    Mints to Sarmers,
Keeping a Thousand Hens.
With n flock of 1,000 fowls, at least
six acres are requisite. Some have
given this rule, an acre to each hun
dred. This area should be fenced in
with boards or pickets, 'and houses
erected, large enough to accommodate
MO fowls for roosting, shelter from
storms, and laying. It is not essential
that these houses should be expensive,
but they should face the South, and the
-onts should be partially or,entirely
; dazed, The glazing should be by sash
which may to Opened easily by
hinges above, and may be left open
through the summer, to permit a free
circulation of air. The care of these
houses should be intrusted to a capable
person, as on their proper management
the success of the poultry largely de
pends. In addition to the poultry
house, there should be provided numbers
of low sheds, beneath which the fowls
may take shelter from the heat of the
HMI or from storms.
Care should be taken to prevent the
ingress of vermin, skunks, weasels, &0.,
to the grounds, :aid one or more good
dogs should be emilined within the en
closure, care being taken to secure does
which will not trouble the fowls, but
which are good watch dog,, and vigi
lant. 'An abundance of pure water is
also absolutely necessary, and unless a
brook runs through or a pond is located
on the land, water should be brought by
F:1111 Or pumped by a windmill from a
well. Fowls drink a great quantity of
water, and it should be of :L.•i pure quality .
as Call be obtained. The prei, aration of
the grounds, anti building of the houses
and sheds having been the
may be procure d.

GARRISON LIFE IN ALASKA
Infamous Ontribres Upon Citizens or PM
ha by the putted Stoles Troops.
[From the Olympia (W. T.) Standard.)
By tho arrival of the steamer George 8.
Wright at Victoria, from Alaska, we have
the Timer of the 13th ult. The proprietor
of the paper, Mr. Murphy, having deter
mined to remove the concern to this city,
published a valedictory, and in this man
ner refers to the conditioner society which
prevails in that distant territory: "No less
than eight murders have been committed
in,Sitka inside of the last three years, and
every murderer has escaped the punish
ment he deserved except one, who is 110 W
in the military guardhouse awaiting trial,
and unless we soon get n court he will us
eape the punishment ho so richly deserves.
Wo have seen WOlllOll and girls knocked
down in the street by an army officer and a
U. S. postal agent. We have seen these two
titlieers on the same day knock down poor
inoffensive Russians, and the army ()dicer
hand the postal agent a pitiful to kill an
American. We save known army talkers
to force their way into private Russian
houses and attempt to take liberties with
the Werlloll inmates that in any other mutt
rev but Alaska would cost them their lives.
• have t,Ollll two companies of soldiers
stationed right in the city, many of whom
were not tit to run at large outside the
walls er tl State prisrnr, and who force their
way into Russian houses as though it, Was a

result ofall this Simply that all theretints I
