Women Clerks at Wasblnffton* Only three of the seven Executive De partments of Washington employ women .clorks, Six thousand! clerks, paid about $9,000,000 per annum, are attached to* the seven Departments, and of this large num ber only six hundred are women. In the Treasury Department over 3,000 clerks are employed, COO of whom are females. The clerkships of the men are divided into four classes. The lowest clasß, styled the first, receive $1,200 per annum; the second, $1,400; the third, $1,600; the fourth $l,BOO, while the salary of a chief clerk is $2,006 and up wards. The womep, however, only receive $OOO per annum, the salary being fixed at one-half the average compensation paid to male clerks, and complaints having been made that the pay is not sufficient, a short time ago a resolution 'was passed by the House of Representatives, declaring that women in the Departments who perform the same work as men should receive the same pay. Soon after the passuge of this resolution, it is reported that about 50 of the 100 women clerks, who were discharged some months ago for want of work, were reinstated and detailed for duty in the Third Auditor’s Office, in the Quartermaster’s Division, where they were employed on Quartermaster’s accounts. The Patent Office of the Interior Depart ment, at irregular intervals, employs about fifty women, sending the work to their homes by messengers. These women are employed, principally, in copying drafts of patents, for which they are paid at the rate ot ton cents per hundred words. This work is required to bo performed with the great est accuracy, and many of these copyists arc reported to bo very skillful with the pon, and to execute the work in a superior style. Tho Post-office Department employs fifty women in He Dead Letter Office in redi recting tho letters, which are first opened by men, who lor this merely mechanical work receive ealnries of the first, and some oven of tho second grade. Tho letters, it is alleged, must bo opened by men, because the contents are frequently improper to be road by females. The War Department em ploys only übout thirty women, widows of soldiers, in copying accounts, the same grado of work which is performed by a ma jority of the men clerks in all the Depart inonttj. In addition to tho female clerks tbefo are about three women engaged in the Government Printing Ol fieo in work of vurious kinds. Forty live are employed in managing the small presses, which print blanks and other lorras. Tho others are engaged Infolding, trimming, stitching and similar processes. They are, most of them, paid according to tho umount of work they perform, being allowed forty per cent, more than is paid to women in similar establishments. A great pressure is exercised upon the Government priming office to furnish employment to meritorious but poor females. No women, however, are employed in the type-setting department, but the Superintendent has expressed his readiness to employ them in this work as fast as any good women type setters shall apply, and has, it is said, an nounced that lie would pay thqjn the same tor a thousand eras that he pays the min who now do the work. An opportunity, it is stated, will thereby bo afforded -good workwomen to make $2-1 per week. The Superintendent, it is reported, declares that ho will employ women in preference to men as fast as they apply.— l’hila. Ledger.
