SONNET TO THE BLUE BIRD.
Sweet messenger of Spring, complaining bird,
How from the budding top of yonder elm,
That hangs o’orwaving thee, I’ve stood and heard,
With throbbing heart, thy embassy of love.
Sweet bird! art thou commissioned to our realms,
Ambassador to cheer the wasted grove,
To tell the daisy when to lift its head,
To whisper to the tulip that 'tls time
With fearless smile to leave a wintry bed;
Or dost thou sing to wake the red-breast up,
To rouse the sleeping songsters to their chime,
And tell them all, the nipping frost is o’er?
Oh, if you oome for this, sweet bird of Spring,
Weloomo, thrice welcome, for the news you bring.
stand* firm.
BT FRANCES DANA GAGS
There are momenta when life’s shadows,
Fall all darkly on the soul;
Hiding stars of hope behind them
In a black impervious scroll;
When we walk with trembling footsteps,
Scarcely knowing how or where
The dim paths we tread are leading,
In our midnight of despair.
Not a ray to cheer us onward—
Not a gleam from out the past—
While the roar of clashing waters
Comes to us upon eaoh blast;
Ay! another step may plunge us
In the dread abyss below;
And—another step may save us
From the very depths of woe.
Stand wo firm in that dread moment —
Stand we firm, nor shrink away;
Looking boldly through the darkness,
Wait the coming of the day ;
Gathering strength, while we are waiting
For the confliot yet to come;
Fear not, fail not, light will lead us
Yet in safety to the home.
Firmly stand —though sirens lure thee;
Firmly stand—though falsehood rail;
Holding Justice, Truth and Mercy,
Die we may—but cannot fail;
Fail! —it is the word of cowards ;
Fail!—the languago of the slave ;
Firmly stand, till duty beckons;
Onward, thon e’en to the grave 1

PATENT AMBROTYPES—The sub
scribers having purchased the exclusive right of Lan
caster city, are enabled to offer to the public a new style of
Pictures, far exceeding, in beauty and durability,.any ever
before made. These pictures are not reversed, as daguerreo
types areand may be seen in’anylight. They also possess the
rare property of being imperishable; being’hermetically
sealed between glasH plates, which is secured by Letters
Patent, in the United States, Great Britain and France,
and practised in Lancaster city by T. d? IP. CUMMIXGS
only, over Sprecher 4 Bro.’s New Store, North Queen st.,
Lancaster.
EXPLANATION.
The term AMBROTYPE, by which these Pictures are
designated; is derived from the Greek word Am broths, sig
nifying indestructibility, permariency, Ac. The Picture'is
taken upon plate glass, to which another plate of corres-
Eonding size is secured with an indestructible cement, by
y which the picture will retain its original brilliancy
for ages; it will not corrode by acids, nor be injured by
water or climate. It is bold in its effect, beautiful in tone
surpasses any thing in the gradations of light and shade!
and may be seen in any light. The public are cautioned
against imitations made on single plates of glass , with the
black varnish in immediate contact with the Picture.—
Buch are not permanent, as the varnish must crack and
destroy the Picture.
AMBROTYPE STERESCOPES MUST BE SEEN,
to be appreciated—the relief being fully as perfect as life.
Citizens and Strangers are Invited to call at the Ambro
type Gallery of the undersigned, and examine specimens
before they procure Pictures elsewhere, a* they are
insured of polite attention,
