FritsmErr.—On Wednesday afternoon a
delegation of the West Philadelphia Fire
Company, No. 42, of Philadelphia, arrived
in thls city, in charge of a frame and pho

Fire Company, consisting of twenty mem-

P. Ottey, John Johnson, Henry Fite, John
Eckert, and A. J.Galbraith. "Frank," the
fire:dog belonging to the Company is a self
constituted committee, having been twice
put off the train before leaving Philadel
phia, and accompanied the Committee on,
Presentation. They were escorted to their
headquarters, "The Cross-Keys Hotel," by
the Reception Committee of the "Big Six."
In the evening by appointment the mem
bers. of the Humane Fire Company and the
Committee of Presentation of the West
Philadelphia Fire Company met at Schou
renbralm's Saloon, West King street. At
8 o'clock all present marched into the large
room in rear of the bar, where a simper got
ten up by the Humane Boys was in waiting
for their guests, and were seated around
two large tables, well ladened with all that
a craving appetite might wish for.
Between the tables stood the Frame and
Photographs to be presented to the Hu
inane Fire Company from their Philadel.
phis brethren, which was decidedly the
most beautiful and costly present of the
kind we have ever seen. This magnificent
testimonial consisted of handsomely colored
photograph likenesses of the 54 members
of the West Philadelphia Company, who
participated in the Grand Firemen's Pa
rade in this city on the 17th of October, being
on that occasion the guests of the Humane,
adorned with an elegant and highly orna
mented
gilt frame, S feet high by 5 lest wide.
The top of the frame is surmounted with a
large gilt representation of the American
eagle, from whose talons floats a long gilt
scroll bearing the following inscription :
WEST PHILADELPHIA hose Ai S. E. E. CO.,
No. 42, TO HUMANE Ft RE Co., OP
LANCASTER, No. it.
Directly under the eagle Is a neatly exe
cuted model of a hose carriage, with all the
necessary fixings and apparatus pertaining
thereto. A vary handsome shield below
the carriage bears the motto: " WE PER
SEVERE To SAVE!" At the bottom of the
, frame is a perfect and pretty model of the
steamer belonging to the company, the
peculiarity of which is that it can be taken
apart, and lying under the engine is a sec
tion of suction hose to be attached to a plug
in front of the steamer. Midway on the
right and left sides of the frame are a
branch pipe, tire axe and trumpet crossed,
and very beautifully represented, together
with many Other lire emblems. This splen
did frame was manulitetured by Mr.
Andrew Galbraith, No. 332 South Third
street, Philadelphia, who deserves great
credit for the mechanism and skill displayed
by him, and the photographs are executed
in the highest and best style of the art by
Mr. T. W. Searby, and his assistant, Mr.
Harry Beale, Nos. 324 and 326 South street,
Philadelphia. The committee who super
intended the construction of the testimonial
were Messrs. Markward, Joseph Sloan, and
Assistant Engineer James F. Wilson, who
lire also deserving of much praise. In the
centre of the present is the liillowing reso
lution, generously executed in a very fine
specimen of penmanship by William Mc-
Devitt, of Philadelphia Fire Company, No.

At a meeting held this evening, of the
members that participated in the visit to
Lancaster on the 17th of October, the fol
lowing resolution was unanimously adopt
ed:
Resolved, That our heartfelt thanks are
duo and hereby tendered to the Humane
Fire Company, :No. G , of Lancaster, for
their generous hospitality extended to us
on our recent visit, and that there be a
committee of three appointed to have pre

and regard.
EtlwAim LYsTER, President
Jr»! N E. Itmutorr,tieeretary.
WILLIAM U. MARE WA Itl/,
JAMES L. WILSON,
JosErn
Another peculiarity in this testimonial is,
that immediately surrounding the oval
containing the resolution of thanks, are
eight photographs, the upper three of which
are Col. Loystor, the President of the Com
pany and Chief Marshal on the day of pa
rude, with his two assistants IM that occa
sion, Messrs. Blankley and Freas ; the
three lower ones are those of the committee
who got up the testimonial, while the two
on the sides are those or Messrs. Bransbury
and Crout, each of whom lost an arm in the
late war. Mr. B. on the left side lost his
left arm. and Mr. C. on-the right side lost
his right arnt.
After all had partaken of the supper set
before them, the presentation took place.
George Brubaker, Esq., President of the
Humane Fire Company, presided at t:he
right end of the first table, .with Mayor
Sanderson at the left end, and Mr. George
Wehrly at the right end of the second table.
The President of the West Philadelphia
Eire Company, Col. Edward Lyster, who
sat on the right of Mr. Brubaker, arose and
presented the frameand photographs in the
tbllowing brie( address:

