WHATMILADY WEARS
Dnnrc Frocks and Afternoon Gowns Worn By
Women of Fashion Attract tlic Artistic Eye.
With the sudden changes from cold to heat
and back to cold again, which have been tho
order of the day In the weather these past
weeks, every style of frock may bo scon. Tho
evening gown Is, of course, much in evidence
at the many dances which arc held In tho clubs
and hotels of the suburbs, which form so im
portant a pait in the life of Philadelphia's
maid.i and matrons.
Mlsc Knthnrine A. Bowie, a debutante of this
year, wears a glrllidi gown of creamy lace, the
skirt ot which is made In a three-tier crfit.
The dainty bodice Is cut In a surpllc"e shape,
and Is Joined to the skirt by a wide girdle of
shirred satin. Another dainty white frock is
worn by Miss Pauline Dlsston. who 3 a petite
and dainty type of young girl. Tho little gown
Is of cobwebby lace, and Is trimmed here and
there with tiny bunches of rosebuds.
Another attractive evening gown Is that worn
by Mis. Gilbert Harvey. The skirt is made of
soft folds of white satin, while the bodice has
a Jacket effect and pannier of old rose cut
velvet. Soft lace Is used about the neck and
sleeves.
Mrs. Harold Roberts, of Hnvcrford, wears a
carmlngly simple and effective evening frock
at the club dances. The foundation of the
skirt is soft white satin, over which falls
three flounces of shadow lace; the top flounce
Is outlined by heading of tiny rosebuds. A
klmonii bodice of boft laco Is also trimmed
with rosebuds. A chic white straw hat, tho
crown of which Is encircled with small dark
blue velvet flowers and a large pink rose at
the side, completes the costume.
White and black-and-white costumes ar
extremely popular for the street for early fall.
Mrs. Robert Learning Montgomery has chosen
a becoming costume in white. Tho skirt Is
rather plain, and over it Is worn n cape-coat,
which falls almost to the knees in back nnd
shortens at tho front. Tho white Is relieved
by n small, close-nttlng hnt of black velvet,
with upstanding goura feathers.
Miss Hope Beale, who Is tail and statuesque,
has selected an outdoor costume which Is
charming for Its simplicity. Her frock is of
white cross-barred crepe, devoid ot trimming;
with it sho weais a small black velvet hat
with a single huge senrlot flower nt the front.
A smart gown of black chiffon taffeta has
been selected by Mrs. Mahlon Hutchinson. Tho
short Jacket is worn over a blouse of black
chlrfon, and Mis. Hutchinson's hat Is of black
velvet, Mrs. Georgo R. Yarrow appeared re
cently In a becoming gown of pale gray taffeta,
with a small black hat.
Miss Elsie Morris Brlnton wears a good-looking
blue cerge coat-suit. Tho skirt Is narrow
and has a Phort tunic. A short rounded coat,
trimmed w'th a smart black satin collar re
veres nnd cuffs stitched In a lighter shade of
blue, completes the costume. With this Mis3
Biiuton wears a large black velvet sailor-shapo
hat, with a single feather lying close to tho
brim, the onds of which cross on ono side.
Mre. William J. Clothier, who has been a
conspicuous figure every day ut the horse,
show In Bryn Mawr this week. Ims chosen an
extremely chic gown of white lace, which la
made with n gathered skirt and wldo soft
girdle. Tho hat, which seemed as if specially
chnsen for this frock, had a rather full crown
of black velvet and a wide brim of shadow
lace, which was wired and gave an upstand
ing halo effect.
Another lovely creation which was seen at
the horse show was that worn by Mrs. llobort
i Kelso Cnssatt, who returned last week from a
j summer spent In Newport. Tho frock was
I fashioned of garlands of lace, which wero out
i lined at the top with bands of French blua
, shaded ribbon. The bodice was open nt tha
neck and finished with a de Medici collar.
Mrs. Cassett's hat was large, and wna mad
of cream-colored lace, ami was trimmed with
small bunches of any (lowers.
