WHAT MILADY WEARS
Dance Frocks and" Afternoon Gowns Worn By
Women of Fashion Attract the Artistic Eye.
With the sudden chang.es from cold to heftt
and back to cold again, which have boon th
order of the day In the weather these past
weeks, every style of frock mny bo seen. Th
evening gown Is, of course, much In evldenc
nt the many dances which are held In the clubs
and hotels of tho suburbs, which form so Im
portant n part In the life of Philadelphia's
ninids nnd matrons.
Miss Katharine A. Bowie, a debutante or this
year, wears a girlish gown of creamy lace, tho
skirt of which Is made In a three-tier effect.
The dainty bodlco Is cut In a surplleb shape,
and Is Joined to the skirt by a wide girdle of
shirred satin. Another dainty white frock Is
worn by Miss Pauline Dlsston, who Is a petite
and dainty typo of young girl. The Ilttlo gown
Is of cobwebby lace, and Is trimmed here and
there with tiny bunches of rosebuds.
Another attractive evening gown Is that worn
by Mis. Gilbert Harvey. Tho skirt Is mnde of
soft folds of white satin, while the bodice hns
a Jacket effect and pannier of old rose cut
velvet. Soft lace Is used about the neck and
sleeves.
Mrs. Harold Roberts, of Havorford, wears a
carmlngly simple and effective evening frock
at the club dances. Tho foundation of tho
skirt Is Eoft white satin, over which falls
three flounces of shadow lace, the top flounco
Is outlined by heading of tiny rosebuds, A
klmona bodice of soft lace Is also trimmed
with rosebuds. A chic white straw hat, the
crown of which Is encircled with small dark
blue velvet flowers nnd a largo pink rose at
the side, completes the costume.
White and black-and-white costumes aro
extremely popular for the street for early fall.
Mrs. Robert Learning Montgomery has chosen
n becoming costume In white. The skirt Is
rather plain, and over It Is worn a cape-coat,
which falls almost to the knees In back and
shortens at tho front. The white is relieved
by a small, close-fitting hat of black velvet,
with upstanding goura feathers.
Miss Hope Beale, who Is tall and statuesque,
has selected nn outdoor costume which Is
chnrmlng for its simplicity. Her frock is of
white cross-barred crepe, devoid of trimming;
with It she wears a small black velvet hat
with a single huge srarlet flower nt the front.
A smart gown of black chiffon taffeta has
been selected by Mrs. Mahlon Hutchinson. The
short Jacket Is worn over a blouse of black
chiffon, nnd Sirs. Hutchinson's hat Is of black
velvet. Mrs. George R. Yarrow appeared re
cently In a becoming gown of pale gray taffeta,
with a small black hat.
Miss Elsie Morris Brinton wears a good-looking
blue serge coat-suit. The skirt Is narrow
and has a short tunic. A short rounded coat,
trimmed with a smart black satin collar re
veres and cuffs stitched in a lighter shade of
blue, completes the costume. With this Miss
Brinton wears a large black velvet sailor-shape
hat, with a single feather lying close to the
brim, tho ends of which cross on one side.
Mrs. William J: Clothier, who has been a
conspicuous figure every day at the horse
show In Bryn Mawr this week, has chosen an
extremely chic gown of white lace, which Is
made with a gathered skirt and wide soft
girdle. The hat, which seemed as If specially
chosen for this frock, had a rather full crown
of black velvet and a wide brim of shadow
lace, which was wired and gave an upstand
ing halo effect.
Another lovely creation which was seen at
the horse show was that worn by Mrs. Robert
Kelso Cassatt. who returned last week from n
summer spent In Newnort. Tho fmrU m.o
fashioned of garlands of lace, which were out
lined at the top with bands of French blue
shaded ribbon. The bodice was open at tho
neck and finished with a de Medici collar.
Mrs. Cnssett's hat was large, nnd was made
of cream-colored lace, and was trimmed with
small bunches of gay flowers.