This Committee has been selected by the
West Philadelphitt Ifose and Steam - Fire
Engine toinpuny for the purpose of placing
in your Hall a suitable token of our esteem
for pot all, and of our gratitude for your
kindness and abundant, hospitality. We
came among you last October, as strangers
to many of you. Your brotherly attention
made us all feel that we left you as old-time
friends. We never cease telling our friends
and dear ones at home, the story of the
happy days spent milting the hospitable
people of old Lancaster. We bring this
frame, enclosing the counterfeit resem
blances ofyour fifty-four guests, askingyou
to receive it, from no intrinsic value which
it may have, but as a lusting memorial of
the brotherly love and manly friendship
which shall ever be maintained between
our companies. Thu bachelors among us
request the to express the modest wish that
they may not be entirely forgotten by the
fair lady friends of the Humane, and that
this memorial may help some of them to
think occasittnally of the poor fellows who
are now Withffilt. 1101,0.
We thank you again. We had heard how
high was your position in Lancaster its a
company and as citizens. Our visit doubly
confirmed the report. We would say, (toil
speed you in the perlormance of your noble
duties as firemen. Your continued pros
perity and happiness will gladden our
hearts, and whenever any of you may visit
our beautiful home, we will endeavor to
equal your kindness and hospitality. My
pleasant duty is done in handing to you
thts emblematic frame.
Gee. Brubaker, Esq., -President of the
Humane Fire Company, received the testi
monial with the following remarks:
Mr. Preßident, and Gentlemen of the West
Philadelphia J'irc Lbmpany :
I urn glad to see you in our city again;
glad to be able on the part of the Humane
Fire Company of old Lancaster to welcome
you as their guests.
Although this occasion is not important
in the annals or the Fire Department, vet
to us it marks the continuance of good feel
ings, kind fellowship and friend ly gratitude,
begun at a time when our wattle people
were endeavoring to receive you with all
the kindness and hospitality in their Dower.
'Phis beautiltd and costly testimonial of
your regard for us and our ellbrts tn prop
erly entertain you, coming as it does en
tirely unsolicited, 0101 vomited 101 th the
complimentary terms you have been
pleased to award us, Will belong preserved
and cherished as commemorating an era in
our history•. Our own ITlPMbers are plain,
honest and straightforward, desirous to 1,,
what Is right, and to be In every act and
deed representatives of good, reliable, man
ly firemen ; and when the opportunity was
afforded them to receive the West Philadel
phia firemen with others of their class,
they endeavored to treat you with that re
spect, courtesy and attention all firemen
should extend to each other; and this beau
tiful and magnificent frame enclosing the
pictures of every member who favored the
- Humane with his presence on that memora
ble occasion, known as the Firemen's pa
rade in the city of Lancaster, shows that
our efforts were more than appreciated.
Each picture will have its own history, to
recall in alter times, when years (Cain /MVO
gone by and 1.111. !Walk of the actors in these
scenes will have been silvered over with
the frosts of age, many rentiniseonces of
pleasant times spent together, of lasting
friendships formed, of laughable adven
tures—all to be remembered with satisfac
tion and recalled with pride.
Permit me again to welcome vou here,
without further remarks, and extend to
you a true, hearty greeting to our midst.
On behalf of the lady friends of the Hu
mane Fife Company. Mr. S. A. Wylie, Etli•
tor of the Lancaster Inquirer, presented to
the Committee a very large pound cake,
beautifully decorated, on the top of which
was an Ivory-type picture of M r. Brubaker,
President of the Humane, surrounded In
the teeing with the words "Moor Friends"
and a large figure "0." Mr. Wylie in pre.
Renting the cake spoke briefly and humor
ously, saying that the giving and receiving
of pictures were always very acceptable
presents, and wero especially so in the days
when he was u bachelor and visited the
ladies, that although they had not as many
likenesses to give in return for the number
they were about to receive, they were de
termined to present one—that of their
President—with this nice cake as a owed
token of their regards, for they could eat
alt around him and undermine hint, but
would have his likeness left as a memento
of this occasion. Mr. Wm. H. Markward
responded briefly end appropriately, ac
cepting the cake and returning the thanks
of the Company for the same, in conclusion
saying "they were bound to eat it too."
• Mr. Markward then presented to the Hu
mane Fire Company two smaller pictures
with oval gilt frames to hang on the right
and left aides of the large frame and photo
graphs. The one to be placed on the right
side was a photograph likeness of Terrence
MeOneker, the new Chief Engineer of the

