THE FATE OF SIR JOHN FRANKLIN

is the intelligence brought hy the .Canada,
fully confirming the fate, of Sir .John
Franklin, and making public the last records
of the ill-fated expedition. Sir John Frank
lin sailed on his Arctic voyage in May, 1845.
lie was last heard from in July of the same
year. Helios ui' his party were subsequently
found among the Esquimaus, who reported
seeing some of his men alive in the spring of
1850, and finding the dead bodies some
months later in the season. The screw
steamer Fox, sent out in quest of tidings of
the Franklin expedition, has returned to
England, with the record of the abandonment
of the Erebus and Torrur in April, 1848.
The record also states that Sir John Frank
lin died June 11, 1847.
For years no one has doubted that the
Franklin expedition was entirely lost. Mean
time his wife, w r ith a devotion, perseverance
and self-sacrifice that is world known, has set
on foot and encouraged one expedition after
another to make search for her husband.—
Her fervent appeals and her determined
example have aroused a wide spread sympathy,
and chivalrous men in England and in
America have freely given time, treasure,
health, and life itself to further her plans to
reward, if possible, her steady faith and
constant love, with intelligence of a positive
import. She has now the melancholy satis
faction of knowing that Sir John Franklin
died a year before the failure of the expedition,
and three years before the hours of despair
and suffering, when the Arctic Winter closed
in upon the last remnant of the hardy, heroic
men, who have given their names to immor
tality.
Sir John Franklin was born April lGth,
1786, and was consequently G 1 years old at
the time of his death. In 1801 he served as
a midshipman at the battle of Copenhagen.
In 1802 and 3 he served in the expedition to
explore the coast of Australia. In the war
of 1812 he was wounded in an engagement
with gun-boats at New Orleans. In 1818 he
made his first expedition to the Arctic seas.—
In 1819 he commanded an overland expedi
tion from Hudson’s Bay to the Artie Ocean.
In 1825 he commanded a second overland
expedition. In 1829 he was knighted. In
1830 he rendered important service to the
Greeks, then struggling for independence. In
1836 he was made Governor of Van Dieman’s
Land, where he remained till 1543. In 1845
he started on the expedition from which he
never returned.
La. Mountain on the Upper Currents.
—ln giving an account of his late hazardous
ascension, in company with Mr. Haddock,
La Mountain states that at a height of about
three thousand feet the balloon struck, the
northeastern current, and was driven along
at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour, with
a rapid ascent. The current was one of great
depth, and the balloon went up to a height of
three and a half miles without losing it.
After reaching that altitude, it took a more
easterly course ; and he found the current so
steady that he believes if he had maintained
the altitude of two and a half miles, he could
have crossed the ocean in thirty six hours,
without using any more ballast than in mak
ing an ordinary local ascension. It was not
until it descended into the local currents that
it was carried in a northerly course.

$5.25@0.75 for extra and fancy; the inspections for the
quarter amount to 113,405 hbls., a decline of 43.044 bids.,
as compared with the same period last year. Rye Flour
and Cornmeal quiet at $4.25 for the former and $3.75 for
the latter. The demand for wheat is limited; sales of
4,000 bushels Red at $1.25 and White at $1.35. Bye iu
demand at 00 cents for Peuna., but no inquiry for South
ern. Corn is less active: 5,000 bushels prime yellow sold
at 95 cents, afloat. Oats are in demand; 3,000 bushels
prime Southern sold at 44c. Whisky advancing with sales

grove, Mary Malooe and Ellen Dougherty, conditioned for
the payment to them of such amount of damages as they

Dance fixing tbe hours for holding public marketß in
the city of Lancaster,” passed December 7, 1858 :
Beit ordained by the Select and Common Councils of
the City of Lancaster, and it is hereby ordained,
That, from and after the twelfth day of October, 1859, to
the first day of April next, inclusive, and thereafter from
the first day of October to the first day ot April, inclusive,
in each and every year, the public markets, now author
ized to be held in the City of Lancaster, on Wednesday
and Saturday of each week, shall commence at right o’clock
in the forenoon, aud continue as provided for in the ordi
nance to which this is a supplement, and that so much of
the said ordinance as is hereby altered, be and the same is
hereby repealed.

next, the undersigned Executors of the Will of Gen. David
Miller, late of the City of Lancaster, deceased, will sell by
public veudue, at John Michael’s Hotel, in North Queen
street, Lancaster, the following described real estate, late
of said deceased, to wit:
No. 1. A two-story BRICK DWELLING MOUSE with
Back Building, and lot or piece of ground belonging there
to, situate on tbe east Bide of Lime, sonth of Orange streot,
