cirotia; - find Col. Dougherty of the Bird's FobittrOo ps.
They were encountered by the rebels 7000 strong,
and fought every inch of their way to the enemy's
Damp; making sad havoc in the enemy's ranks.—
Col. Buford was the first to plant the Stars and
Stripes in the enemy's camp. Col. Dougherty's re
giment captured the rebel battety of twelve pieces,
twe of which were brought away: Col. Foulke 's men
suffered greatly, as they were in front of the batter
ies before they were taken.
After taking possession of the rebel camp, it was
discovered that the rebels were crossing over from
Kentucky, for the purpose - of attacking lie in the
rear. The order was given to return to the boats,
when our men were attacked by the reinforcements
of several thousand rebels front Columbus.
Another severe engagement took place, in which
our troops suffered seriously. The losses, as far as
ascertained up to a late hour last night, were as
follows: Thirtieth Illinois regiment, Col. Foulke
-160 missing, and - Major MoOlerken wounded and
taken prisoner:
The 21st Illinois Regiment has 140 missing.
Colonel Buford's regiment returned too late for us
to obtain any particulars of its loss. Col. Dougherty
of the Twenty-second Illinois regiment, is reported
to have been taken prisoner. Col. Lateen, of the
Thirty-first Illinois, is reported to be dangerously
wounded. Taylor's battery lost one gun. We have
250 prisoners, &number of whom are wounded. The
rebels had 300 killed. The ground was completely
strewn with their dead bodies. The rebel Colonel,
Wright, of the Thirteenth Tennessee Regiment, was
killed Gen. Cheatham commanded the rebels,G en
Polk being at Columbus. It is stated that General
Johnson, of the rebels, was wounded.
Thegunboats rendered efficient service in covering
our retreat, mowing down the rebels with grape.—
Some of oar own men ware killed by the fire. A
flag of truce left Cairo, this morning, for Columbus,
with from forty to fifty wounded rebels.
The Battle at Belmont, 310.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 9.
The War Department has received an °Medal tele
gram concerning the battle at Belmont, Missouri,
which generally confirms the newspaper statements.
It says that Capt. Bieloski, of Gen. McClern and's
stiff, was killed, and among other particulars, says:
"We fought all the way into the enemy's camp, imme
diately under the guns of Columbus, spiked two guns
and brought away two, together with 200 prisoners."
The Federal loss is stated at 300, that of the enemy
being much heavier. -
Later and Important.
CHICAGO, Nov. 9.
A special despatch to the Times, from Cairo, says
it is impossible to obtain anything like an accurate
report of the killed, wounded and missing in the
engagement at Belmont on the 7th.
It is estimated that twenty-five of the Twenty
second Illinois are missing.
The total missing are reported at three hundred
and fifty.
Of the Seventh lowa Col. Lanman was wounded,
but not dangerously.
Lieutenant Colonel Wendell killed; the Major
and Adjutant are missing, and the reported killed in
Logan's regiment is 35, and 47 wounded.
All but 44 of Col. Fouke's regiment answered at
the roll call, yesterday afternoon.
The loss in Buford's regimeist has not been ascer
tained, but it is supposed not to be heavy.
One hundred and twenty prisoners were taken.
All accounts concur in placing the rebel loss much
heavier-than our own.
Belmont has been abandoned by the rebels. They
have 150 prisoners, and acknowledge 350 killed, bat
would not permit the Federal officers who went to
Columbus with the flag of truce, yesterday, to visit
the place to which they conveyed their dead.
Farewell Interview between Gens. Scott
and McClellan.
When-Gen. Scott, was about leaving Washington,
Gen: - McClellan at the head of his staff proceeded to
an inner room, occupied by Gen. Scott, and remov
ing his hat from his head, bowed before the veteran
chief whom he had just succeeded.
Gen. Scott sitting, from inability to rise, extended
his hand to his successor and they talked for some
minutes with hands clasped. In this position Gen.
Scott, drawing McClellan nearer to him said :
" General, do not allow yourself to be embarrassed
by men who do not comprehend this great question.
Carry out your own ideas, act upon your own judg
ment and you will conquer, and the Government
will be vindicated. God bless you."
The young chieftan's only reply was :
" I thank you General, and will not forget your
counsel. May you be restored to health, and live to
see your prophecy fulfilled. God be with you.
Farewell."
Lieutenant General Scott
NEW YORK, Nov. S.
Gen. Scott received the Chamber of Commerce and
Union Defence Committee to-day. He spoke highly
of the President and Gone. McClellan and Ila Heck,
Baying that under the command of the two latter
and their Brigadiers he had no doubt that our armies
would be led to victory, and no doubt that they
would achieve an honorable peace within a few
months.
Political Mission of Distinguished Citi
zens to Europe.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.
Archbishop Hughes left New York for Europe on
Wednesday, and Mr. Thurlow Weed was to have left
by the steamer of to-day. It is understood that they
will be followed in a few days by Bishop Mc'keine,
Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Ohio, and the lion.
Edward Everett, of Massachusetts. The simultane
ous visit of these gentlemen to Europe seems to be
made with the approval of the Government, as they
all had recently been here in consultation with the
President and Cabinet.

far Age and Debility. --As old age eontes
creeping on, it brings with it many attendant infirmities.
Loss of appetite and weakness impair the health, and want
of activity makes the mind discontented and unhappy. In
cases where old age adds its influence, it is almost impossi
ble to add vigor and health, and although many remedies
have been tried, all have fulled, until literhave's Holland
Bitters were known and used. In every case where they
have been employed, they have invariably given strength
and restored the appetite. They have become a great agent
for this alone, and are used by many people who are suffer
ing from loss of appetite and general debility. In cases
of long standing chronic diseases, they act as a charm, in.
vigoratlng the system, thus giving nature another oppor
tunity to repair physical injuries.
