New Patents.—Francis P. Hart, as-
Blgner to self and Dr. Samuel Keneagy, of
Strasburg, has obtained letters patent for
an improvement in breaking the surge on
harness o& vehicles. This is a highly de
sirable invention, and one that cannot fail
to be appreciated and approved by all who
will try it.
Henry McCullough, of Marietta, has also
received letters patent for an improved
collurfor pipes in hot bfitet furnaces. This
invention will save hundreds of dollars in
hot blast farnaces.

Keeping Potatoes, —-It is, perhaps,
needless lor us to caution our readers
against leaving their polutoes exposed to
the light either out doors/6r in the cellar.
They will, if so turn green,
become soggy, and pfniost unfit for use.
They should, if possible, be kept in a dark,
cool place, away fronj all dangor of frost
in winter. We’ a \fliTnk potatoes used to
keep better in times gone by in the old
dark cellars, tbun now, in the modern cel
lars, with their numerous windows. Some
are In the habit of keeping their potatoes
in pits in the ground, dug deep enough to
be sate from the frosts. This may keep
them wel), but it is a troublesome plan.
Wo have known them to bo kept in the
very host condition in barrels, und covered
with sand.
Incohiuxt.—We notice in ono of the New
York daily newspapers the statement that
“ the tightness in the money market in
Lancaster, Pa., inay be seen from the fact
that ono of its chartered banks was recently
so heavily pressed that the officers of the
institution were under the necessity of posi
lively refusing to allow a $GOO,
drawn by one of the most substantial busi
ness firms of the city, to lay ovor for a single
day.jthough it was offered to boguarranteed
by a wealthy citizen, who had indorsed the
note, and who is a Jurgo stockholder In the
bunk.” ’ v
Upon inquiry wo are informed that this
statement is incorrect and that no refusal
as above stated could have occurred for the
reason intimated.

Ind,, to purchase 2000 partridges to stock
Dauphin county. The first installment will

spring then turned loose. This is a com
mondable enterprise, and deserving of ini

Fatal Accident.—J olin Crouse, afurra
er, aged about -is years, residing near Ris

the 23 inst, and wus almost instantly killed.

The Texas Cattle Plague.
The commissioners .appointed by the
Governor of Ohio fo investigate the causes,
<£&, of the cattle plague .in Texas,. have
made their report, from which we take the
following points of interest:
Concerning the essential nature of the
disease it may be.,stated that the:blood
seems always to.be prominently involved*
Microscopic investigations have revealed
the presence (in the blood) of a minute
fungus, or, more properly, the spores J'of
such plants* The spores have also -Men
found in the blood (to a less extent) of
healthy Texas oattle; but they have not
been’found in blood of our native cattle.
Whether the spores are the cause ot the re
sult of the disease, or are merely a con
comitant, remains ' to be demonstrated.
Numerous diseases of the human system
were formerly accounted for on the spore
theory; for example, various forms of
fevers, cholera, measles, &c,, were supposed
to be produced by the presence in the blood
of certain fungus spores. The potato rot,
100, was at one time supposed to be due to
the same cause. But this theory has now
been discarded by physicians and scien
tific men generally.
The period of the incubation of the dis
ease, or the first appearance of its earliest
symptoms, varies from fifteen to thirty, or
even forty days, dating from the time the
native cattle have been first put upon the
grounds or yards previously occupied by
Southern cattle.
Of native cattle, milch cows are the most
susceptible to the disease; steers and oxen.
are somewhat less so, ana calves still less.
Horse-*, mules, and also deer, have died of
symptoms of the Texas cattle disease in
Arkansas, Missouri, and also in Illinois.
Though the disease under consideration is
everywhere believed to orignatefrom Texas
cat'le, yet no one seemed to know positive
■y whether the disease does really exist
among Texas cattle while they are allowed
to remain undisturbed upon their native
pasture; nor is anything definitely known
uh to its causes, or the circumstances under
which it has its origin and development.
No remedy for this disease, upon which
reliance can be placed, has yet been found.
Very nearly all the cases which have oc
curred among native cattle have proved
fatal In a few days. Texas and Cherokee
cattle are more likely to recover. A small
number of sick animals recover in Ohio
under the nse of calomel, given internally
in sixty-grain doses, twice daily, until free
purgution was produced. Quinine, with
diluted sulphuric acid and water, were
given in Illinois with success in a few cases.
The internal use of carbolic acid baa been
confidently recommended, tdo recommen
dation being based upon the theory that the
diseased condition of the blood is caused by
the tungous plams or sporesabove referred
to. Proper cure during transportation
would prevent the spread of the disease, and
render it l.esa dangerous, and more amen
able to treatment.

