Brig. Gen: Wellington 11. Ent.
The Democratic Candidate for Surveyor
General of Pennsylvania.
It has been so much the habit of Rad
ical orators and newspapers to make
charge of disloyalty and other heinous
sins against their opponents, that we
have been induced to publish from the
work called the " History of the Penn
sylvania Reserves," gotten up at the
special instance. and request of Gover
nor Curtin and Other most " loll" peo
ple, a brief extinct. If there is any
more faithful and patriotic citizen, or
one deserving more heartily an endorse
ment at the hands of the people than
our candidate we are free to say that we
have not found him.- General Ent was
wounded at Bethesda Church, and ap
pointed a Brigadier General by brevet
for meritorious and distinguished ser
vices on the battle-field. He holds no
honors from the safe places in the quar
termaster or pay departmbnts. The re
giment was honorably mustered out of
service with its distinguished officers in
June, 1861.
Wellington 11. Ent, Colonel of the
Sixth, was born on the 18th of August,
1811, in Columbia county, Pennsylva
nia. After receiving a primary educa
tion he entered Dickinson Seminary, at
Williamsport, in August, 1855, and
graduated from that institution in June,
ISIS. Soon after his graduation he be
came a studentat law in the office of
Robert F. Clark, Esq., at Bloomsburg.
He prosecuted his professional studies
with great zee! ; entered the law de
partment of the University of Albany,
in September ' 15511,
graduated in the
summer of Isso, and in the same year
comencei the practice of his profession
in his native county.
He was appointed Inspector General,
with the rank of Lieutenant General
Dana, commanding Ninth Division
Pennsylvania Militia. Immediately af
ter hearing that the rebels had attacked
Fort Sumter, lie reported to General
Dana for duty, and on the 16th of April
was directed to raise two companies of
infantry in Columbia county. The
companies were speedily organized, and
reported for service, but owing to ,the
great rush of volunteers at that time,
but one of them was accepted. After
securing the command of this company
for his friend, Dr. W. W. Ricketts, Col
onel Ent accepted the First Lieutenan
cy for himself. This company, called
"Pile Iron Guards," was uniformed at
the expense of the citizens, and was
kept at Bloomsburg under lly drill,
until it was accepted into the service
and ordered to larrisburg. Upon the
organization of the Sixth Reserve regi
ment, it became company A; Captain
ItAcketts was elected colonel of the regi
ment, and Lieutenant Ent was promo
ted to 1111 the vacancy, and was commis
cloned to rank as captain from the Stith
of April, 1561.
Soon after the regiment arrived at
Washington, in July, 1861, Captain Ent
waS.detalled In command of an escort
arcs' guard to Major Myers, Chief Signal
/pieta of the United States. and made
a tour up die Potomac froni Washing
ton to the headquarters of General
Banks, near Frederick. On his return
lie was detailed, at the request of Major
Myers, on iltity with the signal corps,
and assisted the major to eitablish the
signal camp of instruction at ( ieorge
town. Subsequently he was placed in
con mand of Dais camp, winch became
one of the permanent institutionsof the
army. teneral McCall, however, Was
unwilling to part with an officer of so
much promise, without a slum , - '
effort
to retain him in the Reserve Corps.
The general's repeated applications
finally suceeded, and Captain Ent was
ordered to return to his regiment. The
progress he had made in acquiring a
knowledge of the duties in the signal
service had secured for him the com
mand of the signal party which accom
panied Sherman's expedition to Port
Royal; he therefore reluctantly obeyed
the order that remanded him to the
command of his company and forc:Al
him to relinquish a field in which he
had already won the confidence of his
superior officers.
Captain Ent resumed his duties with
his company a few days before the di
vision was moved across the Potomoc ;
was detailed on the stall' of Colonel Inc-
Calmont, cumin:mill ler the Third Bri
gade. ]tut 1 ;j,ineral Met 'all again ordered
hint to his regiment, which was greatly
in need of his presence, many of the
ollieers being absent sick.
The battle of Drainesville occurred
shortly' after his return, in which Capt.
Ent participated with distinction. He
renu4ined with Ids regiment, in the reg
ular routine of his duties, until August
7th, 15)12, when he was detailed on re
• milting duty by I feneral Seymour, then
conunanding the division , with the hope
also, that Ids health, which had been
greatly impaired, Might be restored.
Ile proceeded to I larrisburg just be
foiii the army was ordered to evacuate
Harrison's Landing; he remained there
on duty until Pope's army was being
driven from Bull Run to Washington.
Hearing of this disaster, he determined
to rejoin his old comrades at once, and
participate in their glory aud their suf
fering. Knowing the delay and
difli
culty attending a regular application,
he sought and obtained the charge of
some reernits• to be sent to Alexandria,
whom lie hurried to their destination,
and turned them over to the °nicer in
charge of Camp Distribution, then pro
ceeded to the trout. Captain Ent went
tot teneral Seymourand statedhis desire
lo go on active duty with his regiment,
and, with the assent or, his eommander,
joinedghis old command just after it
had passed through Washington to en
ter upon the Maryland campaign.
At the battle or south Mountain lie
was placed iii command of two compa
nies, with orders to charge against the
enemy holding the summit on the ex
treme right of the !Me. Whilst, those
two companies were rapidly as possible
toiling up the mountain side under a
most terrific fire, three other companies
were ordered to join them. With these
' live companies Captain Ent completed
the charge, routed the 'enemy in front,
and, with the First regiment on his
left, rose to the summit and opened a
withering lire on the enemy's flank,
which had the effect of assisting very
materially in breaking the left flank of
Wei rebel army. In this tiliarge he lost
one-third of Ids command, and received
slight bruise in the hip front a ball
tclsich had glanced from a rock.
At the hattle of Antietam he fully
maintained his n-putation for skill and
bravery, nut was in a few days there
after prienotcd to the majority of his
regiment.
Late in Novem her, k5:2, when Colonel
Sinclair was assigned to the command
of a brigade, the lieutenant-colonel
befog ill and unfit for duty, Major Ent
assumed the conunand of the regiment,
and on Ihe':>l of April, 1863 lie was
eommissioned I,iontenant-Colonel, to
rank fronl the '2(101 of November, 1862 ;
on the 2:fil of July he was promoted to
the colonelcy, to rant: from May 23d,
1803.

sure cure for altruist all diseases to which
fowls, both young and old, are Babied. The
season for gapes is close at hand, and every
poultry breeder who desires to have success
with has young flocks ought to procure one or
