WAR .NEWS- FROM VICKSBURG. CHICAGO, May 29. • The Times has a special dated In the field, near Vicksburg, on the 23d, at 9 o'clock P. M.," = • says : There has been no fighting to-day, (Saturday). Our troops are resting from yesterday's assault. Oar repulse was oomplete on all parts of the line, but no discouragement need be entertained of our, final tmcoess. We are intzenching ourselves and building rifle.‘ pits: The cavalry have been sent out towards Canton to asceotain the whereabouts of Johnston's forces. Oar loss yesterday was not far from thousand. The Tune's special Memphis despatch, of the 27th, says the steamer Sultana, from Young's Point, is reported lost. On Friday the Federal forces were repulsed at Vicksburg. The steamer City of Memphis, from the vicinity of Vicksburg on Monday, arrived to-day, and re ports General Grant as having captured every rebel redoubt. At one place it wee necessary, owing to the steep ness of the hill, to scale it with ladders. General Hovey led the assault. The rebels rolled shells down the hill at the Federals, which exploded amongst them making fearful havoc. The fighting was going on furiously when the City of Memphis left. The Federal losses are said to have been heavy. ANOTHER DESPATCH. (Special Despatch to the Bulletin..l CINCINNATI, May 29. Rumors and reports from Vicksburg are abundant. The latest definite intelligence is a brief despatch to the Commercial, dated.“ Ca the Field, near Vicks burg. May 23d," which says " there is no fighting to day. The troops are resting from yesterday's as. vault. Our repulse was complete on all parts of the line. Nu discouragement need be entertained as to our flOkl success. The city is closely invested and must succumb to our attack sooner or later. We are entrenching and building rifle' pits. Cavalry have been sent out towards Canton; to ascertain General Joe Johnston's whereabouts. Our loss yesterday Was not far from one thousand. It is tolerably certain that the works cannot be taken by assault. A regu. ler siege must reduce them. Two weeks will proba bly be consumed." Gen. Banks' army is reported coming up. The rebels report General Cheatham and Feather -stone wounded in one of the Mississippi fights, and General Johnston massing a large force at Black River Bridge- The report via Memphis, that Grant had captured every redoubt, is discredited. In the assault, at one place, it was necessary, owing to the steepness of the hill, to scale it with ladders. General Hovey led the assault. The rebels rolled shells down the...hill at the Federals, which exploded among them, mak ing fearful havoc. The Federal loss is said to have been very heavy on Sunday, the 24th. GENERAL JOHNSTON THREATENS GRANT'S Special despatches from Murfreesboro' say that Breokinridge and Crother's divisions are on their way South. Gen. Joo Johnston is rapidly receiving reinforce ments in the vicinity of Jackson, with the intention of attacking Grant's rear. He is reported to have said thai if Vicksburg holds out fifteen days, he will throw 100,000 troops into it, if it requires the relin. quishment of every foot of territory in his Depart insiot to effect it. From the Pittsburg Post THE'OATH OF TILE UNION LEAGUE The following is the oath of the Union League. and all those wh . o will not take it, and join that society, are neoessarily opposed to the government, at least so argue 'the dii apidatede partisan who ex pect, by the aid of their oaths and their other dark proceedings, to keep themselves in office. The dodge won't work—it is rather shallow—but here's the oath: I (with your name) do solemnly . ' swear, in the presence of God and these witnesses to support, pro tent, and defend the Constitution and Government of this United States, and the flag thereof, and aid in maintaining the laws of the United States, and to defend this State or District against any invasion, insurrection dr rebellion, to the best of my ability, without 'any mental reservation or vasion what ever. Furthermore, that I will aid and assist in electing true and reliable Union men, and none others, to all offices of profit and trust, from the low: eel tot . e highest, in town, county, State and general Government. And should I ever be called to fill any office, 1 will then and there faithtully carry out the objects and principles of this L., and further, that I will protect, aid and defend all true members of the U. L., and will never make known in any way or manner to any person or persons not members of the U. L , any of the signs, pass-words, proceedings, purposes, debates or plans of this or any other Council under this organization, except when en gaged in admitting new members into this organize tin, I place your right hand on the Holy Bible, etc..) and with my hand on the Holy Bible, Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America, under the seal of my sacred honor, I acknowledge myself firmly bound and pledged to the faithful performance of this, my solemn obliga tion. So help sac God: "Vetliandigliam's Address to the Ohio` De mocracy. MILITARY PRISON, 'I CINCINNATI. Onto, May 22, 1863. To the Democracy of Ohio : Banished from my native State for no crime save Democratic opinions and free speech to you in their defence, and about to go into exile, not of my own will, but by the compulsion of an arbitrary and tyrannical power which I cannot resist, allow me a parting word. Because despotism and superior force so will it, I go within the Confederate lines. I well understand the purpose of this order. But in vain the malice of enemies shall thus continue to give color to the cal umnies and misrepresentations of the past two years. ; They little comprehend