..-:' ~ Rapitielfs - .Love
Wheirßaphael was painting his beau
tifuifreii.icitslu - the Farnesian Palace at
Rome;lnip*sed daily over a bridge and
throUgh: s narrow street to his work.
Orie day, — ibis salA r he saw a - beautiful
black-haired girl of the voluptuous type
that painters love so well; bathing her
white feet in 'the waters of the Tiber.
From that hour-all peace of mind for
sook him, and he forgot even art in, his
earnest desire to be loved by so exqui
site a-creature The ,baker's daughter,
however, was already provided in the
way of a lover, a certain fierce soldier
stained by the blood of many battles, as
piring to the possession of this peerless
beauty. Egidio, for this was his name,
had no refinement of the soul, no " in
tellect of soul," only the outward charms
of the girl had- touched him ; but he
swore that if any one else presumed to
think of or approach her, he would fin
ish him:with his stiletto.
Catterinella, never having known the
delicious frenzy of love, had hitherto
submitted with a tolerable grace, arising
from perfect indifference, to the ad
vances of the soldier ; he often came to
her father's shop, and gossipped and
smoked, until she grew used to him and
Edigio in a manner became domesti
cated. But when Raphael came along
and talked and cast amorous glances
-out of his beautiful eyes at Catterinella,
she soon began to detest the soldier, and
to feel all the joys and pains of first
love. Raphael not only rapidly insin
uated himself into her affections, but
with that amiability and grace which
he possessed, fascinated even the rough
baker himself. He was too much ab
sorbed in his art to spend much time
in her shop, but that very art afforded
him this readiest means of advancing
his suit.
Heasked Giuseppe to allow his daugh
ter to sit for him for her picture, and he,
though but a common, vulgir trades
man, still had enough respect for the
fine arts, then generally cultivated in
Rome, to consider the request as a com
pliment, and to comply. But lie made
Raphael promise never to mention his
compliance, both out of regard to Cate
rinella's fair fame, and for fear of the
rough soldier, Egidio, whose blind jeal
ously might prompt him to commit
some violence. When Cateriuella first
went to Raphael's studio it was secretly,
and accompanied by her mother, but so
frequent were the visits of Egidio, and
so ardent his passion for her, that it was
impossible for their absence not to raise
hissuspicions. One day when they had
left the shop, as they supposed unob
served, he watched them at a distance,
and seeing them enter a doorway and
ascend a staircase, followed them.
The door was inadvertently left open,
and Egidio entered, and stealing noise
lessly into the spacious studio, hid him
self behind some lumber. Unable to
control his fierce passion at seeing
Caterinella seated opposite Raphael,
Egidio, drawing his stilletto, rushed on
thepainter, who, at that instant, poising
his brush in air, was intently and pas-
sionately examining the Fornarina's
features. The woman, horrified at the
sudden apparition of Egidio, his drawn
knife and horrid looks, screamed aloud ;
but Raphael, unarmed as he was, rose
and faced his assailant. No sooner had
Egidio recognized Sanizo as the detested
rival whom he was about to murder—
Sanizo, whom he regarded as a deity,
who he had heard celebrated as the
wonder of the world—than he stood
transfixed, and the stilletto dropped
from his hand. A few inarticulate
words of excuse and prayers for pardon
fell from his lips.
Tranquilized by the humane looks of
Raphael, who gazed on him with a kind
of pitying astonishment, he endeavor
ed, in broken words, to explain the mo
tives which had induced this murder
ous conduct; he spoke of his love—lie
concealed not his jealousy. Determined
at the moment and on the spot to know
his fate, Egidio, deeply agitated, now
turned toward the affrighted Catteri
nella, who, scared by his fierce looks of
mingled hate, rage and love, scarcely
dared to raise her head, while, himself
shaking with ill-suppressed passion, he
implored her to be calm. He assured
her he would not injure her; but he con
jured her, by all that she held most
sacred, to tell him if she really loved
him.
Catterinnella, inspired by his passion
ate excitement, about to decide her fate,
trembled no more. She forgot her fears
of Egidio, his cruelty and jealousy ; she
forgot all save Raphael—the sun under
whose rays she expapded into a new
delicious life; Raphael, the god of her
idolatry, who stood pale and speechless
before her. Raising her eyes to his
face, she gave utterance to the love she
had long secretly cherished in her, and
confessed in faltering accents that he
was dear to her before all other mortals.
