Once each year the people of Amer
ica turn to Almighty God and offer
thanks for His goodness. It Is a mag
nlflcent observance. There Is none
more beautiful anywheje In the world.
No man possesses anything besides
what he has received from God. No
person onn retain anything unless It be
God's will that ho shall. To God the
world Is Indebted for the comforts ot
home, the food It cats nnd the very
air It breathes. Without Clod there
could be no happiness, there could tie
no life, there could be no America,
there could be no world. Surely the
Unseen King deserves nil tho thanks
tho people of our country can give
Him. Ho deserves far more than He
has over received, far more than over
will be given to Him.
President Wilson, In n. beautiful proc
lamation, hns named next Thursday as
the annual day for Thanksgiving for
19U. In his message the President
mentions the thanks that should be
olterod by Americans for tho poaco
that Is oxlstlng between the!.' country
and other nations, at this time when
almost the wholo of Europe Is engaged
In war. Further ho says;
"Our peoplo havo looked Upon their
own llfo ns n nation with deep com
prehension, a deeper realization of
their responsibilities as Well ns their
blessing, nnd n keener Benso of the
moral nnd practical significance of
what their part among the nations of
tho world mny coma to."
Phlladclphlana can express their
thonks In no more practical way than
by helping to send tho Thanksgiving
ship to tho cold and starving women
and children In wnr-torn Ilelglum.
"Ilo yo therefore merciful, as your
.Father also la merciful."
I3ut let us not show our thanks only
on this one day or only during this
Thanksgiving season. God will place
more folth In tho sincerity of our
prayers and prolse If wo prove our ap
preciation by scattering sunshine
about us every day through Uvea of
practical service. . PHILLIPS.

Breakfast Association.
In tho gray and misty dawn of any
Sunday morning or late on any Sunday
afternoon there may be seen on North
12th street, near Vine, ono of the saddest
scenes that can bo found In this great
city. At these times hundreds ot home
less, hungry men, and sometimes n few
women, assemble In line outsldo the Sun
day Breakfast Association headquarters,
and there watt, with hanging heads, until
tho doors of tho retreat are oponed. Then
they file Inside, whero the odor of boiling
coffee meets them and their red and un

tbey see stacks of rolls and sandwiches
waiting to glvo thtm a little strength.
For moro than SQ years this Institution
has been n haven for the unfortunates,
who, through drink or wild lives, have
lost their manhood and womanhood, their
money and, In many cases, their self
respect and friends. After they aro In

the place of worship of the Eleventh Bap

It dopends entirely on private contribu

time It has always had sufficient funds
for Its work. Tho most prominent men In

PLANS TO LESSEN

Doctor Fulton Sends Out
Suggestions It Is Hoped
May Reduce Number
of 50,000 Four-fifths.
Tho Presbyterian Church officials In this
city and throughout tho country are
uniting In a campaign to have suspended
members of the church reunite with
churches of their denomination, and have
begun a big campaign to prevent the
lapsing of memberships In tho future. It
Is tho hope that, the number of persona
suspended each year may be reduced
from more than 0,000 to about one-tenth
that number.
The Rev. Dr. William P. Fulton, one of
the members of tho General Assembly's
Permanent Committee on Evangelism,
which. With tho Special Committee on
Christian Life and Worn, is In charge of
tho campaign, says that he believes the
number suspended each year may bo cut
down to between 10,000 and 15,000 If the
proper methods arc applied and Just ef
