From. Berwick, Pa., caine a letter
written by George Van Scoty, 8 years
old, who enclosed JO cents. The letter
Had as follows:
"I arrt sending SO cents and would like
tn'DUy fodr meals for four little Bel
pan boys. This is merely two wccka or
Jn)' allowance and It was money I was
fiaVlntf for Christmas."
Mrs. B. M. Thaw, an elderly woman
fortnight a beautiful lace handkerchief to
the Relief Bureau. The handkerchief
8s presented to her by General A. T. A.
TorbeM. of Delaware, many years aso,
while ho wu the American Consul Oen
ral In Paris during the administration
of resident Grant. The aged woman
requested that the handkerchief be
placed In the store of John Wanamaker
ant', be sold to the person offering the
highest sum,' and the proceeds turned
6vei to the committee.
Through an error It was stated yes
terday In the list of contributors that
C and M. two youngsters who had
written a poem, had contributed 25 cents.
They contributed $2.
The cargo of relief ship No. 2, which
hns not yet been chartered, will be In
the nature of a Thanksgiving gift, al
though the plans are to have her go out
Just as soon after the Thelma as there
will bo contributions enough to fill her
holds.
Three million Belglums are starving.
Just twice as many people an tho city of
Philadelphia boasts. One meal to each
and every one of them Is not going to
keep the wolf from tho door.
PLIGHT OP THE REFUGEES.
One ship, no matter how well provi
sioned she may be. Is not going to feed
a nation. The end of the war Is not even
In sight. Little Belgium Is still the blood
iest battleground. And Holland, a coun
try which has all that It can do to look
ftcr Its own Inhabitants, Is being crowd
ed to Its very borders with the panic
stricken refugees.
Philadelphia Is realizing this. The cam
paign, which It was thought would bo bu
a transitory four-day affair, promises to
become one of an ontlre winter's dura
tion. Following Is a list of contributions re
ceived at tho relief headquarters today:

Large palms "shade" the orchestra,
which can bo heard though not seen.
The dancing floor was Inviting. From
the first MaxUe until early In the morn