At 0 P. M. {Saturday, the gaa escaping
from a break in the Manhattan Gas Com
pany's main pipe on Broadway, New York,
forced ill way into the vaults|under the side
walk in front of the Olympic Theatre and
the adjoining store at No. 622 Broadway.
An employee of the theatre was directed to
tind where the gas came from that had al
ready manifested its presence in the ticket
office and lobby. As the workman, with a
torch, entered the vault a slight explosion
occurred, and the man was slightly burned.
! Several employees of the theatre, also en
gaged by the gas company, went into the
vaults and lighted the gas that came in jets
through the masonry of the wall.
A number of the tire departmentand one
from the insurance patrol remained to guard
against the further spread of the flumes,
aud, as the time for opening the doors of
the theatre for the evening performance
had arrived, tickets were sold at the box
office, and at a few minutes after 8 o’clock
an audieuce of more than fifteen hundred
persons were seated in the theatre, laugh
ing at the pantomime, while a Are was
burniog that might at any moment, if the
break suddenly enlarged, cut off the main
exit from the theatre. Several gentlemen
acquainted with the peculiarities of burn
ing gus said there was not the slightest
danger of any further spread of the flumes
in the vaults; but bad any person, even
with the best inientions, suddenly told
that immense audience of the state of
affairs, in all probability n panic would
have ensued, and many valuable lives
been lost. In the vuult under No. 0221
Broadway, opening into the basement ad
joining the basement of the theatre, the gas
was burning in twenty different places, aud
assumed all shades of color from the pur
ple of the small jets to the Grunge and red
of the large flumes, and comiug from be
tween tbe crevices in the grauite and brick
work, had the appearance of a smelting fur
nuoe-hi full blast. The largest flame in thif
vault was about three feet in length aud
several inches broad. The wull around it
was quite hot.
In the Olympic vault the fire was burn
mg in five or six places, the largest flume
being in the lower corner and about six
feet in length, running up toward the roof.

