The enemy's cavalry came across the river this
morning at daybreak, about two hundred and fifty
strong. They dashed rapidly up the tow-path, driv
ing in our patrols, and. attacked Company I, of thq
Sixth Michigan cavalry, who were on picket at
Seneca. - Our forces gradually,felt . baok, pursued bi
the 'enemy, to within three miles of Poolaridilet
The enemy then retreated to Elen!xce ' burned the
camp of th e Michigan company and turned,down
the tow-path and re-crossed. We lost fou men
killed, one badly and one slightly wounded. The
enemy lost on the field killed, one Lieutenant and
one

General Couch has assumed command of the De
partment of the Susquehanna. Be summons for the
defense of the State all citizens between the ages of
eighteen and sixty to organize Army Corps, embrac
ing cavarry, infantry and artillery, to serve during
the pleastire of the President or the continuance of
the war.
When not required in active serrioe to defend
the department tney will be returned to their homes,
subject, however, to the call of the commanding
general.
DARING ESCAPE OF REBEL OFFI..
CELLS.
BALTIMORE, June 12.
On Wednesday, the steamer Maple Leaf
left Fortress Monroe for Fort Delaware, with
ninety rebel officers. When near Cape Henry
Lighthouse, the rebels took possession of the
boat, sent the captain and crew below, and
steamed forty five miles below the lighthouse,
and sixty-five from Fortress Monroe, and
landed on the Virginia shore, in the boats of
the steamer. Twenty-six refused to go with
them, and the captain of the boat turned back
to the fortress and reported the affair to Gen.
Dix. Among those who escaped was Capt.
Semmes, a son of the captain of the pirate
Alabama. They did no injury to the boat.
HANGING OF REBEL SPIES
MURFREESBORO, June 13
Captain Thompson, of General Rosecrans's
staff, under a flag of truce, delivered the effects
of the two spies bung at Franklin, Tennessee,
to Lieutenant Colonel Webb, of the Fifty-first
Alabama, this evening. One of the party re•
ceiving the flag remarked, " So, you have
hung two of our spies ?" He then added
that one of them, Orton, was his particular
friend, and Inspector of Constructions on
Wheeler's staff; but as Orton was not
entitled to an adjutant, he did not know the
man Peters. He also admitted that the exe
cution was jut t id in accordance with mili
tary law.

LOST IN THE vitos.—Two young ladies
of Tuckerton were lost in the woods near that
place a short time since. They had taken a
horse and carriage and gone out in the after
noon for a short ride. They penetrated in
sensibly into the forest, which there extends
for many miles, became frightened, and drove
rapidly on the wrong road, in their alarm,
going farther from home. The harness be
came so broken as to be of but little service,
and the horses unmanageable. The citizens
becoming alarmed at their protracted absence,
turned out en masse at dark, and ultimately
found them in the recesses of the forest, six
miles from home, prostrated in body and mind,

my daughter will shortly be entirely recovered. She is

there is nothing I would not give to prrcure it. Yon may

self. I have been at the Lancaster Hospital for six months;
I had Ithenmailem when I went there, and was unable to
do anything. One of the inmates of the Hospital give me
three doses of your Bitters, and afterwards I felt much
better, and I have been taking them ever since. and feel as
if lam going to get sound and well. Your Bitters have
proved themselves to be a cure for me, and I am thankful
for it. Ido really think I, could not have lived this long
had I not got the Bitters.; I also had Gravel, which has
troubled me for a long time, of which I feel nothing of any
more. I suppose it must have been the Bitters that took
that away, as it works you say in that way. Indeed the
Bitters have been a God's blessing tome, and have restored

the Democratic party, and will, therefore, necessarily favor
the restoration of the Union as it was, and defend the
Constitution of the United States, and that of this COM
monwoalth.
It will freely and fairly discuss all legitimate subjects of
newspaper comment, including, of course, and pre,.emi.
nanny at this time, all questions connected with the
existing unhappy condition of our country.
It will fearlessly criticise the public acts of public ser
vants, and defend the legal and constitutional rights of In
dividual citizens of sovereign States, against assaults from
any quarter.
It will seek to awaken the minds of the people to a
proper sante of the actual condition of the Republic—to
present to them, truthfully, the fearful perils in which we
stand as a nation—to exhibit the magnitude of the task
that is before them, if they would check our downwar
prcgrees—and to inspire them with patriotic determination
to apply THE REMEDY for our national ills.
In brief, it will, in all things, aim to be the faithful ex
ponent of Democratic principles, and to render itself
worthy to be an organ of the Democratic party, under
whore auspices our country prospered so long and so well.
The restoration of that party—the party of the Constitu
tion and the Union—to power, in the legislative and execu
tive governmental branches of the States and of the Union,
we believe to be necessary to avert anarchy, and the utter
ruin of the Republic. To contribute to that restoration
will be our highest aim.
The News, Literary, Commercial, and other departments,
will receive due attention, and will be Bo conducted as to
make "Tim AGO" worthy of the support of the general
