Fall Caro for Asparagus
Much of the value of asparagus beds
depend upon the care they receive in the
fall as a preparation for wintering. As
early as the stalks begin to turn yellow,
they should be cut, dried, and placed in
a pile, and burned. Too much care can
not be taken to prevent the seed from
falling upon the bed, becoming covered
with soil, germinating in spring, as
these young plants render the roots too
thick in the bed, and being near the sur
face will make but feeble growth, and
be of little if any value,:but rather a det
riment to the rest , of the bed.
After the removal of the stalks, cover
the bed with a coat of good tine manure,
and fork it into the Bo down to the
crown of the plants. This manure, act
ed upon by the fall rains, will wash
down among the roots, giving them the
food necessary for spring growth, in
creasing the size and earliness of the
stalks.
Just before the setting in of winter,
cover the bed several inches thick with
coarse stable litter, to remain as a pro
tection from frost, and by its decompo
sition and washing down add to the fer
tility of the soil. Plants that have been
set but one or two years and before they
come to cutting regularly may be cov
ered with a few inches of good soil taken
from the sides of the bed. After they
have attained a good size and the roots
have spread, this may he omitted, as
digging ut the side of the bed would in
jure the spreading roots. The winter
covering may be stirred early in spring,
the coarser straw raked olf and the line
manure forked into the bed. This treat
rnentunnually will ensure a good supply
of early, succulent and large asparagus.

Apple Trees.
A few years since we used to cultivate
amongst our trees, but took a lesson

Grant's Economy
We have before us a very interesting
document, prepared in the (Alice of Secre
tary of the Treasury, and bearing Mr.
Boutwell's signature—namely, the receipts
and expenditures of the government for the
last fifteen years. The expenditure is di
vided into live items, viz: I. For Civil and
Miscellaneous. 2. War Department.
Navy Department. 4. Indians and Pen
sions. 5. Interest on Public Debt. The
item civil and miscellaneous in these state
ments includes the premium paid on the
purchase of United States securities. Let
us now see how very extraordinarily eco
