    Temper In Treating Stock.
The farmer’s stock around him par-g
takes niore or less of the quality of the
owner or those who attend updn-it. A,
man’s influence is imparted to his beasts,
particularly the horses, the working
cattle, and the milch cows. A man of
irascible temper gets up nervousness in
a 'horse Or a cow. The brute be
comes afraid of him; and if of a
viscious nature, is apt to be hurtful,
spitefully influenced, perhaps irreclaim
ably spoiled—whereas a mild-tempered,
discriminative man will gradually
smooth down the asperities of a harsh
disposition. We have known milch
cows, wild as deer, brought to a placid
tractability. The man is a superior—
and his superior influence will be com
municated. W ise stock-men keep fools
and irritants out of their stock-yards.
Cure of Store llogs in Winter.
Store hogs, especially shoats, really
ought to havewarmanddry apartments
during cold weather. Their thin cover
ing of hair.affordsthem butlittleprotec
tion; hence, theimportanceofwarm pig
sties’, well littered with dry straw and so
tight thatcold winds will not blow direct
ly on them. It|is far more economical to
keep tlieanimals warm in asuug andwell
ventilated piggery than by extra feed, and
this will promote faster growth, if they
are kept comfortably warm by a good
building. When a piggery is spacious,
with one end open to the weather
that winds make their sleeping place
uncomfortably cold, a portion should]
be partitioned off with hoards
the edges well jointed, and a nartqjv
entrance made at the point least ex
posed. Then.nail a board (i or 8 inches
high across the bottom of the entrance
the straw from being worked
. a liberal supply
Nvltys be provided. t
Selecting Milch Cows,
A correspondent of the X. 'i ■ !' ar '
mer’s Club says that Col. Woodman, in
the State of Maine, for aho.ut forty years .
has kept a dairy, anil generally reared
liis own cows. He has always tound, in
bis experience, that if i .heifer’s lirst
ealf was a male she neve ' proved to be
much of a milker—indee i, that she, in
subsequent years, never v e more milk
than on her.first calving, hut if her first
product was a heifer she/was sure to
represent all the milking qualities of a
valuable mother. He did not know liov
this might be in others’ experience, but
,in forty years of-his own lie laid know n
of no exception to the n/le above indi
cated. Coming from a man so trust
worthy in every respect as I know him
to he, I thought I should like to submit
it for the consideration of other farmers
aud stock breeders.
The Influence of .Newspapers.
Occasionally an individual says to.us,
“ times are so hard with me, 1 must slop
my paper,” or as in some instance,
wife thinks we can dispense with the
paper now, and I must stop.” 1 bus it
is, stop the paper the first thing as a
useless expense, wUhout thinking of
the actual waste of money for many
tilings drank, eat, smoked or chewed,
which can do' the system no good, hut
rather harm.
The newspaper can, or should, lie re-
giuKfed as a benefit to every household i
it imparts useful information ; it iur
' inishes subjects for thought and conver
/ ' nation ; it adds a»chann to social inter
im-course ; it ufakes agreeable members oi
'society. Tube without a newspaper one
might as Wall be out of the world; lie
becomes a perfect nobody ; when lie goes
■into society and hears others talk about
Turrefit events and discusss questions ol
local or general interest, be can take no
part in these things because lie is not
posted up, I not having read the
papers. And in the family cir
' cle -what an influence the paper
lias —the children read it gain
knowledge ; it serves to occupy their
leisure hours, to keep them from frivo
lous amusements, and gives an attrac
tion to home. Surely, then, no wise
parent would consent to go without a
newspaper ill liis family—and a local
home neNVspaper too. He may think
lie can get along without it, be
cause lie is out in the world, and
can have the reading of the paper
from liis neighbors’ shop or store
or can leant what is going on from
i others. But this is rather a mean way.
Men be independent. They
ought to read for theqisetves. ■ If, how
ever, they think they do not need the
' paper themselves, they may rest assured
■their families do. Considerations like
these should have their weight, ami
should induce those who have had
thoughts of stopping their newspapers
not to do so, and for those who have
not taken a paper to subscribe at once
for one.