with old cunvas “properties,” beehives,
swans, donkeys, dec. The engineer of the
gas works was sent for, and with a gang of
men built a large fire on tbe street to get
the frost from the pavement and uncover
the main. The vault lights on the street
were opened to ventilate the vaults, and
after the theatre closed the gas in the main
was turned off. The gas burning during
tho entire performance in the theatre.
The OilfTbulers— A Strange Trade.
At a meeting of the Working Women’s
Association of Now York, on Monday even
ing last, Mrs. Norton, chairman of a Com
mittee of Investigation in the condition,
habits, laborand earningsof therag pickers
of tbe metropolis, presented quite an iuter
resting report. She auitl that tbe mere
collection of rags forms but a part of the
business of these chiffoniers. They not
only pass these into their bags, but pick
up bom s, pieces of glass, old iron, boots,
shoes, scraps of leather—all are equally
valuable. After the rag-picker has tilled
his bag or basket, and often His hat and
pockets, he goes home and assorts his
wares, and then sometimes makes another
round. The labors being usually at three
or four o'clock in the morning. Some
make their rounds in tbe middle of the
night, starting at ten o’clock. About one
or two in tbe afternoon he gets horae. The
different articles are placed in different re
ceptacles and left there to accumulate until
thedealer comes round.
The price paid to therag-picker for paper
and rags is three cents per pound; glass
one cent a pound ; for bones, and other
garbage, fifty cents a bushel; leather, boots
and shoes are bargained for. They earn
from fourty cents a day to ten dollars a
week. In this, as well us in anything else
there aro grades of wurkmen—some living
.as well as other workmen, and some from
hund to mouth. They resentevery infringe
ment ot their vocation. The large majority
of these are Germans, who, coming out
here poor, are compelled to accept this way
of living. There is a small colony in Wil
let street, consisting of 106 families aud 460
persons.' Some have comfortable homes,
send their children to school, and when
they have earned enough, emigrate to
farms in the West. The whole number is
about 1 200.
The old rugs and paper which they pick
up are given to the paper-makers, and
return to the breakfast table of the people
in the shape of newspapers. The old bones
are transformed into parasol handles, also
into tooth-brushes and other articles of
trade. Pieces of iron often find tbeir way
into the boudoir in the shop© of the Grecian
bend-and paniers. She had come across
more than one instance in which the rug
picker had been changed into a Wall-street
stock gambler. Nothing is refused by him
nothing is filthy save that which he can
not tiud. He is a living peripatetic sermon
which teaches us not to despise the day of
small things.
The Stroudsburg Murder Trial.
[ Stroudsburg, Pa., Dec. 30.—' The case of
the Commonwealth against Wo. Brooke
aud Charles Orme, for the murder of Theo
dore Broudhead, of the Delaware Water
(.hip, was called up on Monday morning
Judge Barrett presiding. The whole dav
wus spent in euipanneiling a jury and in
the opening argument of tho District Attor
ney.
The first witness called was Thomas
Broadhead, brother of the deceased, who
. I wus with Theodore ut the time of tbe mur-
I dor. The evidence occupied half tbe [day,
and was listened to with attention by the
crowd in the court room. A larceny had
been perpetrated-at Thomas Broadhead’s
house on the morning of the 25th of Sep.
Mr. Thomas Broadhead, with his biother,
was in pursuit of the perpetrators, and they
came upon them just below the Kiltining
House in the public road. Thomas came
up to them first, and told them they were
supposed to be guilty of tbe crime, and in
sisted that they should return with him.
Brooke seemed Inclined to comply, but
Orme refused. Broadhead stepped between
.them, took hold of Orme and told bim
he must go back. Brooke then stepped
back a few steps towards tbe house and
then both drew pistols and
shot down Theodore who had just come up,
lollowing with other snots in quick succes
sion at Thomas w r ho fortuuately escaped
with his life. • .
At the opening of the afternoon sessirai
there wus a greut rush for seats, and the
crowd stormed the entrance, and tbe room
whs so densely packed that it was with
difficulty that the jury could be brought to
tbeir seats. The trial will last four or five
days;-

Nearly 250,000 salmon eggs arrived on

They were packed in baskets of wet moss
well surrounded with straw, and had trav
eled 120 mites on sleds, 320 by rail, and 280
miles by water; but they were so well pro
tected by the straw from the cold, and
from the jarring incident to traveling
that they arrived in good condition, so
far as examined. They were also
found to be well impregnated aod sufficient
ly advanced to batch, at the present rate of
development, early in January. The gen
tlemen Engaged in getting them at Mira
michi met with a prejudice against their
operations on the part of that community
so violent- as to nearly compel them sev
eral times to give up the enterprise alto
gether. The Canadian Government was
quite unwilling to give permission to take
the spawn at all, and only granted it very
.reluctantly at last, on condition that one
half of the ova taken should be deemed

longs to the husband alone, she having no
legal interest therein whatsoever.
5. The children, fruit of the marriage, be
loog to the husband, not to the wife. In case
of separation, he is entitled to the oustody.

