itaittflll • - Lola Montez. 49ketched to smiles rind Shadows BY GRACE GREEN WOOL) Ispent the winter of IS5d in lirash ington. It was rather a dull season po litically. The atmosphere about the Capital was sullen and 1,1 -ten taus. Dis agreeable wrangles, that led to nothing but inteuser in-feelmg, were the order of each day. After unsatistitetory morn ings., spent in watching Congressional proceedings, which were neither amuse ing nor edifying, we turned with more than the usual zest to musical and dra matic entertainments. Among the lat ter, perhaps, might be included the somewhat profuse and deluding honors paid to li.osbuth. - Charlotte Cushman played a long en gagement at the National Theatre that season, filling the stage with the grand sweep and regal al ti twin of her genii' , —charming in social life with rare wit and culture—with the v,.,,n,, , ..ii:.. ii ..11, of her nature and the gent:.l • mild:city of her manners—all ol •• ,ii,...1 ~,,,dv.4 c il some tempest of tragic pov, r . r.A. , .! ,tiii - shine, rainbows anti s , d I an-•, i•• 4.-r it tropical tornado. Few wishedt to see her more thanonce,—she flitted from city to city, doing some very generous things, let it be remembered of her--showing es pecial kindness towards children, who were '-in sighing, like him ,of , ,Macedon, flor a new world' tb : OOtiolner,' .flitted to California, where she saw, life under a thousand and neW , :iaSpectS, each one wilder than the brat' - Slit flung her self, with reckless abandon, with what seerned, pure Irish deviltry, into that rough, adventurous life, unsubdued, unterrified, incorrigible, under some very hard experiences. Strange stories of her eccentricities, her crazy freaks, her desperate, 'daring ways, came to us and made us laugh, yet shudder while we laughed. She tamed bears, rode ca caroller , gambled, shot at and horsewhipped her enemies, flung about her money, and married right and left. She seemed to have a mania for marry ing and being divorced, for falling in love and fighting her way out—poor mad little sinner! At length, broken in health if not in spirit, she returned to the Atlantic Mates, and began a new career, as a lec turer. Her lectures were flimsy, patch ed up affairs, and of questionable moral tone. They were probably not written a:tot:ether by herself—yet I should say she could have produced something bet ter, if less ambitious, had she given naturally and simply, recollections of the strange countries and peoples she I Though not a well educated uman, her conversation was said to be insularly sparkling and racy. Yet the 11:1-„ii and sweep of her magnificent eyes and tie bewitching fall of her lustrous dark hair went far with the general au lillllo2 to make up for the lack of wit and wisdom in her words. Thoui t h apparently the most respect able, th.s period was perhaps the most plti,;l:ie of her life. The tool of un ineipled men, she had entered on a work for which she was even less fitted t for the profession of the dancer, ami in which she depended more di ref•tly for success on her unenviable ri ;ode.