Egidio was struck dumb when he heard
his fate pronounced by the lips of her
he loved. Seizinghis knife, which had
lain on the floor, he rushed from the
studio. Relieved from the fascination
of Raphael's countenance and majestic•
presence, Egidio, clasping his weapon
in his hand, resolved to return and
murder him ; but when he remembered
her words—when he recalled those pas
sionate words in which she had con
fessed her love—his resolution again
changed.
" Why kill him when she loves me
not?" exclaimed he. Honor and de
spair strove in the breast of the savage
soldier ; love, hope, life—all have passed
in the possession of another, and that
other man so godlike that he could
scarcely, even in the wildest paroxysms
of his jealousy, wonder at her prefer
ence. His violent nature could not en
dure the torture of his soul, andin utter
despair, he plunged into his own breast
the weapon he had raised against San
zio.
The Text
A pious old lady, who was too unwell
to attend meeting, used to send her
thick-headed husband to church to find
out the text the preacher selected as the
foundation of his discourse. The poor
dunce was rarely fortunate enough to
remember the words of the text, or even
the chapter and verse where they could
be found ; but one Sabbath he ran home
in hot haste, and with a smirk of satis
faction on his face, informed his wife
that he could repeat every word without
missing a syllable. The words were as
follows:
"An angel came down from heaven,
and took a live coal from the altar."
" Know every word," said the hus
band.
"I am anxious to hear it," continued
the wife.
"They are nice words," observed the
husband.
"I'm glad your memory is improving,
but don' tkeep me in suspense, my dear,"
said she.
• " Just get your big Bible and I will
say the words, for I know them by heart.
I said them a hundred times on my way
home."
" Well, now, let's hear them."
" Ahem !" said he clearing his throat."
"An Injurt came down from New
Haven and took a live colt by the tail,
and jerked him out of the hangs."

edly—asked,T-ofrlaW,: by, various
_news::
papers in the country, in 'reference. to
the authonthip of the following lines.—
We can answer. They were composed
ley Mr. Samuel D. Moses,
of Tennessee,
for the Gallatin'(Tenn.) Courier, in the
spring of 1880. The Courier was edited
by the writer of these lines :
SOMEBODY'S SON.
Somebody's son was out last night, •
Brushing about the town; .
And, if I mistake not, he was tight—
." Tight as a Derby clown,"
I know he's considered a moral youth,
Above suspicion—but that
Is no reason—to tell the truth,
He - hadn't "a brick in his hat."
Daylight:morality often takes
Strange fancies into its head, -
And "plays the d—," or' jumps up snakes,"
When the public eye is in bed.
"My,/ son can't dance," somebody said,
" For never a lesson took he—"
But he danced last night when you were in bed,
And Twilight was there to see.
You may call it dancing, or not, as you feel,
Though for half an hour or more,
He danced or "Jigged " a " tangle-foot reel,"
In front of my °nice door.
"My son can't sing," somebody swears,
But he sung last night, I know,
As rough a song as a demon dares
To sing in the regions below.
My son don't imbibe," somebody thinks,
Well, may be he don't—but then,
That he acts very much like one who drinks,
Can be proved by a hundred men.
Yet something was tight—yes, drunk—last night,
So drunk it could hardly crawl—
, Pe haps 'twos the brim of a crowniess hat,
That I [build by my garden wall.
So, for fear I am wrong and somebody's right,
My hasty words I recall,
And say that the thing I saw last night
Was nobody's son—that's all!
Can a Mother Forget?
Can a mother forget? Not a morning,
noon or night but she looks into the
corner of the kitchen where you read
Robinson Crusoe, and thinks of you as
yet a boy. Mothers rarely become con
scious that their children are grown out
of their childhood. They think of them,
advise them; write to them, as though
not full fourteen years of age. They
cannot forget the child. Three times a
day she thinks who are absent from the
table, and hopes that next year at farthest
she may just "have her own family
there," and if you are there, look out
for the fat limb of a fried chicken, and
coffee which nobody but everybody's
own mother can make. Did Hannah
forget Samuel ? A short sentence, full
of household history, and running over
with genuine mother love, is tellingly
beautiful: "Moreover his mother made
him a little coat, and brought it to him
from year to year, when she came up
with her husband to the sacrifice."
A mother mourning at her first-born's
grave, or closing the eye of child after
child, displays agrief whose very sacred
ness is sublime. But bitter, heavier
than the death stroke is the desperation
of a son who rushes over a crushed
heart, into vices which he would hide
from even the abandoned and vile.
Napoleon was once asked by a lady
what, France needed for the education
of youth ; and the snort profound reply
was, "Mothers."