From Rev. W. D. Seigfriud, Pastor of Twelfth
Baptist Church, Philadelphia. \
Gentlemen:—l have recently been laboring
under the distressing eilee&of indlgestiou, ac
companied by u prostration of the nervous sys
tem. Numerous remedies were recommended
by friends, anil some of them tested, but with
out relief. Your Hootland’s German Bitters
were recommended by persons who lmd tried
them, and whose favorable mention of these
Bitters induced me to try them. I must con
fess that I nud an aversion to Pateut Medicines
from the "thousand and one” quack "Hit
lers,” whose only awn seems to be to palm ofi’
sweetened and drugged liquor upou tha com*
mumity in a sly way, and the tendency of
’which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed
drunkard. Upon learning that yours was
really a medicinal preparation I took it with
happy eflect. Its action, not only upou the
stomach, but upon the nervous systom, was
prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have de
rived great and permanent beuefit from the
useof a lew’ bottles.
From the Rev. E. D. Kendall, Assistant Ed'tor
Christian Chronicle, Philadelphia.
I have derived decided benefit from the use
German Litters, and xeel it iny
privilege to recommend them as 1i most valua
ble tonic, to all who are suffering grom gen
eral debility or from diseases arising from de
rangement of the liver.
Yours truly,
8 E. D. KENDALL.
From Rev. I>. Merrlge, Pastor of the I’assyuuk
Baptist Church, Philadelphia.
From the many respectable recommenda
tions given to Dr. Hoollaud’a German liltters,
I was induced to give them a irla.. After
using several bottles I found them to be a good
remedy for debility, and a most excellent tonic
for the stomach.
From Rev. Wm. Smith, formerly Pastor of the
Vlncenttown and le tN. J.) Baptist
Churches.
Having used in my family a number of bot
tles of your Hootland's German Bitters, J have
to say that I regard them as an excellent med
icine,.apeclully adapted to remove the dl-eases
thewLre recommended for. They strengthen
aud invigorate the system wheti debilitated,
*nd are useful in disorders of the liver, loss of
app- tite, <£c. I have also recommended them
to several or my friends, who have tried them,
and found them greatly beneficial iu the resto

From the Rev. ‘Levi G. Beck, Pastor of the
Baptist Church. Pemberton, N. J., formerly of
the North Baptist Church, Philadelphia, at pre
sent Pastor of the Baptist Church, Chester, Pa.
I have known Hootland's German Bitters
favorably iSr a number of years' I have used
them in my own family, and have beep so
pleased with th< ir effects, that I was imldeed
to recommend them to many others, and know
that they have operated in astrlkingly benefi
cial manner. I take great pleasure In thus
.publicly proclaiming fails fact, and calling the
attention of those afflicted with the diseases for
which they are recommended, to these Bitters,
knowing from experience that m> recommen
dation wili be sustained. Ido this more cheer
full as Hootland's Bittbrs Is intended to benefit
the attllcled, and is “ not a rum drink.”
Yours, truly.

the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge and

Although not disposed to tavor or recom
mend Patent Medicines In general, through
distrust of their Ingredients and effects, I yet
know of no aulfieient reasons why a man may
not testify to the benefits he believes himself to
have received from any simple preparation, in
the hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
laud’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, oi this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly an njcoholic
mixture. I am indebted to my friend] Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of tins preju
dice by proper tests and for encouragement i o
try them when suffering from great and long
continued debility. The use of three bottles of
these Bitters at the beginning oi the present
year, waa followed by evident relief and restor
ation to a degree of bodily and mental vigor
which I had not feit for six months before, and
had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore
thank God anu my friend directing me to the
use of them. J. NEWTCN BROWN,
