WHAT MILADY WEARS
Feminine Inconsistencies are Many in Fashion's
Domain
During these delightful mid-autumn days,
which are a curious mixture of warm, almost
summery breezes, and tho brisker winds which
herald tho approach of oold weather, one ob
serves strange contrasts In tho mode of dressing
of different Individuals Tripping down Chest
nut street comeB a well-known young woman,
clnd In a thin silk frock, with light pumps
topped by filmy hose. Sho greets nn acquaint
ance who Is forestalling winter by wearing a
suit of broadcloth edged with fur, and heavy
galtered boots. Truly tho Inconsistencies of
feminine fashions are many. The hotels nnd
theatres are beginning to enter to their mld
scason crowds, for, although many persons have
not opened their town houses as yet, they are
stationed In the near-by suburbs, nnd In these
dnys of Innumerable motors It Is a small matter
to run in from tho country once, or even twice,
i each day.
In tho matter of street suits, dark blue, that
ovor-servlceable shade, continues to hold Its
own, nnd, In fact, thltv year, with Its military
tendencies, will probably bring the shade more
than ever Into vogue. Speaking ot tho military
style, Mrs A. J. Drexel Blddlo and her debu
tante daughter were seen on tho street severat
days ago both clad In dark blue. Mrs. Blddlo'n
suit was trimmed with braid of n dull brick-red,
tho braid running up over the shoulder in
cpaulctto effect. The coat woh made with a
plaited peplum, and this note was also carried
out In tho skirt, which was quite short and had
a knee-length platted ocrsklrt Mrs. BIddle's
hat was of black velvet, set Jauntily a little to
tho side. Mrs. Edward T. Stotcsbury Is also
appearing in a most becoming calling costume
of dark blue broadcloth, with which bIio wears
a muff nnd stole of Russian sable. Mrs. Victor
Mather's vivid coloring la well set oft by a
trottour of navy blue, the capo of which is lined
with white satin. With this costume Mrs.
Mather wears a large flat sailor hat of blue and
white taffeta.
A smart and extremely becoming fall costume
was worn tho other day by Miss Margaret
Dunlap while taking tea In the Bollcvue. The
suit was of a subdued brown velours de
laine, made on severely tailored lines, and worn
with a stole of taupe-colored fox. Miss Dunlap'o
hat was small and close fitting nnd made of
black vclvot, with a wide band of brilliant cerise
flowers forming tho brim. Miss Frances Sulli
van Is looking smart In a shopping suit of sage
green cloth. Tho short Jacket Is plain, except
for a touch of darker green embroidery on
tho back panel, and the skirt is short nnd nar
row, the necessary futness for walking being
given by a slosh In front. With this Miss Sul
livan wears a smalt velours hat of two shades
oC green, trimmed solely with an oddly shaped
ornament at one side
DEBUTANTE AFFAIRS

mass of bloom Great palms with their waving
branches and feathery cybodlum and farleyanco
ferns form a wonderful background of shaded
green for the varicolored banks of exquisite
bloom which represent the numbers upon num
oers of exquisite Mowers which have been sent
to Miss Dorr.
Great purple orchids, American Beauties,
Klllarnoy roses, combine with stevla, forget-me-nots
and those ccqulslte tiny sweetheart
roses, to say nothing of the IoIets, blush roses,
lilies of the alley and chrysanthemums.
Mlsa Dorr Is the daughter of the late Dalton
