Franur.N.—The Friendship Fire Company, No. 2, of this city, gave their annual Hop at Fulton Hal on Wednesdayhist s whieh was decidedly:the largest and gayest party of the present sea son, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. The promenade, led • by two gallant "tire sharps," came off at 101 o'clock It was most admirably conducted, and was participated in by 110 couples. There were very many of both sexes who Joined in the festivities of the evening, but did not take part in the promenade. After the prome nade bad formed in column of sixteen a breast, and had marched near to the front of the stage, where Miller's Superb Orches tra was playing a favorite march, the column was halted and the must's ceased, when a Commit tee of the United States Fire Company, No. 21, of Philadelphia, appear od upon the stage with a testimonial to be presented to the Friendship Boy.. The Committee of the United States consisted of William H. Adams, Isaac J. Brown and_ Harry D. Cress, and the testimonial was a handsome walnut frame, with a heavy gilt rim on the inside, surrounding twenty-nine photographs of the members of the United ..States Fire Company, who visited Lances. in October last and participated in the Great Firemen's Parade at that time. The frame was ornamented with several fire insignia. On the top was a fine gilt shield, with an eagle perched thereon, having in his beak two tassels and a long scroll - , which con tained in capital letters "UNITED STATES FIRE COMPANY." On the right side of the frame were two gilt torches crossed ; on the loft side two gilt spanners crossed, while at the bottom were two gilt axes crossed. Among the photographs wo observed a number of familiar faces, one of which was that of "Uncle Sake Trlpler," the oldest firemen in Philadelphia. The photographs worn grouped around an oval card in the centre of the frame, which contained the following resolutions, executed In German text and script letters in an ornamental style of penmanship PHILADELPHIA., November oth, 1867. At a stated meeting of the United States Fire Company hold this evening, it was unanimously Resolved, That the sincere and :heartfelt thanks of this Company be, and they are hereby tendered to the FRIENDSHIP FIRE Co., No, 2,:0f Leuzcaster,Penn'a, for the cor dial reception and kind treatment given us during our visit to that city, October 16th, 17th and 18th, 1867. Resolved, That a suitable testimonial be prepared, expressive of our sense of the courtesies tendered us, and presented to ihe FRIENDSIIIE FIRE CO. No. 2. Witness bur hand and the seal of the Com pany, this 29th day of April, 1808. J.Was. Su.sw, President. Joust Cusps, Secretary. Harry D. Cress stepped forward, cid in n pertinent and complimentary speech pre sented the testimonial on behalf of the United States Fire Company, which was received by one of the members of the Friendship Fire Company, who responded eloquently to the remarks of Mr. Cress. Prof. Haselmayer, the celebrated Magician was present, who played a capital Mazurka of his own composition, and a Grand Med ley arranged by himself, upon the " Stylo. corn)" to the delight of all present. The dancing was kept up till the "woo sine' hours" of early dawn, on Thursday, when all retired to their homes expressing. themselves highly gratified with the pleas ures of the occasion, which will serve to mark another over metnorablo event in the history of the Lancaster Fire Depart merit, and 114 the establishment of fraternal fooling between the Friendship and United States Fire Companies, Tn L+'rairr•Houn Lew.—The following la the text of the Ltght•Hour law passed at the last Houton of the Legislature. MATTERS IN TILE LOWER IgNi3.—A spec ial correspondent of the Oxford Press fur nishes it the following items from the South ern part of this county : A select school of advanced scholars has been opened at the village of Penn 11111, Fulton twp. It is conducted by Wm. Al. Way, n teacher of more than twenty years experience. The surveying party that has been placed on the route of the Columbia &Port Depos• it It. It. has reached McCalls Ferry In Dru more two. Those men are under the con trol of the Pennsylvania Contra), and it is said that this company is surveying the route to ascertain the estimate cost of the work by one of its own engineers. The grading of the lower section of this road, extending from the mouth of the Octoraro to the town of Port Deposit, is being done as rapidly as possible, and by the end of August at least live miles of the road will be ready for use. Recently the new boardof supervisors of Fulton sold out the public roads of the township to contractors, who are obligated to keep them in repair, according to the provisions of the resent local law passed by the Legislature as applicable to that town ship. The citizens of Fulton determined to have better roads in future, and with this end in view, held township meetings, draft ed a law, incorporating into it the 'best features of the several local acts now In force in many of the townships of Chester county, got it passed by the Legislature, and then elected three of her responsible citizens to carry out the law. With our citizens this bon experiment which is to be tested. Wt, opine that It will work Well when fairly started. Ono thing Is certain that the new system cannot possibly bo worse than the old. •autiug bouscs. JOHN M. STICHNIAN, GEORGE .I.3HVB,ICER, JOHt.l.ll LLARKSoN, SAMUEL. Hl.Lizo.ss. M E/1/IA NUS' BANK. T " UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD CO OFFER A LIMITED AMOUNT OF THEIR FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS AT PAR, PAYABLE IN GOLD The Great Pacific Railroad Line, extending 1721 miles from Omaha, on