the House of Representatives.
Another Hiird:Hft at " Old Thad."
Our representative seems to be catch
ing it all round; and strange to say the
hardest licks he is getting come from
his party friends. The Pittsburg Corn
,
nzereica of yesterday 'says :
The - action of the Senate and House
of. RepreSentatives clearly indicates
that Mr. Sumner and Mr. Stevens are
in .a small .minority. The indications
point to the admission of the Tennessee
members without a great deal of
delay. The unanimity with which Mr.
Stevens's caucus resolution has been
shorn of its objectionable features is in
the highest degree promising. -
What the Rebellion has Cost the South.
The Confederate muster-rolls show
that the State of Alabama sent into the
field one hundred and twenty-eight
thousand men, and that thirty-four
thousand lost their lives. Itis probable
that .a much greater number were per
manently disabled. Those who escaped
with life and limb have lost the greater
part of their property. Such figures as
are presented above show how terrible
was the struggle on the part of those
who strove to separate themselves from
the loyal part of the Union, and may
enable us to appreciate the determina
tion of the men who had to be overpow
ered before the Federal authority could
be restablished in the South.
THE Fortress Monroe correspondent
of the N. Y. Herald says Jefferson Davis
still enjoys good health, has daily walks
on the parapet, comfortable apartments,
a genteel wardrobe, " the best the mar
ket affords" in the provision line and
plenty of reading matter. He thought
the President's message was in generaL
a wise and good document, but was dis
appointed that it was not more specfic
in relation to the ultimate disposition
which is to be made of himself.
The Constitutional. Amendment in Ken
LOUISVILLE, Dec. 14.—1 n the Ken
tucky House of Representatives, Air.
Young offered a resolution, which wa.-
ordered to be printed and referred tonic
Committee on Federal Relations, " That
this Assembly heartily , approves the a , :
tion of the last General Assembly in
rejecting , the proposed amendment of
the Constitution of the United Stati,
and believe that vote to be a finality,
and that this Assembly has no right or
authority to consider or vote upon this
measure until it shall he again passeil ~;
proposed by Congress."
Tae Rev. Dr. Boynton, the successful
candidate, who received the undivid-it
vote of the New England delegation k
a Congregational clergyman of great
eloquence and repute.
The above In from the Washington
correspondent of the Boston Courii,•.
It is another illustration of the sectarian
bigotry of New England, when all' it ,
members unite upon a clergyman repre
senting the peculiar religious theorie , c,f
that section. Other sections of the coon -
try voted for chaplain upon per , ()nal
considerations; but New England lo.k -

JAMES GUTIIRIE, as President of the
Louisville and Nashville Railroad, i,.
credited with a smart thing whereby
road made two hundred thousand d,d
lars out of the war. The State of Ten
nessee had loaned its bonds for $500,001,
to aid in the construction of the road,
which was to pay interest semi-annual
ly to the fiscal agent of the State—the
Bank of Tennessee. When the hank
ran off into Dixie it was, of course, im
possible to pay, and as holders gut nn
dividends, the value of the bonds de
preciated. Guthrie quietly bought them
all up for the road, and the State has
just received them at par, thereby can
celing the debt.
A new legal question growing out of
the emancipation of the negroes, has
been raised in South Carolina. It is
whether debts incurred for slaves pur
chased before the proclamation took
ci
fect are now collectable. Many of the
people of the Palmetto State are deeply
interested in this matter, being still in
arrears on old purchases from the Vir
ginia slave dealers. The subject has been
brought to the attention of the Legi, ite
ture, which it is expected will maize
provision for "Partially discharging the
creditors' claims.
Gov. CURTIN stopped at Chradeston
on his way to Cuba, where he was re•
ceived with salutes and other honors by
the army and navy. Our Governor
being oneof the vainest men now living,
we have no doubt he enjoyed the thing
exceedingly.

SHOCKING ACCIDENTS.
MANY KILLED AND A LARGE NTIMBER
WO !TNDED
Over two hundred accidents from kicking
and running away of hol ses occurred during
the past year, In Lancaster county alone—
nearly all of which resulted in injuring the
drivers, killing some, maiming and wounding
others, and in most cases, breaking costly car
riages and hurting the hors s
Of the above, nine-tenths were tame family
horses. The Safety Bridle will put an end to
all such needless accilen IN. and with the Safety
Lines the speed of ever 7 horse is easily much
increas d.
At a special meeting of the Saddlers of Lan
caster county, Pa., held In LancaSter city, Nov.
27, 186.5, the following resolutions were unani
miously adop ed. •
RHEAS, The n•efultirss, power and safety
ofDr.lHartman's Safety Bridle and Lines have
been publicly demonstrated in the presence of
from one thousand to fit een hundred persons
•to their entire satisfaction ; and since it was
proven at the Dli lersvllle horse exhibition on
four of the most vicious and confirmed kickers
and runaways, that with the Safety Bridle and
Lines it is utterly impossible fur a horse either
to kick or run away; :therefore
Resolved, nod we, the Saddlers of Lancaster
county, Pa., believe that the Safety Bridle and
Lines accomplish all, and even more, tan is
claimed by the patentee, in preventing horses
from kicking and running away. 9
Resolved, That in view of the above facts, we
deem it our legitimate duty, both individu fly
and collectively, to exert all honorable means
to at once introduce the Bridle awl Lines, be
cause in doing so we in a very great measure
prevent all accidents wii Li horse, while with
the old and defective bri iis we put in great
Jeopardy both the and limb.
Resolved, That hereafter we manufacture no
other but Safety Bridles, utile s especially or
dered.
The price of individual Rights is $5 each ;
County Rights, from $lOO.OO to $500.00, according
to population—CM se containing .urge cities
excepted.
No other investment before the public pre
sents such inducements of making money. in
ever county there are at least twenty town
ships, and in each township at least oue hun
dred persons who drive hoses—which a five
dollars for an individual right will amount to
8500 per township, and ten thousand dol ars
($10,000) for each comity at the rate of twenty
townships at five hundred dollars each ! I;have
not the least doubt but that amount of money
can be made out of a county with proper bus—
ness tact and energy. The price of counties is
so small as to p.ace the investment in the
hands of every one, for few are so poor as to be
unable to raise one hundred do lays.
Another feature about this invention is that
the proprietor ol territory need not manufac
ture the bridles and lines, as the ordinary bridle
can be easily alt 'red into a Safety. The lines
only require to be made to order, and these can
be made by any saddler fdr a trifle more
than the ordinary lines. Hence, unlike other
patents, the right to use it only is sold
No man need wish fur a greater f r• nue than
right of a State. Tu show the confidence
the paten:ee has la his invention, he offers to
pay one thousand dollars for any horse that
can either kick or run away when under the
influence of the Safety Brid e and Lines. For
County and State rights address for circular,
and for Individual Rights, enclose V. 5 to S. B.