the true character of the man with whom they have to do. No order of banishment, executed by , superior force, can release me from my obligations or deprive me of my rights as a citizen of Ohio and of the United States. My allegiance to my own• State and Government I shall recognize, wheresoever I may be. as binding in all things, just the same as though I remained upon their soil. Every sentiment and expression of attachment to the Union and devotion to the Constitution—to my country—which I have ever cherished or uttered, shall abide unchanged and unretracted till my return. Meantime, I will not doubt that the peo ple of Ohio, cowering not a moment before either the threats or the exercise of arbitrary power, will, in every trial, prove themselves worthy to be called freemen. C. L. VALLANDIGHAM 'HEADQUARTERS OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, May 26. The Richmond papers contain the following : CINCINNATI, May 29 A special dispatch to the Bulletin says: Vallan digham is the guest of Bragg. at Shelbyville. It is reported that Bragg telegraphed to Jeff Davis, as to what he should do with him. Davis replied, "If he'll take the oath of allegiance to the Confederacy, receive him; if not, send him bask." WAR OF THE LEAGUES.—The Republican " Leagues " are already quarreling. There are twe lets of these organizations—the " Loyal Leagues " and the " Union Leagues ; " the one going for Sew ard and the other for Chase. There is great rivalry and bitterness between them, and it is to be hoped that the fight will result as did that between the famous Kilkenny oats. This desideratum le now triumphantly secured by this ingenious intention. Many obvious advantages moot arise from the general use of this envelope. First—lncreased Safety by additional sealing; the stamp connecting the envelope and letter securely together • and this is never liable to be omitted, though the sticking of the flap la frequently neglected or Imperfectly done. Second—Security against Impertinent Intrusion; the letter and envelope being firmly attached by the stamps, and inclosure cannot be Inspected even If the flap be dare destinely opened. Thud—Safety against Abstraetiern of Valuable Inclo. Urea. If the flap be left unsealed, or opened with Mini ons intent, it will be impossible to open the letter and take thence bank notes and drafts without so mutilating the envelope as to insure detection. liburth,-Security for the free payment of the Postage; as the stamp, when once properly placed in this window, cannot be removed without its destruction. Rfth—Advantage therefore to the Government; by the effectual destruction of every stamp in its first nee. • Sixth—Facility to the Post Wilco Operations • by a tint. form location of the stamp in the upper right Land corner, which is the most convenient position for the Poet Ogles mark. ..tmosth—Verificetion of the Mailing; by securing on the letter itself the legal evidence of the time and place of it being mailed. This hue long been esteemed so desirable, that many prudent persons are constrained to dispense with the use of envelopes, that they may hate the poet mark on the letter; and others take the preasuHon to pin the envelope again on the letter for identification. Eighth—Certainty of the Date and Place on the Letter, which are so frequently omitted by writers in carelessness or hurry. Ninth—Ornamentation • which, though some may think of small importance, Cert ainly meets the approval of all persons of taste. Tenth—Cost. Notwithstanding the many and unrivalled advantages of the "Stamp Sealing Envelopes,. they will be furnished at a very small advance upon the prism of those not having the benefit of this patent Can be had at J. It will freely and fairly discuss all legitimate subjects of newspaper comment, Including, of course, and preiemi nently at this time. all questions connected with the existing unhappy condition of our country. It will fearlessly criticise the public acts of public seri Tants, end defend the legal and constitutional rights of In dividual citizens of sovereign States, against assaults from any quarter. It will seek to awaken the minds of the people to a proper senro of the actual condition of the Republic—to present to them, truthfully, the fearful perils In which we stand as a nation—to exhibit the magnitude of the task thatis before them, If they would check oar downward progress—and to inspire them with patriotic determination to apply TELE REXEDY for our national ills. In brief, it will, in all things, aim to be the faithful ex- • ponent of Democratic principles, and to render itself worthy to be an organ of the Democratic party, under whose auspices our country prospered EP long and so well. The restoration of that party—the party of the Constitu tion and the Union—to power, in the legislative and execu tive governmental branches of the States and of the Union, We believe to be necessary to avert anarchy, and the utter ruin of the Republic. To contribute to that restoration will be our highest aim. The News, Literary, Commercial, and other departdzents, will receive duo attention, and will be so conducted as to make "Tug AGE" worthy of the support of the general reader. Kir The many difficulties now surrounding an enter. prise of the magnitude of that in which the undersigned are engaged, require them to appeal to the public for a generous support, and ask for "TOE AGE" a liberal patron age and extended circulation. The present state of the preparatory arrangements war rants the expectation, that the first number of the Daily will appear before the close of the coming month, (Febru ary, ISM) The Weekly will be issued soon thereafter.