the Missouri River, to the tide—waters of the Padilla Ocean, is being built by two powerful Companies—The Union Pacific, beginning at Omaha, building West, and the Central Pacific of California, begin ning at Sacramento, building:East, until the two totals shall meet, Both Companies havo prosecuted the work with great vigor, tho Union Pacific having al ready exponded over THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS, and the Central over 701 1 0 .Af lntone, upon their reapeetive parte of the thulertals hag— THE UNION PACIFIC HAVE COMPLETED 550 MlLES—have iron and other materials for two hundred mUee upon the ground, and one hundred additional miles are ready for the track. They will have a much larger force em• ployed this year than over before, and It is ex pected that between 800 ANI) 000 MILES will be In operation during 18118. There seems to be no reasonable doubt that the distance be. tweet/ Omaha and Sacramento will be travers ed by rail In 1870, THE GOVERNMENT GRANTS 12,800 acres of land, and its Bonds to the average amount of 828,800 per miles, to aid in the construction of the line, and authorizes the issue of the First Mortgage Bonds now offered for sale, to the same amount and no more. The Government takes a second lion, and gives to the First Mort gage Bondholders a prior lion for their secur ity, to which a largo paid-up capital is added. The Bonds cannot be issued except as each sec tion of twenty miles is accepted..by Govern ment commission, so that they always repre sent a real property. It is universally admitted that on the com pletion of the Union Pacific Railroad, Its through business will make It ono of the most profitable In the world—but its way or local business is already several times the interest on its bonds; so that, if not another mile were built, they would be a secure Investment. THE NET EA RNINGS for eight months of last year on an average of 380 mUes are offi cially reported at 81,06,130, while the inter est on all the bonds it could Issue on that length of road for that time, reduced to cur rency, was only $345.866. The amount paid by the Government for the transportation of troops, munitions, stores and malls has been, and doubtless will continue to be, much more than the interest on the United States Second Mortgagi Bonds. lilt is not, the charter provides that after the road Is complet ed, and until said bonds and interest are paid, at least five per cent. of the net earnings of the road shall be applied to such payment. The Union Pacific Bonds are for 81,300 each, and have coupons attached. They have thirty years to ruu, and bear annual interest, paya ble on the first day of January and July at the Company's Office in the City of New York, at the rate of six per cent. in gold. The Principal is payable in gold at maturity. At the present rate of gold, these bonds pay an annual income on their cost of ==l AND IT 18 BELIEVED THAT THEY WILL SOON BE AT A PREMIUM The Company have but a very limited supply of their Bonds remaining on hand, but any subscrlptlonsacceptect ton greater amount than can be tilled from Bonds, now in the Company's possession, will ba supplied from the New Bonds to be issued on that portion of the road completed in the Spring, in the order in which they are received. The Company reserve the right to advance the price of their bonds to a rate abovo par at any time, and will not Jill any orders or re ceive any subscriptions on which the money has been actually paid at the Company's office before the time of such advance. Parties subscribing will remit the par value of the bonds aMI the accrued interest in cur rency at the rate of six per cent, per annum, from the date on which the last coupon was paid. We are now build ing three hundred more of these complete Har vesters, and with confidence offer them to the public, feeling assured that their excellent points cannot fall to secure universal appro val. They have been tried in all sorts of grass and grain to the entire satisfaction of our nu merous customers. Their advantages are in the combination of a complete Mower, with a simple, efficient Self-raking Reaper, and form ing a simple, strong and handy machine, which two horses can draw with ease. For reliability In doing good work in tangled grain no other can compete with the Marsh- Self-Rake' and In this assertion we appeal to our six hundred customers in Lancaster county alone. We also refer to the official re port of the great national trial at Auburn, N. Y., of the Elelbßaklng Reapers, in which the Marsh-Self-Rake toot the highest mark. See page 41 and 42 of the second national trial of Mowers and Reapers, by the " New York State Agricultural Trial Society." The Valley Chief is a two-Wheeled machine, has a folding finger bar, side delivery, can be raised and lowered with ease while in motion, and is made prin cipally of steel and Iron. Ten Years' experience I n Be K lling Reaping and Mowing Machines enables me to offer you for the Harvest of 1888 the only two-wheeled Belf•Rake Reaping Machine that has proved successful in doing the work better in down tangled grain than can be done by hand. With this Machine, one man or boy, with a good steady pair of horses, can do as much work in a day, and dolt better, than two men can do with the best combined hand machine now in use. This has been our experience and that of many of our beat Farmers who have used them the last three seasons. Take off your Rake and Platform and you have one of the very beet Mowers in use; In cutting down tangled grain or grace with this Machine, you can drop your cutter bar as low as you may desire without stopping your team ; you can Roble or Lower it with all ease while it is In motion.
