aB “Egypt," an honest countryman,
who had lived some forty years or
thereabout In blissful lgnoranoeofevery-
thing pertaining to the “kers," was ap
polnted station-agent at C— t i
thosellttleout-of-the-way places, where,
as Elokens says, “no one could by any
possibility want to get off or on," Oh
receiving ■ his Instructions, he was told
among other things, that, as C— 7- was
merely a “flag station," trains would
stop only when some one wished to get
off or on ; and that If ho wanted to stop
any train, he must "flag" It.
Shortly after his appointment, ncord
ingly os the “ mall” came thundering
on, he placed the magic red flagln posi
tion, the signal to stop. As the car
drew up to the station, the conductor
Jumped off on the platform, with his
accustomed “ All aboard I” at the same
time asking,—
" Any passengers to got on?"
“ Wu'al, not as I knows of," was the
puzzled agent's reply.
" Then what do you stop the train
for?" shouted the Irritated conductor.
\ "I dld'nt know but some un might
wand to qel off" Bald the obliging
"agent” In a conscious tone of Injured
Innocence.
The Irishman mid Ills Three Wives.
"And you have been married, Patrick,
three times, haven’t you?,'
"Yes' lndade, sir.”
" And what do you say of it? which
wife did you like the best
"Well, Becky O’Brlue, that 1 married
the first time was a good woman— loo
good for me ; so she got sick uml died,
and the Lord took her,
“Then I got married to Bridget Plan
nlgan. She was a bad woman ; and she
got sick and died too, and the devil took
her. Then—fool that 1 wuh— l got mar
ried to Margaret Haggerty. She was
worse Imd, very bad—so bad that neith
er tile Lord nor the devil would have
her, so I have to keep her myself."
How True
What plowing, digging, and harrow
ing Is to land, thinking, reflecting, and
examining is to the mind. Each has
its proper culture ; and as the land that
is suffered to lie waste and wild for a
long time will be overspread with brush
wood, brambles, thorns and vegetation,
which would have neither use nor
heauly, so there will sprout lip ill a neg
lected, uncultivated mind n great num
bin' of prejudices ami opinions, which
owe their oiigin partly to the soil itself,
the passions and imperfections of the
mind of man and partly to those seeds
which ' chance to he scattered in it by
every kiutl of doctrine which the cun
ning of statesman, the singularity of
pedants; and the superstition of fools
shall raise.
Beautiful Extract.
Wheii the summer of youth is slowly
wasting away into the nightfall of age,
and the shadows of the past years grow
deeper, anil life wears to its elose, it is
pleasant to look back through the vista
of time upon the felicities of our earlier
years. Jf we have a home to shelter, and
hearts to rejoice with us, and friends
have gathered together around our fire
sides, then Hie rougli place of our way
faring will have been worn and smoothed
in tile twilight of life, while tho many
spots we have passed through, will grow
brighter and more beautiful. Happy
indeed are they whose intercourse with
the world has not changed the tone of
holler feelings, or broken those musical
chords of the heart, whose vibrations
are so melodious, so tender and touching
in that evening of age.
“ Bob, that iu a fine* horse you have
thero ; how much is lie worth ? M
Three hundred and fifty dollars.”
“ No, not so much us that!”
“Yes, every cent of it and another
fifty on top of it.”
“ Are you sure ?”
11 Yes, I’ll swear to it.”
“All right.”
“What are you so d—d inquisitive
for?”
“ Merely for assessing purposes. I
am tiro assessor of this ward, and only
wanted to know what you rated your
nag at.”
A few dayssiuee, a gentleman call
ed upon some lady friends, and was
shown into the parlor by a servant girl.
She asked him whnt name she should
announce, and he, wishing to take them
by surprise, replied:
“ Amicuß” (a friend).
Thegirl seetned atfirstalittle puzzled,
but quickly regained her composure,
and in the blandest manner possible,
observed—
“ What kind of a cuss did you say,
The visitor was embarrassed for a
moment, but recovering, handed her his
card, and vowed never again to use
Latin to a servant girl.
—“"You would not tak erne for twenty?”
said a nice girl to her partner while
dancing a few evenings ago: “what
would you take me for ?” “ For better,
or for worse,” replied he.

Although not disposed to favor or recom
mend Patent Medicines In general, through
distrust of their Ingredients and ettecT-, I yui
know of no suifielent reasons way a man may
not testify to the b- neflts he believes himself to
have received from any simple preparation, In
the hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others. :
I do this the more readily In regard to Hoof
land’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M
Jackson, oi this city, because I wosprejudlced
against them for many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly an alcoholic
mixture. I am Indebted to my friend, Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this preju
dice by proper tests and for encouragement to
try them wnen snli'erlng from great and long
continued debility. The use of three bottles or
these Bitters at the beginning of the present
year, was followed by evident reUef and restor
ation to a degree or bodily and mental vl"0r
which I hadnot feltror six months before, and
had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore
thank God and my friend directing me to the
use of them. J. NEWTON BROWN j
