PRLAIIUM FOIL .1.4
In el-der to increase the already large circulation of the
KNICIIERBentIie, we. publish this month a splendid Line
engraving of Vrith's picture of ' Merry-Making in the
Olden,Time, which we shall present exclusively to the $3
subscribers to the Magazine for 1880, whether old or new,
The etthiett rrepresents the pastimes of our ancestors, and
is eminently of a genial, .domestic character. The plate,
engraved in .England at an expense of 2000 dollars, is
entirely new, measures twentytilve by nineteen and a halt
inches in the. contains thirty-nine ftguros,.and is beyond
comparison the finest work'of the kind ever offered as a
premium in this country.
The• engraving of Frith's picture of Merry-Making in
the Olden Time, represents the humors of an-English, troll
day in the county in those' good old times when the men
wore cocked-hats and kneekeeeches,- and the women stays
and hoops—a costume not essentially differing from the
corset and crinoline of the' present day. Almost in the
centre of •tbe picture and a little to the back-ground is a
country dance bn the green, with a hard-featured tiddler
perched on a high seat and another musician In a tie-wig. standinrbytalm, playing with - all their - might. On the
right twobonricing girls aregallyynlliug toward the danee
a graylhaired man, -who seem' vainly to - remonstrate 'that
his dancing days are over,' while a waggish Inds} child
pushes him forward from behind, greatly to, the amusement
of his spouse, whci is still sitting 'it the 'tea-table, from
whichrbe has been dragged.. On' theleft, tinder a magnifi
centilpreading 'oak, slt'ffiestpiire and his' wife, whom a
countryman witli his hat off is respectfulijlnviting to take
part , ln the 'denim. 'To 'the left of the 'squire Is a young
coupleon thegniss, to whom a gipsy with an infant on her
squider le telling their fortune. Over . the shoulders of
thW couple is keen a group engaged - in guolt-playlngr and
back of the whole is a landscape of gentle elopes and
copses:- • The picture has the expression of gayety: through
out and the engraving is splendidly executed. It•is fresh
from the burin of Homy not having-yet been published In
England.'
T - Elt.MS.—Twenty-five cezds,per number,. or $3 per an
num, tit adratico; two copies - $5; thrie copies - $6. The
poatage on the Magazine (twenty-four cents per annum) to
be paid in all cases at the office where it is received.

COMMENDATIONS:
From Hon. LEWIS D. Cumin:La, M. 0, Ohio.
My family and friends all concur in the opinion that the
(Newell) Picture is more lifelike than any thing they ever
saw. My likeness has been repeatedly taken by different
Artiste do various ways, but I have never yet had one
which presents so true to nature, all the features and ex
pressions of countenance as this.
From Hon. 11, JOT Models, late Ministee to Italy.
The exquisite finish, beauty and softness of your por
traits, conjoined with their durability of color and faith
fulness as likenesses, cannot fail to commend them to the
attention and patronage of all who appreciate true art.
Having occasion for a portrait, I procured one from Mr.
Robert Newell, of the City of Philadelphia, a miniature in
Oil- Colors, under the new process discovered by him, and
take great pleasure in expressing the satisfattion given
me. not only by the accuracy of the likeness, but Its artis
tic finish in all respects, and recommend him - to the pa
tronage of those disposed to encourage the beautiful art.
