--- Asis- W hat Is Life '-- Ask this question
of the forests, which teem with sturdy life. There
stand veterans of iteuturial ages. rearing their rugged
and fa,reaching arms aloft as if in deprecation of the
ignorance of mankind as to the means of preserving
health and establishing longevity. For the tree !lea
as surely and as distinctly as you do. To kill it you must
strike deeply into lts heart, and then It dies relnctautly
and with many theoretical struggles. Life, everything
has life, even to the poor sponge and the trodden down
pebble. Bow beautiful is the economy 'of health. How
simple the methods of pielonging life, and preserving it
from the assaults of the emissaries of our arch enemy,
Death! Unlike the lesserdiving things of the world, we
indulge is many hsbits that poison the blood, weaken the
muscles, waste the flesh, stultify the mind, rob the nerves
of their electrical forces, and, after keeping us invalids
for weary years, finally consign us to premature graves.
A life half lived out is like a fortune thrown into the
fathomless ocean. It is a boon priceless but useless. How
careful then should we be never to get sick ; but if, by
any ndschance, we bane become ill, how earnestly should.
we seek to recover. ' D Clots who go exclusively by "the
books," and who practice medicine as it was..practiced
when our gtandmothms were children, are not the persons
to recover us. It in the progressive doctor—the man alive
to the requirements of the age—the man who is neither
too Idle nor too old fogyish to study for the benefit of his
fellows, and to give them a spcific remedy—the result of
his 451—that we must consult. And the product of such
study and sacrifice is Ds. O. PFIELPS Beewses famous
ACACIAN BALLSitta I Almost everybody has heard of it—how
It heals the tubercles in the lungs, strengthens the weak
stomach, clothes the wasted muscles with their pristine
fullness, imparts purity and color to the impoverished
blood, renovates the torpid and dying liver, electrifies
into beautiful vigor and activity the shattered nerves,
silences the incessant cough, and makes the invalid sound,
buoyant, strong, cheerful, and useful. The ACACIAN BAI,

WIFE
' 3T THE BARD OP TOW HAIL.
A Mr. Blank, who had a wife,
A vixen, christened "Carrie,"
Went 10, one night, that be might see
Some borsea tamed by ,Rarey.
He saw the plan, and swore with oaths
As thick as drops then raining,
That he -would break his vicious wife,
By Barey's way of training.
He bought a strap, and then went home
To greet his household Tartar;
He said, " My nag, I've suffered
But I'll not die a martyr.
"I'll put this strap upon year feet,
That you may do no kicking,
And then P.l break your will, or bones,
With one well•needed licking."
"You will I" replied his lady bold—
By what he said made bolder—
" Take that 1" and she "let Hy her left,"
Directly "from the shoulder."
Her husband dropped and then she seised
The strap for her intended—
The stripes he felt, and stars he saw
Before the matter ended.
He screamed and begged—hie lady said,
.If you would make your Carrie
A loving wife who would not need
The training used by Rarey,
"Arise, and go to TOWER Ma y
And, while repenting deeply
Of wrongs to me, of Bennett buy
A snit of clothing cheaply I"
He did, and happy as a lord,
He now declares to Carrie,
That wives can never broken be,
As horses are by Remy.

We are happy to inform our fellow, citisens that there is

Madeira Sherry and . Port Wine, Scotch and Irish Whis

to-any in this country. He also hid three hirge cellars,
filled with Brandy, Wine, ',tr., in casks, under Custom
Hone key, ready for bottling. Mr. , Woz.rs's 'sales of
Schnapps last year amounted to one hundred and eighty
thousand dozen, and we hope in lees than two years he
may be equally succeisefid with his Brendle* and Wines.
Ills Nosiness merits the patronage of every lover of his
species. Private families who wish pure Wines and

blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter,. which. in
the lung% liver and internal organs, is , termed

the energies of life, so that scrofulous cenatita

quently,. vast numbers perish by :disorders
which; althongh.not scrofulous *Uri:tutu%
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin dii9ntly
in this scrofulous contamination ; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from at
are aggravated by the 'same cause. "
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their health is - undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in •
- AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparffla,
the most eilbctuar reined y which the medical
skill of our times can' devise for this even ,
where prevailing and fatal malady. ..It is crat„,
bined from the most active remedials that have
been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the
System from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only scrofula, but also those other ailbo
dons which arise from it, such as Eaurrivs
and SKIN DISEASES, ST. ANTHONY'S FIRE,
ROSE, or ERYSIPELAS, PIMPLES, PUSTULES, BLAINS and Boils, Torons, TirrrEa

indeed, ALL COSiIrrAINTS ABASING MOM VITIA
TED OR IMPURE BLOOD. The popular belief
in impurity of the blood" is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in
contaminated constitutions. •
Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
are so composed that disease within the range of
their action can rarely withstand or evade them
Their penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
and invigorate every portion of the human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring
its healthy vitalities. As a consequence of these
pr9erties, the invalid who is bowed down with
pain or physical debility is astonished to find leis
health or energy restored by a remedy at once so
simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day complaints
of every body, but also- many formidable and
dangerous diseases. The agent below named is
pleased to furnish gratis inT . American Almanac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the following complaints: Costive
ness, Heartburn, Headache arising from disordered
Stomach, Nausea, Indigestion, Pain in and Morbid
Inaction of the Bowels, Flatulency, Loss of Appe
tite, Jaundice, and other kindred complai nts, arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
of its functions.

FOR THE RAPID CURE OP
Coughs, Colds, Influenza, Hoarseneis,
Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump.
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous are the cases of its cures, that almost
every section of country abounds in persons pub
licly known, who have been restored from alarming
and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its
use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues are known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote to employ
for the distressing and dangerous affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate.
While many inferior remedies thrust upon the
community have failed and been discarded, this
hasgained friends by every trial, conferred benefits
on the afflicted they can never forget, and pro
duced cures too numerous and too remarkable to
be forgottenrt
