BANK CLEARINGS IMPROVE
Gain Indicates More Favorable Busi

Itather more favorable business con

this Is most apparent nt New York city,
whero thero nppenrs a decline of 32.2

Amazing Article About the War
in Sunday's Public Ledger
"No unofficial Englishman worth his salt
wanted to snivel hypocritically about our love
of peace and our respect for treaties and our
solemn acceptance of a painful duty, and all
the rest of the nauseous mixture of schoolmas
ter's twaddle, parish magazine cant and cine
matograph melodrama with which we were
deluged. We were perfectly ready to knock
the Kaiser s head off just to teach him that if
he thought he was going to ride roughshod
over Europe, including our nev friends, the
French, and the plucky little Belgians, he was
reckoning without old England."
Shaw's story of the making of the war is in part a startling
excoriation of England's diplomatic hypocrisy and of Sir
Edward Grey, the "amiable and popular but confused
instrument of England's Foreign Office."
ArxtlA
Read what Shaw says about this in his
passed' between Sir Edward Grey and Sazanoff,. Russia's
Secretary of Foreign Affairs the one man "who keeps his
head,"
