A communication was read, announeim
the death of Rev. Mr. Boeluinger of Phil,
delphia.
The presence of the Rev. Mr. EseM, of the
Episcopal Church, was noticed. After sonic
consideration of defects in the returns of
ter-centenary offerings from certain con
gregations, Synod took up the special order
or the day, the report of the Committee on
Church Publication. 'Phis is composed of
a number of items, and the discussion of it
embraces the question of the manner in
Which the Church printim i z, and publishing
shall lie done; whethert mtrart or a
new establishment of its 11wu, since the
burning of Chambersburg has destroyed
the printing house. of the Church in that
town, with a heavy loss.
Synod discussed this report until the hour
of adjournment, without final dicision.
The lie of Foreign Missions will cele
brate their Anniversary tins evening in the
Ist German Reformed Church.
Tuesday Afternoon. --Synod continued
- the discussion ' during this afternoon, of the
. reporefrom the emmnittee on the Printing
establialment. This is an important sub-
ject to this body, inasmuch as all must be
started anew, and changes from the old
plan must be freely and fully considered.
The subject will be reported when the whole
is finally adopted.
Before entering on this business, Rev.
Dr. Gerhart read a report Irian the com
mittee appointed five years ago, to prepare
a new edition of the Heidelburg Catechism
for publication during the ter-centenary
year. The committee had completed this
work in the proper time, and it had been
published in the most handsome form, by
Chas. Scribner, of New York. The Cate
ellisin now presented to the church, in com
memoration of the Ter-centenary Year, is
a new English translation, published with
the old and later German and Latin text.
The business before Synod was, on mo
tion, laid aside to give an opportunity to
Rev. Dr. Currie, delegate front the Reform
ed Dutch I 'hurch„to take leave of this body.
Just before adjournment Rev. Prof. T. C.
Porter, chairman of special committee, sub
mitted resolutions of acknowledgment and
appreciation of the gift 'of 100 copies of
Giltillan oil the Sabbath, from the A. York
Sabbath Committee, through the Rey. Dr
Sehati, and re,ornmending to the ministers
of this Synod to draw special attention to
this subject .luring the year.

A SOLDIER'S TREA'r.MENT.-- - A soldier at
Vicksburg, Mississippi, br a letter to his
mother, who is a resident of this city, under
date of September 30th, speaks in the fol
lowing terms of the treatment he and other
private soldiers received at the hands of
those "dressed up in a little brief author.
"We are not on the boats now, but are
encamped at Vicksburg, and have been
since the 3d of September. They have con
solidated the cavalry and infantry. They
have taken our hones, saddles, pistols. sa
bres and carbines front us, and given us a
rifle and knapsack •to carry. I thought I
could eonie home this fall, but I cannot;
they would not let a poor soldier go to SE.
his parents, even if he was only a mote from
then;; but, niother, they have played the
dog with me long enough. I will suffer a
soldier's death before I give up to a set of
dogs that were lying limier feather-beds in
winter time, while I was standing picket on
the frontier many a night when the snow,
hull, rain, storm and wind were blowing.
Hive up to such a set. No, the blood of
your son should trickle front his heart first.
When a soldier isn't satisfied with the ra
tions given him, and says one word about
it not being enough, they send him for ten
days to No. 1 jail."
