Florence Reed Displays an Art Worthier
Than Its Arehiolc in Michael Morton's
Play, "The Yellow Ticket."
Russia Is a terrible country. Tor-r-rlble! Poor
girls have a frightful time there. They nre
sometimes compelled to commit murder. Then
they become heroines. Powerful Russians are
villains of tho deepest dye. Therefore, they
give "poor glr-r-rls" the opportunity of leaping
Into tho pages of fiction or tho acts of the
drama. Fine stuff! Sylvanus Cobb, whose
name, alas' Is forgotten, wrote thrilling tales
of pirates that never existed and Russian
despots that should have actually lived, Inas
much as they would have killed Cobb' heroes
aiid heroines. Sylvanus Cobb did a lot to
establish tho awful reputation ot Russia.
Maxim Gorky hai only added a touch to thi
picture.
But Michael Morton, In his play, "The Yellow
Ticket," produced loot night at the Garrick
Theatre, has out-Cobbed Cobb nnd out-Gor-kyed
Gorky.
Maryn Varenka, a Russian Jewess, secures
the "yellow ticket." This means that, ns a so
cial outcast, giving revenue to the Government,
Marya has the freedom of Russia. Indeed, her
privileges are much tike thrw of Doctor
Cook when he was given the freedom of New
York. While she is "free," Marya. like Doctor
Cook, Is pursued later by her "past," and is
ever 'sdeath! ever, ever recognized by tho
public nnd polloa. She can't disguise her face.
The Baron Stepan Andrey who has much to
do with the Russian police falls in love with
Marya. Why the Baron a man of exorbitant
wealth, of unlimited power should "stoop so
low" Is a matter that provokes one to question
th Baron's tajste as well as discretion and In
telligence. For tho Baron certainly could have
had his pick ot tho glorious garden of girls in