From Rev. W. D. Seigfried, Pastor of Twelfth
Baptist Church, Philadelphia.
Gentlemen :—I have recently been laboring
under the distressing effects of indigestion, ac
companied by a prostration of tile nervous sys
tem. Numerous remedies were recommended
by friends, and some of them tested, but with
out relief. Your Hoolland's German Bitters
were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of these
Bitters 'educed me to try them. I must, con
fess thatl nad an aversion to Patent Medicines
from the " thousand and one " quack "Bit
ters," whose only aim seems to be to palm off
sweetened and drugged liquor upon the com
munity in a sly' way, and the tendency of
which, I fear is to make many a confirmed
drunkard. L pon learning that yours was
really a medicinal preparation I took it with
happy effect. Its action, not only upon the
stomach, but upon the nervous system, was
prompt and gratifying. I feel that I have de
rived great and permanent benefit from the
use of a few bottles.
Very respectfully yours,
W. D. 13.EICIFRIED,

From the Rev. E. U. Fendall, ANsistant Editor
Christiort Chronicle, P~ihuielphia.
I. have derived decided benefit from the use
of Hoolland's German Bitters, and mei it my
privilege to recommend them as a most valua
ble tonic, to all who are suffering from gen
eral debility or from diseases arising from de
rangement of the liver.
Yours truly,
E. D. FENDALL.
From Rev. D. Merrige, Pastor of the Passyunk
Baptist Church, Philadelphia.
From the many respectable recommenda
tions given to Dr. Hoolland's German Bitters,
I was induced to give them a trial. After
using several bottles I found them to be agood
remedy for debility, and a most excellent tonic
for the stomach.
From Rev. Win. Smith, iormerly Pastor of the
Vineenttown and Milledle (N. J.) Baptist
Churches.
Having used In my family a number of bot
tles of your llooliand's German Bitters, I have
to say that I regard them EIS an excellent med
icine, specially adapted to remove the dheases
they are recommended for. They strengthen
and invigorate the system when debilitated,
and are useful In disorders of the liver, loss of
upp, tile, ..tc. I have also recommended them
to several of my friends, who have tried them,
and found them greatly beneficial In the resto
'ration of health.
- Yours truly

I have known Hoofiand's German Bitters
favorably for a number of years' I have used
them in my own family, and have been so
pleased with thrir effects, that I was induced
to recommend them to many others, and know
that they have operated in a strikingly benefi
cial manner. I take great pleasure in thus
publicly proclaiming this fact, and calling the
attention of those afflicted with the diseases for
which they are recommended, to these Bitters,
knowing from experience that my recommen
dation will be sustained. Ido this more cheer
frill as lloofiand's Bitters is intended to benefit
the afflicted, and is " not a rum drink."
Yours, truly
LEVI G. BECK.

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge and
Christian Chronicle, Philadelpid • .
Although not disposed to favor or recom
mend Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust of their ingredients and effects, I yet
know of no sufficient reasons why a man may
not testify to the benefits he believes himself to
have received from any simple preparation, la
the hope that he may thus contribute to the
benefit of others.
I do this the more readily t?, regard to Hoof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, ot this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for many years, under the im
pression that they were chiefly ; an a'coholic
mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert
Shoemaker, Esq., forthe removal of this preju
dice by proper tests and for encouragement t o
try them when suffering from great and long
coo tinued debility. The use of three bottles of
these Bitters at the beginning of the present
year, was followed by evident relief and restor
ation to a degree of bodily and mental vigor
which ,I had not felt for six months before, and
had alinost despaired of regaining. I therefore
thank God and my friend directing me to the
use of them. J. NEWTON BROWN

From the Rev. Thos. Winter, D. D., Pastor of
Roxborough Baptist Church..
Dear Sir : I feel it due to your excellent prep
aration, Roottand's German Bitters, to add
my testimony to the deserved reputation it has
obtained. I have for years, at times, been
troubled with great disorder in my head and
nervous system. I was advised by a friend to
try a bottle of your German Bitters. I did so,
and have experienced great and unexpected
relief; my health has been very materially
benefitted. I ccinfiden ly recommend the arti
cle where I meet with cases similar to my own,
and have been assured by many of their good
effects. Respectfully yours,
T. WINTER, Roxborough, Pa.
