitated the
liquidation of many loans. The general
list lends at-3& to 4 per cent., with United
States Steel common at 4', per cent, aifd
Southern Hallway at S per cent.
Tomorrow's bank statement will give
the condition of each Individual. The de
layed statement will be complicated, as
It will Include seven new items, but this,
of course, will have no bearing on the
general showing. ,
Tho New York banks lost heavily
through Subtreasury operations this week.
They received from the Interior $12.1)7,000,
according to the known movements of
money, and shipped $7,231,000, Including
$130,000, to New Orleans, J1.00O.O00 to San
Francisco and 5 1,423,000 national bank
notes sent to Washington for redemption.
Ordinary disbursements to the Subtreas
ury totaled 13,500.(00, wlille payments for
customs. Internal revenue and note re
demption amounted to $11,280,000, showing
a loss on Subtreasury operations of $32,
779,000 and a net loss of $27.SS3,OC0. These
figures would appear to Indicate a rather
poor weekly bank statement tomorrow.
The Canadian Pacific offering of $12,
00,000 equipment notes has been, oversub
scribed. This reflects the enormous In
vestment demand now in the market, and
foreshadows early efforts at Important
now financing by some of the leading rail
ways. It Is understood that steps in this
direction arc now only held back because
of a desire to wait for the Interstate Com
merce decision on freight rates.

INVESTMENT BUYING
STEADILY INCREASING
Storage Buttery nnd United Gas in
Demand Pennsylvania Erratic.
Business on the Philadelphia Stock 13x-
chnng-o ns9umed fairly largo proportions
at times today and there was evidence
of Increasing Interest In the better class
of securities. This was particularly true
of the buying In United Gas Improvement,
w Men was persistent around 81, and Union
Traction, Pennsylvania pursued an erratic
course, selling In some quantity at o2J
and then casing off to 52 6-16 only to re
cover later above yesterday's close to 524.
Reading ruled strong and there was a
distinct demand for the Tonopah group.
Electric Storage Battery continued on
the upward swing which set In earlier In
the week and by midday had established
a 1 point ntlvnnce over last night's final
figures. On the oilier hand, Lehigh Navi
gation, Cambria Steel and Baldwin Loco
motive wcro Inclined to hang back, but In
tho afternoon the whole tone became
firmer. Northern Central roso to 82.
Philadelphia Electric was In light supply
and reacted n small fraction. The
bond list on Change was less active than
on Thursday, but business was brisk over-the-counter.
Encouragement was derived
from the purchase of the Canadian Paci
fic 4'i equipment trust certificates by a
syndicate pa illy made up of Philadelphia
bankers. E. Lowber Stokes and Brown
Bros. & Co. aro totake care ot the plac
ing of the bonds In this State.
Lehigh Valley Transit shares remained
Inert despite n very favprable report of
earnings for October. The gross showed
a gain of (19,011, or more than 13 per
cent., while tho net Increase was 115,732, or
over 23 per cent. Balnnce after Interest
charges was J17,E98, a decrease of JG43S.
For the 12 months the gross gain wan
(123,642 and the net Increase 195,060 leaving
a balance, after Interest charges, of
265,220.
COMMODITY PRICES LOWER
December 1 Figures Were 01124,183,
Compared With $125,734 Last Year.
That the general trend of commodity
prices was downward last month Is lndl
ratcd by Dun's Index Xumbcr, which was
(124,183 on December 1, as against (124,310
on November 1 and (123,i34 on December 1
a year ago, when a moderate advanco
was recorded. On the corresponding date
of 1912 the total was comparatively low
at (122.034, owing principally to the rela
tive cheapness of breadstuff's and pro
Visions at that time.
Tho small decline which occurred last
month further reflects the gradual res
toration of more normal conditions, quo
tations having receded about 2.2 per cent,
from the Inflated position attained Im
mediately after the outbreak of the dis
astrous war In Europe. '

IRON AND STEEL MARKET
IMPROVED DURING WEEK
More New Orders In Some Lines; Lit
tle Change in Other Business.
Tho Iroit nnd steel and pig- Iron mar
kets are the only lines of local business
In which any Improvement occurred dur
ing the last week. Marked Improvement
In new orders was shown tn some lines
of the Iron and steel trade, while ac
tivity nnd buying of pig Irori Is reported
to be materially Improved. Other lines
show little change from the previous
cek.
tn their weekly review of business con
ditions In Philadelphia, It. 0. Dun & Co.
say:
"The general situation In the Iron and
steel market is regarded by trado con
sulted to be steadily but slowly Improv
ing and In some lines there Is reported
a marked Improvement In new orders,
nallroads, however, aro still buying but
little and targe orders from this direc
tion have not appeared. Fig iron shows
Bomo Increased activity and buying Is
reported materially Improved. Finished
material Is somewhat Irregular and
prices reflect the uncertainty of the mar
ket, Structural work Is quiet, but a
somewhat larger tonnage Is reported
from ship and locomotive builders.
"Inquiry In local trade circles at this
lime does not reveal any change of note
In the hardware line. Some houses con
sulted report a good business as com.
pared with last year, while others claim
It Is only fair, Tho general consensus
of opinion Is, however, that existing con
ditions at this time are materially af
fecting business. In some quarters those
consulted prophesy a resumption of good
business In tho near future, while others
do not hold this opinion.
"Dealers In electrical goods note a
satisfactory volumo of business for the
month Just closed, with conditions about
as favorablo as for tho preceding month.
The stove trade Is well occupied, with
demand for supplementary heating ap
paratus, but tho continued rather mild
weather has somewhat checked dealings
In heavier articles. Lumber dealers at
this time stato that tho volume of busi
ness continues to bo closely restricted
and that prices are low and fluctuating.