less timely and appropriate remarks of my
young friend from the Union Fire Com
pany, who was selected by the Ladies con
nected with the Humane to present the ele
gant cake to their Philadelphia friends, I
scarcely know what to say—the ground
having been so thoroughly occupied by
those distinguished:gentlemen. Still, as an
unworthy member df the Humane, I would
be derelict in duty if I did not essay to add
something to what has been so well said on
this interesting occasion.
Gentlemen of the West Philadelphia Hose
Company, the magnificent token of your
good will which your worthy President has
presented in such kind and nattering terms
is received and will be kept as a cherished
memento of that friendship which was so
auspiciously formed, when you were the
guests of the Humane, on the 17th of Octo
ber last, and which has now so happily cul
minated in this pleasant re-union of the two
organizations. The frame and the photo
graphs which embellish it, constitute one of
the finest specimens of artistic skill I have
ever seen, and reflects the highest credit on
the gentlemen who executed it. The same
remarks apply to these smaller frames and
the pictures they contain, so well presented
by Mr. Markward. They are also of the
highest style of art, and are also received
with the same emotions of gratitude which
we feel for the larger one.
Gentlemen: The Fire Department of
Philadelphia has a reputation for efficiency
co-extensive with the Union itself. Indeed,
I may say, its celebrity is world-wide.—
And, although on a much smaller scale,
permit me to say, that in no city of the size
of Lancaster is there to be found a more
active and efficient body of firemen than
we can boast of here; and second to no
other organization In our midst is the Hu
mane Engine and Hose Company, No. 0.
The lire department of this city, like their
brethren of Philadelphia, are always ready
and willing to respond to the call of duty,
and assist in saving the lives and property
of their fellow-citizens; and in doing tins
they cheerfully encounter every hardship,
and are afraid of no exposure.
Gentlemen of the \Vest Philadelphia
Hose: Upon the occasion of your visit to
our city on the 17th of October last, the Hu
mane, whose guests you were, endeavored
to entertain you in the best possible Mull
nor they could, so as to make your stay
pleasant and agreeable. The Company is
mainly composed of workingmen and me
chanics, none of whom are blessed with an
abundance of this world's goods, being less
highly favored in this respect than most of
the other companies in our town—conse
quently the entertainment we furnished
you was necessarily plain and unpretend
ing. But we did the best we could, and the
evidence that you appreciated our humble
efforts is now before us in these magnifi
cent presents. We shall cherish them, as
tokens of friendship, in our heart of hearts,
They shall remain a fixture there, and will
be transmitted us an heir-loom to those
who shall take our places In the Company
when we have descended to the tomb.
And now, fellow Firemen of Philadelphia
and Lancaster, allow me to say that these
re-unions, which have becomesonnewhat of
an institution amongst us, are worthy Mail
commendation. They serve to keep up that
friendly and generous feeling and that
spirit of emulation to excel, which should
always exist between brethren engaged in
the same laudable efforts for the good of
their fellow-men; and I trust the present
visit of our friends will be mutually pleasant
and agreeable to both organizations, and
that nothing will occur to mar the harmony,
or detract front the pleasure which now
prevails at this festive board.
Gentlemen of the West Philadelphia
Hose : On behalf of the Humane Company,
-I again return you their sincere and grate
ful thanks for the valuable and costly
presents you have made us, and hope that
the friendship thus so happily begun be
tween the two companies may be lasting
as time itself. I have done.
Mr. Markward was then walled on Mr a
song, when he complied with the request
by singing a sentimental sung, and the
comic Irish song—" Terrence O'Rourke,"
both of which he sang well, and afterwards
recited an Irish letter connected therewith.
The members of both Companies then
formed in line and proceeded to Fulton
Hall, where the festivities of the evening
wound up in' complimentary hop, extend
ed to the wee sma' hours of the morning.
The party was a very agreeable one, and
everything passed off pleasantly. The Phil
adelphia firemen express themselves as
highly delighted with the hospitality and
kindness extended to them by their Lan
caster friends. Wednesdiiv evening, the 15th
of J anuary, 186 S—will be another of the
memorable events in the history of the West
Philadelphia and Humane Fire Companies,
an occasion never to be Ibrgotten, but to be
cherished for all time' to come ils the
strengthening and binding ‘ link in the chain
of harmony, love and friendship established
between them.

