The story of Trunk Chance's rpslKim
tlon from the Now York Amorlonn League
club Is one ns undent ns the lmtlonal
eamo Itself. It hus oor been the policy
of the majority of club owners to adopt
a shifting method of developing a team,
rather than one of watchful waiting,
which has been so highly successful In
the case of the Athletics of this cltv
and the Giants of New York
Frank Chance did not reMgtt because
he had not developed a club with could
compete with the better organizations ot
Ban Johnson's circuit, but because lip
was not allowed to develop It This
friction between the owneis and the man
agers Is the thorn In the side of base
ball, and at times ha actually been a
menace to Its very elstence
To build up a winning ball club, Connie
Mack says, requires at least live ears
Chance has been In New York a little
less than two seasons. It Is true that
ho does not seem to have made nnv more
progress this jonr than lie had at the
close of the season of 1511. Yet tTifi
would probably be the ui-i even If he had

nnd that to be successful he must hold
the reins In his own hands and not be
driven with a halter around his own
neck.
From several quarters theft; seems to
be a rumor afloat that, after all. Chance
will remain In New York, at least, for the
rest of the season. That, however, has
little hearing on the question Chance
has been hampered and he will continue
to bo hampered as long ns the moCuls
of the Highlanders bellee that they know
more about running the details of a ball
club than one who has captured three
pennants.

NEW YORK. Sept 14. Passed up as
a pennant contender weeks ago, the St.

and are again threatening the Boston
Braes and New York Giants National
League leadeis.
Following their double Wctory over the
Reds yesterday the Cardinals are In third
place, only four and one-half games be
hind Stalllngs' leaders.
Coming strong behind the Cardinals
are Hank 0'Da's Cubs But one game
separates them from Hugglns' cohorts,
as they, too, won yesterday, beating the
Pirates
The Cubs and the Cards, however, haie
a tough battle ahead In the pennant
chase Practically all of the remainder
of their games are to be played on the
road, while the Brases and the Giants
will be at home

piovo decidedly Interesting and, what Is
more, It will servo ns excellent practice
for thoso competing In tho championship

In former years the open championship
of Philadelphia was only at thirty-six

Hams, 2d, the national singles champion,
It Is difficult to Imagine either Yale,
