Tho Impression has gained currency,
becauso of tho popularity of tho auto
mobile, that carrlngo? aro no longer
manufactured ln very great quantities.
Yet tho commlttco on statistics at tho
convention of tho Carriage Builders'
National Association, which meets In
Atlantic City, N. J., September 25th to
October 2d, will show that considerably
over ono million horse-drawn chicles
wero built In this country last year.
Largo ns Is thh figure, It doeB not In
clude business, farm or trucking wagons,
but takes account only of such vehicles
as tho buggy, surrey, and other light
carriages.
Statistics show that thero wero mado
on an average of a million to a million
nnd a quarter horse-dtawn spring ve
hicles each year for eight years prior to
January 1, 1913, nnd during tho year
1913 tho number exceeded 1,200,000. Theso
figures, which aro partly duo to tho in
crease in population, naturally Inspire
confidence ln the present nnd tho futuro of
tho carriage and wagon Industry.
It Is fair to assume that tho vehicle
product of 1!)13 -wns sold for moro than
60.000.000. A minimum of $3i,000,000 ir
Invested In carriage factories In thli
country, to say nothing of tho enormous
cnpltnl lnolved In the wagon business,
while tho Investment ln manufacturing
establishments making materials nnd
parts exclusively for horse-drawn ve
hicles Is probably as much more.
The coming Atlantic City convention
Ic tho 42d to bo held by tho vehicle men's
organization, which was Instituted ln
1S72 making It ono of the very oldest
trado bodies in America. The associa
tion does not fix prices nor take any
action In labor matteis; Its functions
are mainly directed to tho uplift nnd
advancement of the Industry, and to the
promotion of n friendly spirit among Its
members.
The Can Inge Ilul'd.ri. National Asr.o
ciatton has been favored ln past jears,
at their conventions with tho presence of
a number of prominent men, who, al
though not ln the vehiclo buslines, never
theless weie pleased to address the car
riage builders on subjects of Interest to
them Among these men have been thu
late President MeKlnlcy, General Wil
liam Tecumtieh Slierman, Oliver 'Wen
dell Holmes, tho poet and others of
almost equal fame This jcar. Hon
John Barrett, director of the Tan-American
Union nt Washington, and formerly
United States Minister to several South
American countries, will address the as
sociation In connection with tho convention there
will bo held nn extensile exhibition of nil
materials, parts net machinery used in
vehicle building, which will bring to the
attention of the 1200 delegates all that is
new in theso lines
TIkto Is much room for optimism in
tho eatri.igo businostt nnd It will be a
contented and enthusiastic gathering of
piosperons m.uiutncturers that will crowd
tho Million poU.ir I'ler at Atlantic City
dining the List weik in M-ptenibei.
