THE HAUNTED BACHELOR
BY RICHARD DRHUGH.
I sit in a haunted chamber,
('Tis one of a set of three,)
In an old and gloomy Temple,
Facing a huge plane-tree.
A seedy old tree, and dismal,
Hung over with worsted balls,
That bob at my darkened window
Like tufts upon funeral palls.
'Tis a black look-out on all sides,
Wherever the gaze is met;
The fountain down in the court-yard
Spirts with a ghost-like jet.
There are chimney-sweeping sparrows,
With tails not worth their salt,
The very black wine I am drinking
Was fetched from a neighboring vault!
At my cheerless chimney corner,
All grimy with years and smoke,
I try—with an ardent spirit—
To kindle a flame from Coke;
Or, by polishing up my Blackstone,
To catch an enlivening spark,
Thrown out by its deep reflections:
But it leaves me still in the dark !
In this gruesome habitation
I am haunted night and day
By a tempting female vision ;
It may be a witch or fay.
I'm a terrible - dunce at Eli-lore,
And dire not assign her class,
But I'm sure she isn't a mermaid,
For she never looks in the glass.
And her dark hair never wants combing,
'Tis glossy as ebon sheen,
Encased in a snug silk bonnet,
Not coral nor seawood green.
She can't be a moaning Banshee
Her voice is too soft to howl !
As she's eating my living heart out,
She can't be a death-fed Ghoul.
I've beard about Gnomes and &ebbelds
Who tempt me under the earth,
With promise of gold and jewels,
Of treasure and treasure's worth.
Bribes, my familiar syren
Ne'er breathes a word about:
She owns she has not a farthing,
But can live upon love, without.
There's a drudging kind of Goblin
I have read of in Milton's page,
Who will spread•you a splendid breakfast
For a very modest wage.
Ono morn when the milk was curdled,
And the coffee a witch's broth—
She came to my ear and whispered,
' , You should let me lay your cloth!"
Then 1 thought that she might be kindred
To that dairyman rough and grim;
But 1 saw that the fair sprite shuddered
To find herself classed with Aim.
would drudge and toil to serve you," •
(And her eyes with pearl-drops stream ;)
"But not for a poor night's lodging,
Or a paltry bowl of cream :"
One morn 1 awoke and saw her
Sitting beside my bed,
Mending my old worn slippers
With worsted of green and red.
"Oho !" I cried, "1 have caught you,
You Irish Leprehaun !
Mending the holes in a poor man's shoes"
1 clutched, and the shape was gone.
Another awakening vision,
We bad watched in the night too deep;
1 ..1 had fallen a-bed all weary,
My clothes in a shapeless heap ;
-Books upon chair and sofa;
Bottles and pipes on floor;
Never a key in padlock;
Never a bolt on door.
Feverish, tossing, groaning,
I lay, till a magic balm
Bathed like a dew my forehead :
Up I arose all calm.
There was my ruffled chamber,
Orderly, prim as new,
As the fair sprite vanished and said with a smile,
"Naught to what I can do!"
Syren, Brownie, or Pixie,
Helpie, Naiad, or Elf,
She will win me away from this gloomy life,
Away from this reckless self.
I will follow where'er she beckons—
Through fire, o'er land or sea;
For never was fairy tempter
Like the spirit that beckons me !
A JAPAN BELLE.
A recent East Indian traveler thus
sketches her :
I saw a young girl standing, fan in
hand, at an open door, reading. She was
simply clad in a loose crape half-petticoat,
half dressing-gown sort of dress, reaching
as far down as the ankles, and bound by a
sash of yellow silk around the waist. Her
feet, which were small and beautifully
formed, rested on the, common high straw
sandals of the country. Over this dress,
which left the bosom partly uncovered,
she wore a light cream-colored open jacket,
of a Muslin texture, with wide sleeves
extending a little below the elbow ; her
soft black hair was beautifully drawn back
from off the forehead, and bound in a
peculiar cluster at the back of the head,
where it was held by two gold pins, one of
great length, and with a scorpion-like de
vice attached to it, and which moved to
and fro with every motion of its wearer.
Her complexion was bright and pale, much
more so than the Chinese ; her features
animated and expressive, and her teeth
white, and as finely formed as her entire
figure. By the latter. I saw that she was
unmarried—the invariable Japanese cus
tom being, that on the marriage of every
female the teeth are dyed black, and, in
some cases, the eyebrows shaven off.
I halted nearly in front of where she
stood ; she did not look " piqued," and
turn away as the fair damsels of my own
country would have likely done; but she
favored me with a steady gaze, and smiled,
though I could scarce detect the movement
of a feature, while her eyes, like souls of
eloquence, glowed in fascinating beauty.
She was reading a book; I saluted her
with a low bow ; she returned the compli
ment by a somewhat similar movement.
Observing my curiosity to see the "book
which she held, she handed it to me. It
was thick, and of nearly the quarto size;
and letter press was mixed with numerous
wood-cuts—a common circumstance in
Japan, as I subsequently ascertained,
where nearly every book published abounds
with numerous illustrations. In weight
the book was exceedingly light, and the
cover-was of a very thick, colored paper,
highly ornamented, the external picture
being that of a crucifixion ; the paper was
printed on one side only, and left uncut,
so that the printed sides were alone pre
sented to the eye. The work, one of an
ordinary kind, was of excellent typography.
Of its ordinary merits the young_ lady
might have formed an opinion ; but being
anything but a Japanese, I could do no
such pleasant thing."
fig — A boy being praised for his quick
ness of reply, a gentleman " observed—
cc When children are so very keen, they
generally become stupid as they advance
in years." The . lad immediately replied
L— cs What a very keen boy , yoti must have
tt cc Why Tom, thy dear fellow, how
04,y0n look." ;
dare say, for the fact is, I never was
smoldobefore,M my life." •