NO MORE CHANCE TO ADULTERATE
HISEILERB HERB BITTERS WILL BE
SOLD, ON AND AFTER DEC IS,
SOLELY IN GLASS.
IT CAN BE PROCU RED OF ALL DRUGGISTS.
In making the above change, and discontinu
ing entirely the sale of let's Herb Bitters
In bulk, the proprietors deem that the people
should be informed of the causes which have
called forth such action on their part.
In the first place, we hold that Kishler's Herb
Bitters is not a beverage, was never intended
to be used as a beverage, but that it fa a medi.
clnal preparation of various herbs, com
pounded upon scientific principles, and in
exact accordance with the formulafof the phar
macopia in the preparation of tinctures, dec.
In fact, that It really is a compound tincture of
Cedron and other herbs, and, as far as possible
removed, and differing from the many so-called
Tonics, Bitters, Cordials, Stomachlca, which,
for the moat part, are nothing but so many
disguises assumed by whiskey, and are for the
most part composed of a major portion of the
very vilest quality of that article, flavored
with some strong drugs to destroy the nausea
of the same, in order to tickle the palate, min
ister to a depraved taste, and afford a plausible
excuse for persons to drink whiskey under a
different name. •
Insider's Herb Bitters has been sold lu bulk,
In this particular It has been unfortunate, for
t has thus been placed directly in contact with
tne above mentioned, and although its hi
trlnsic merit, and sterling worth has enabled
it to sustain its high character, yet the people
have naturally a cortairadistrust of the article
when it is found to be classed in the same cate
gory with a number of whiskey preparations,
bar drinks, and beverages.
Tills is one great disadvantage against which
Insider's Herb Bitters has to contend, but
there is still another. The demand for IL has
caused many unprincipled persons, who are
not content with the profit derived In a legiti
mate manner from its sale, TO INCREASE
THEIR GAINS BY' ADULTERATION. They
will purchase, perhaps, a barrel, and by the ad
mixture of cheap whiskey and water, increase
the quantity, making perhaps, two, or it may
be three barrels of the couutel felt, from a
single barrel of the genuine, thus abusing the
confidence of their customers, impairing their
health, and it is likely, iu many instances, in
tlicting serious Injury thereby, besides doing
Injustice to the proprietors and damaging the
reputation of the article.
Tills is the most serious objection, but there
is still another. Our desire is to hare this Prep
aration for sale on the shelves of every drug
gist, alai country store dealer, thus placing it
within easy access of all chases and every sec
tion of the country. If the Bitters are sold in
bulk, It is retailed principally at hotels, restau
rants and taverns, so that drugglits and mer
chants eau not safely and profitably sell it to
their customers. AL the hotels the Bitters is
oftimes learmily adulterated; while when sold
la bottles, it is Impossible to tam p er with the
medicine without fear of detection. la hotels
it must be Cold as a beverage; which is not the
object of its manufacture—while as a medicine,
securely sealed in a proper sized bottle, the
Bitters can be retailed from tae counter of
every druggist and merchant in the country,
MISIILER'S HERS BITTERS ARE NOW
SULU ONLY IN BOTTLES.
Let this fact be remembered by the public
who may consider all other preparations sold
In bull:and under Its lame, as lase and worth
less counterfeits.

Dr..l'. B. Earboon & Co.—Gentlemen ,
feel
impelled to write you a line in grateful ac
knowledgment 01 the greatservice done me by
Mishler's Herb Bitters, of which I learn you
have lately become proprietors. I have been
suffering terribly Iron, Dyspepsia for three
years past. Nothing that I ate sat eed with me.
I had constant gnawing and pamiul sensations
in my stomach, and waisted away, almost to a
skeleton. Even my mind was affected to some
extent, and I stiffs, ed (rota loss of memory. I
had tried various physicians, and spent more
than live hundred dollars endeavoring to ob
tain relief. I had about given up in despair 01
ever being better, when a friend who had ex•
perleuced great benefit in ewe of Dyspepsia
trom the use of MISEILEK'S HERII 13ITTS.R.S
induced me to try it. After tuning tour bottles
I can say lam well, having gained about tlf I een

Ibis to you in grateful acknowledgment; and
I would take this opportunity of commending
your medicine to all who may be afflicted In a
similar way, or who may have Dyspepsia in

MR. R. Misinf.En—Dear dir: You remem er
some four weeks ago I complained to you that
I could not eat fresh bread nor tried potatoes
for supper; that they would not digest; in

time. You remarked to me that I should take
your Bitters—a good drink alter each meal—
amt It I should not be well by the note I bad

them, and, to my astonishment, In the course
of a few days I could eat anything, and as lunch
