Mr. Smart—Well, Mr. Sambo, how

- Blabk Elector (with dignity) Massa
Sambo'ana berry well, thank you, Sar.
'My. Smart—Glad to hear it, Mr. Sam

crop's coming on well.
Black Elector—Pretty well, Sar. Dis
white trash ain't no good much at work,
but we'll soon kick 'em into better
knowledge ob things, and ob deir privi

Mr. Smart—They ought to be glad to
take your money and do your work,
Mr. Sambo. By the way, you must

Black Elector—Hate exercise like the
debbil, massa. What's your name, sar?
What for you obtrude on a colored gen

Mr. Smart—No intrusion, sir, I trust.
My name is Rufus X. Smart, and I am
a friend of the Honorable Hominy Bus

guished support at the coming election.
Black Elector—Sar, if you check die
dig—discolored genelman—you'll make

skin. What you mean, sar?
Mr. Smart—No anger, Mr. Sambo.—
The Government of this almighty and
everlasting country has thought proper,
in its extraordinary enlightenment, to
invest you with the franchise. You un
derstand, lam sure. It has given 'you
a vote.
Black Elector—Dada lie, Sar. It hab
given me nuffin of the kind. Where is
it? Dere's my house. I give you leave
to go into a colored genelam's house and
look. If you find de vote, bring it here
directly minit.
Mr. Smart—l have not made myself
quite clear.
Black Elector—You seems a stupid
boss, dat's clear—yup, yup, yup, yup.
Mr. Smart (aside) I'd give five dollars
for five minutes leave to canvass him
with this strip of hippopotamus. I'd
obtain a genuine expression of his sen

a gentleman of America.
Black Elector—Ah! Now you talk
sensitive, Sar, quite sensitive, and me
proud to know yciu. Sit down, Sar, and
don't be bashful, we are all alike and
equil—all cakes out of the same oven,
only the colored genelam a cake which
am better done. Like cake and mo

Mr. Smart—Delight in it, I assure
you, Sir.
Black Elector—Den steal some, come

Mr. Stuart—Admirably clever, Mr.
Sambo. I have heard nothing so good
at the theater. You would realize fifty
dollars a night on the stage.
Black Elector—Dam low, dem actors,
Sar. And they am tied in the clock,
obligated to go and sing, whether iu
the humor or not, and whether 'em
drunk or sober. Dat a slavery which
no colored genelam could smit to, San
Mr. Smart—You are right, Mr. Sambo
and I am truly glad to hear you pro

friend, the Honorable Hominy Buster,
whose maxim is that freedom should
roll over the Universe, like the boister

Black Elector—]ou talk jolly well,
Massa. You may dam good pious
preacher, Sar. 'Tend up on dat stump
and preach, and dis colored genelam
give you half a dollar.
Stuart—l'll come to-morrow, and
do it for nothing ; to-day I have an en

like yett, Sir, a free and unfettered gen

has no master but himself.
Black Elector—Dat berry elegant

you can find it about the house, or any
where. Suppose some of dem young

crack over and make 'em find it.
Mr. Smart—Thank you, Mr. Sambo;
I'll call to-morrow and drive you to the
place of voting, and show you-all about

A Romantic Story
At the commencement of the present
century a young man made his appear
ance in Stratford, and spent a few weeks
at the tavern, which then existed to af
ford shelter to stage coach travellers.
Whence he came, and what his busi
ness, none could guess. Directly oppo
site the tavern stood the small cottage
and the forge of a blacksmith named
Folsom. .He had a daughter who was
the beauty of the village, and it washer
fortune to captivate the heart of the
young stranger. He told his love, said
he was from Scotland, that he was
traveling ineog., but in confidence gave
her his real name, claiming that he was
heir to a large fortune. She returned
his love, and they were married. A few
weeks thereafter the stranger told his
wife that he must visit New Orleans;
he did so, and the gossips of the town
made the young wife unhappy by
their disagreeable hints and jeers.
- In a few months the husband return
ed,. but before a week had elapsed, he re
ceived a large budget of letters, and told
his wife that he must at once return to
England, and must go alone. He took
his departure, and the gossips had anoth
er glorious opportunity to make a confi
ding wofnan wretched. To all but her
self it was a clear case of desertion ; the
wife became a mother, and for two years
lived on in silence and in hope. At the
end of that time a letter was received by
the Stratford beauty from her husband,
directing her to go at once to New York
with her child, taking nothing with her
but the clothes she wore, and embark
in a ship for her home in England.
On berarrival in New York she found
a ship splendidly furnished With every
convenience and luxury for her com
fort, and two servants ready to obey
every wish that she might express. The
ship duly arrived in England, and the
Stratford girl became the mistress of a
superb mansion, and, as the wife of a
baronet, was saluted by the aristocracy
as Lady Samuel Sterling. On the death
of her husband many years ago, the
-Stratford boy succeeded to:the title and
wealth of his father, and in the last edi
tion of the "Peerage and Baronetage"
he is spoken of as the issue of " Miss
Folsom of Stratford, North America."
When the late Professor Silliman visi
ted England some years since, he had
the pleasure of meeting Lady Sterling
at a-dinner party, and was delighted to
- answer her many questions abciut her
bkrthpiace in Connecticut.
--- RUM Different-Nations
The 4alda6ian rslandeis - eat alone.
They' retire into the most hinder parts
of their houses, ,
and then draw down
the cloths that serve as blinds to their
windows, thatthey may eat unobserved.
On the contrary, the islanders of the
Philippines are remarkably sociable.
Whenever one of them finds himself
without a companion to partake_ of his
meal, he runs till he meets with one,
and however keen his appetite may be,
he ventures not to satisfy it without a
guest. The tables of the rich Chinese
shine with a beautiful varnish, and are
covered with silk carpets very elegantly
worked. They do not make use
plates, knives and forks ; every guest
has two little ivory or ebony sticks,
which he handles very adroitly. A
Kamschatkan kneels before his guest;
he cuts an enormous slice from a sea
calf; he crams it entire into the mouth
of his friend.
A Chicago joker contributes the fol
owing to the Drawer. We hope it is
not a sample of Chicago husbands.
There lived on S Street, Chica
go, a hard-working man, who always
attended to business before pleasure.
In this he was right. One day his wife
was taken sick, and the next day she
died. The husband kept at his work as
usual, and after the funeral he returned
to his labors.
"How is this?" asked one of his neigh
hors. "Can't you stop to mourn a lit
tle ?"
" No, sir," was the reply. "Business
before pleasure."
And the old fellow *returned to his
bench.
All Agreed
A good deacon making au official
visit to a dying neighbor, who was a
very unpopular man, put the usual
question: .
" Are you willing to go, my friend ?"
"0, yes," said the dying man.
" I am glad of that," said the deacon,
" for all the neighbors are willing."
