Society Is looking forward to Its first Im
portant event In the opening of the 20th unntiAt
exhibition of the Bryn Mawr Horao Show As
sociation, which marks the autumnal social
season for Philadelphia. The event will begin
on the Poto Grounds nt Bryn Mawr on Mondny
and will continue through the week.
An especially Interesting nceompnnylng foa
turo of the exhibit will be tho first annual
Bryn Mawr Hound Show, which begins Tues
day and extends through four days. This sldo
event Is tho first exhibition especially for fox
hounds nnd beagles ever held in this country
nnd Is attracting national attention among
huntsmen. Hunt clubs from Massachusetts,
Vermont, New York, Virginia nnd Maryland
havo entered their packs.
Since 1910 tha horse show has extended
through flvo days, but this year tho exhibit
has been extended n dny nnd 25 new classes
have been added. Heavy draft horses are
being exhibited for the first time nt Bryn Mawr.
Addition of this class Is In recognition of tha
efforts of landowners In suburban Philadelphia
to Improve the breeds of this usoful typo ot
horscllcsh.
But the Ilryn Mawr rhow ,ns been Blnce Us
beginning primarily an exhibition of hunting
horses. Tho showing of harnc.s horses, saddlo
horses, hackneys, ponies and draft horses has
always been regarded by the patrons of tha
exhibit as of secondary Importance, nlthough
keen contests always develop among u)Cso en- '
tries.
Tho abandonment of tho Madison Square
Garden horso show In Now York this year on
account of the unsettled conditions caused by
tho European war, Is regarded by local horse
men as a factor that will Increase tho Im
portance of tho Bryn Mawr exhibit, socially as
well as In other reppects.
From a show of one day's duration held on
the terraco at tho Bryn Mawr Hotel and at
tended by about 250 persons, 20 years ngo,
the annual event has Increased In Importance
until today its ribbons nro the most coveted at
any show In the country. Its average dally
attendance is between 4000 and 6000.
This year prizes aggregating $0000 In valtio
will be awarded In tho various classes. Tho
most valuable prize for hunters Is the Radnor
Challenge Cup, valued at 50, which event
also carries a sweepstake of J100.
Tho Bryn Mawr Challcngo Cup for harness
horses Is valued at $230 with sweepstakes added,
and the challenge cup for the best team of
threo hunters, given by W. Hlnckle Smith, IX
worth over JM0. A total of 413 ribbons will be
awarded In tho 09 classes.
