Dr. Lewla Lautenbach Didn't Find
Rest There as Expected.
Dr. Louis J, Lautenbach, of S3 South
Blxtcenth street, Is homo from Europe
and Is exceedingly glad. He made the.
trip to get a little rest. He did not find
tho Journey a quieting one.

ately becamo objectionable characters. It
was Intimated to him that tho Govern
ment of Holland would bo pleased If he
quitted tho country. Dr. Lautenbach left
Holland In a baggage car. He finally
managed to reach London, Ho had money
equivalent to a couplo of American dol
lars and there was no hope of getting
more, as the banks were closed and
chocks wore not honored.
Dr. Lautenbach happened to be known
at a London hotel, where he was
housed until ho could get money and
passage back to tho United States. In
London Dr. Lautenbach said his namo
wag not popular. He was looked upon
with suspicion, as many persons believed
ho was a German.
GERMAN DAY WILL BE
DEVOTED TO PRAYERS
No Patriotic Celebration This Year
In Washington.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19.-aerman Day
In Washington this fall will bo observed
as a day of prayer, and all Germans In
Washington will father In churches. This
announcement was made today by Martin
Wlegand, president of the United Ger
man Societies. The willingness of the
Germans to moot exactly the spirit of
President Wilson's request for observnnco
of Btrlet neutrality In this country led
to the abandonment of the usual patriotic
celebration.
President Wilson Is much gratified by
the natlon-wldo response to his proclama
tion designating, at the suggestion of the
Pursue LEDonn, Sunday, October 4, as
"a day of prayer for peace."

Dr. Matthew Comnr Farrell, a. dentist,

brother, Bernard W, Farrell, 1829 South
58ih street, In his 33d year. Dr. Farrell
was graduated from tho Pennsylvania
Dental College i-lx years ago, hut for
tho Inst two years had been too 111 to
purBUo his practice. Ills death came as
the result of a nervous breakdown that
was first brought on by ovcrstudy when
at college. His widow survives.

ALLENTOWN, Pa., Sept lO.-Dr. Mnh
lon If. Deary, 71 years old, physician,
lawyer and Civil War veternn, died yes
terday, Ho served In tho 12Sth Pennsyl
vania Volunteers, and vins one of the
orators at the dedication of the Pennsyl
vania monument on tho battlefield of An
tletam. For a time, after tho war, he
lived In MlBsmirt. He owned considerable
property, and had a beautiful winter
homo In Florida almost within a stone
throw of that of William Jennings Bryan.

II. Uerkhclmer, Itcglster and Recorder
of Adams County, was found dend In bed
yesterday. A cripple for years, he slipped
and fell on tho Icy pavements last winter,
suffering additional Injuries from which
hn never recovered. He was elected
Register and Recorder In 1911 on the
Democratic ticket without opposition. He
was 37 years old and leaves a wife and
two children.

today, when the body of James E. Sulli
van, late secretary of tho Amateur Ath
letlo Union, was taken through tho
streets of New York. After services were
held at the Cathollo Church of St.
Aloyslus, the body vas taken to Calvary
Cemetery for burial.
The Executive Committee of tho A. A.
U. attended the funeral In a body. Mes
sages of condolenoe poured In upon Sulli
van's relatives by the hundreds.
MRS. FRANK LESLIE
Publisher, Editor and Author Who
Regained Business Lost by Husband.
NEW YORK. Sept. 19. Mrs. Frank
Leslie, publisher, editor and author, died
last night at her homo at the Sherman
Square Hotel. She had been In fulling
health for about six weeks. Miss Mar
querlto Linton Glontworth tho writer,
was with her when she died.
Tho Baroness do Bazusm, as Mrs. Leslie
preferred to bo known, was born In New
Orleans, Ln In 1831. Sho was of nn old
French Huguenot family. Hor father
gave her a liberal education ut his home.
tutoilng her principally In I rench, Span
ish, Italian, German and Latin. At this
age of 13 .iho began writing for publica
tion, and her work attracted some atten
tion, notably that of Henry Sartor, who
was known by his pen namo of Frank
Leslie.
Shs married Mr. Leslie, and when ho
died in 1SS0. leaving his estate $u'00,000 in
debt and his IS publications In the hands
of trustees, his wife under the law as
sumed the namo of Frank Leslie and
took peisonal charge of the business.
By her personal management sho suc
ceeded in placing the properties on a
paying baMs.
In the middle eighties Mrs. Leslie mar
lied William Wilde, a brother of Obcar
Wilde. She later obtained n divorce from
him.

Catharine C. Kclle, 6-' years old, died of
diphtheria at hor home, 1617 Filbert
street, yesterday. She Is survived by her
husbnnd, a teamster, 1806 Filbert street.

CENTRE VALLEY, Pn.. Sept. 19.-Mrs.
Caroline Wilt, S3 years old, wlfo of James
Wilt, died after nn Illness of 24 hours of
apoplexy. Hor husband, a retired hotel
man, who Is In his 97th year, Is the old
est voter In Lehigh County! On August
23 Mr. and Mrs. Wilt celebrated their "1st
wedding anniversary. Sho faves four
children.

Vassar Square, heje. Ho was 7t jcars
old.
Mi. White uas one of a band of pioneer
hutel men who early In the SO's Inaus
urated the winter and spring: seasons at
the shore, Atlantic City having been prim
to that tlmo a summer tesort solely. He
erected the Hotel Luray, which was
desttoyed by fire In 10O1 In 1S85, with
his three sons, lie built tho Marlborough
and six years later the Blenheim, of
which they havo remained owners and
mananers ever since.
Mr. White was a Trlend and his an
cestors were prominent members of this
religious society In New Jersey and Penn
sylvania. In 186J Mr. White manied Mary Klrby
Allen, of Haddontleld, N. J. Mr. White
and the late Clement A. Grlscom and
Isaac H. Clothier, mid the three gjils
whom they respectively married were
Intimate fi lends and each of these three
couples livd tn celebrate their golden
wedding anniversary.
Mr. White is sunlved by bis widow
and six children.

Jr. (formerly Mrs. Urovcr Cleveland) and
party; Mrs. W. II. Bissell and Howard
Croker and his sisters, who are taking
the body of their mother to New York
for burial.
Mrs. Croker was the wlfo of Richard
Cioker. formerly the Tammany .Hall
leader In New York. She died recently
in Austria.
