ment to the splendid Hi,tqry of Latin Christianity, by
Henry Hart Milman, which Messrs Sheldon & Co., of New

glory of Houghton's famous Riverside Press. It echoes
the commendations of t.resrott. Everett. and all the learned

graceful and flowing diction." We can pronounce with
fairness on the singular fascination of this splendid work

The same publisher, Boston, (Lippincott, here,) issues a
little work of great value to all who eat. What We Eat, is
a plain and well written account of the most common
adulterations of food and drink, with simple tests by which
many of them may be detected. The practical value of
- this volume should find it many purchasers. Dr. Hoskins,
the author, has devoted much attention to the subject, and
'his remarks extended net merely to the villsinons stuffs
- with which liquors are adulterated, but also to the poisons
found in tea, coffee, flour, bread, spices, butter, meats, etc.
Furnished at a low price it should have a very wide circu

Messrs. T. R. Petorsou & Bro's publish this week Frederika
Bremer's captivating new books of travel entitled Life in
the Old IThrid, or Two Yearain Switzerland and Italy, in
two handsome duo decline volumes. They print it from
advance sheets and from Mary Hewitt's own manuscript
purchased at a large cost. The same plastic power and
picturesqueness of des^ript ion evidenced in her novels may
be found in this very entertaining record, which abounds
no only in pictures of scenery, but in sketches of life and
manners, in poetical sympathies, and delicious reveries, the
whole united by a thread of romance as interesting as the
pl,,t of a novel. We had intended specifying son - - of the
scenes and sketches which particularly please us, but we
find them to he so numerous that we can only refer the
reader to the book itself. We can assure him he will thank
as for directing him to it.

As an instance of the way people who voted
for Lincoln are waking up to the terrible
realities of driving our customers from us, we
cite the following : " A gentleman of our
acquaintance met a mechanic who had voted
for Lincoln. • Well,' said he, ' how goes the
times?' ' Ah,' said the mechanic, bad

:no prospect of any.' Well, why did you vote
.for Lincoln ?" Because I believed what they
told me, tht.t it would do no harm to the conic

I would cut - my head gif before I would do it.'
So you begin to see your folly,' said our
friend. 'See it l' replied the mechanic, bitterly,

little ones would be as well cared for this
winter as the southern slave, and I would be

GREAT SNOW STORM IN EUROPE. —The ad

one of the most severe snow storms ever
experienced. .Accounts of its ravages have
been received from the United Kingdom, I
France and Italy. Mr. Lowe, the well known
meteorologist, reports that the cold which
.ensued was perhaps the.most qxtraprdipary
ever known in England. On ChristmaaAlay,
the thermometer was eight degrees below zero
near. London, and elsewhere it is reperked as
having been still lower. The rivers were full,
of floating ice, and skating was as common in
London as in New York. The quantity of
snow which fell in places is said to have ex—

travelled over all Western and Southern
LEurope. At Turin the Raumer thermetneter

parallel of latitude as Montreal ; but its win