Nicholas Held, of Honesdale, fell dead
the other day, having, on the day of his
death, acted as a pall-bearer at tbe funeral
of Christian Houser, who was killed by the
caving in of a bauk.
While several little boys were playing
around a brush beup, at the mouth of Two
Mile run in Venango county, the other day,
one of them pushed his companion Into the
flames, when he was burned to death.
A terrible ghost has been seen near Port
Treverton, esuyder county, which is de
scribed as being as big as a ‘‘full grown
call, looks like a dog, has ears that reach
the ground, and blows fire.”

The regular Government Commissioners
have pronounced the Union Pacific Railroad
b® FIRST CLASS in every respect, and the
Special Commission appointed by the Pre'i
dent says:
“Taken as a whole, THE UNION PACIFIC
RAILROAD HAS BEEN WELL CONSTRUCT
ED, AND THE GENERAL ROUTE FOR THE
LINE EXCEEDINGLY WELL SELECTED.
The energy and perseverance with which the
work has been urged forward, and the rapidi
ty with which it has been executed are with
out parallel in history,’and In grandeur and
magnitude of undertaking it has never been
equalled.” The Report states that any defl-
clencles that exist are only lko;e incident to
all new roads, and that could not have been
avoided without materially retarding the pro
gres of the great work. Such deficiencies are
supplied by all railroad companies alter the
completion of the line, when and wherever
experience shows them to be necessary. The
report concludes by saying that " the country
has reason to congratulate ltsell that the great
work of national importance is so rapidly ap
proaching .completion under such favorable
auspices.” The company now have in use 137 J
locomotives aud nearly 2,000 cars of all de- j
scrlptlons. A large additional equipment is •
ordered tc?Ee ready in the Spring. The grad- j
Ing nearly completed, and tie? distributed for j
1-0 “lies In advance of tho western end of the '
track. Fully 120 miles of Iron for new trrfck i
are now delivered west of ihe Missouri River, j
and B 0 miles more are en route. The total ex-!
peDdltures for construction purposes in ad- I
vance of the completed portion of the road is
not less than eight million dollars. j
Besides a donation from the Government of ;
12,800 acres of land per mile, the Company is I
entitled to a subsidy in U. 8. Bonds on its line j
as completed and accepted, at the average rate !
of about $.0,000 per mile, according to the dffl- |
culties encountered, for whlcn the Govern
ment. takes a second lien as security. The !
Company have already received $22,153,0.0 of ■
this subsidy, of which $1,250,t00 was paid Tec. 1
oth. and $OlO,OOO Dec. lilh.

By Its charter, the Company lg permitted to
issue Its own FIRST MORTG AGE BONDS to:
the same amount as the Govern meet Bonds
and no mors. These Bonds are a First Mort
gage upon the whole road and all lta equip,
menu. Such a mortgage upon whaf, for a long 1
time. Win be the only railroad connecting the
Atlantic and Pacific States, takes the highest
rank as a safe security. The earnings from the
” local bußl uess jor the year ending June
30,1858, on an average of 172 miles, were over
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS, which, after pay
ing all expenses, were much more than suffi
cient to cover all Interest liability upon that
distance, and the earnings for the last live
months have been 52,380.870. They would have
been greater, If the road had not been taxed to
Its utmost capacity to.transportlts own mater-'
lals for construction. The Income from the
great passenger travel, the China freights, and
the supplies for the new Rocky Mountain
States and Territories must be ample for all
Interest and other liabilities. No political ac
lion can reduce the rate of Interest. It must
remain for thirty years -taeper cent, per annum '
in add, now equal to between eight and nine I
per cent. In currency, T/te principal u then I
payable in gold. Ifabond with such guaran- '
tees were Issued by the Government, iu mar- I
ket price would not he less than from’ 20 to 25 '
per cent, premium. As the bonds are Issued i
under Government authority and supervision
upon what is very largely a Government work I
they must ultimately approach Government !
prices. No other corporate bonds are made so
secure,
