THE WESTERN TORNADO
The Weitern papers give accounts of a great
storm and !gale which occured in that section
of the country on Friday week. The Columbus
Statesman, issued the next day, says:
" About eight o'clock last night a most
furious thdnder storm began so suddenly and
so violently that Van Amburgh's Pavilion
was prostreted betore hundreds of the people
present could escape. There was screaming
and shouting, fright and confusion worse con
founded. Ve have not heard that any person
was injured, though that all could escape
without briiises or suffocation would be almost
a marvel.
The hurricane struck the city of Peoria, Illi
nois, at about 5 o'clock in the evening. In the
twinkling of an eye fifteen or twenty houses
were unroided, every church spire in the city
was blown down, three canal boats loaded
with lumber sank. and the steamer Oliu, with
twenty-one passengers on board, made a com
plete wreck, her cabin being blown entirely
away. And what seems re Illy miraculous; is
the fact that but one life was lost in all this
furious disorganization of matter. It is said
that a little child was lost from off the wrecked
steamer. The lumber in the yardit was blown
all over the city, the gas lamps were all blown
down, and, the signs were sent flying in every
direction ; 1 windows and cable ends were
smashed in, whole traim of cars were blown
off the tritak, mid the beautiful college build
ing upon the bluff utterly demolished. Our
inhirmant Was obliged to • take refuge in the
court house square to avoid the general
traction Which threatened the city, and to
escape the flying signs, hoards, }sixes and
other missiles with whi It the stir was filled."

ous class of people known as professional rafts
men, to rejoice at are interp,sition of Providence
which is to them really a Gtid send, and of
immense Value and convenience to the coun

We have been informed by persons familiar
with the quantities of timber now cut in the
swamps of the Yoz•a, and its tributaries, that
at a low eStimate, at least live millions &HA re
will be saved and brought into market by this
rich in the river.

THE NEW JERSEY IMPROVED
REAPING AND MOWING MACHINE.
The subscriber now offers to the farmers of Lancaster
and adjoining counties one of the best combined Machines
in use. It hae stood the test for five years—giving entire
satisfaction to all who have used it. It is capable of cut
ting from ten to fifteen acres of gnus or grain per day,
with one pair of horses. Lewis Curts, of Salem, is willing
to qualify that be cut twenty one acres of grass with one
team of horses in one day. Hundreds of other names could
be got if it were necessary. This m.,chine was sold last
year in this and ether counties, and extensively in Now
York and New Jersey, and was preferred above all other
machines wherever wed, both for reaping and mowing.—
It has been used from year to year with less repairs than any
other machine. Owing to the scarcity of money the price has
been reduced from last year, so that any farmer can now
secure one of the best machines that can be produced.
The agents who sell these machines are persons who
have used them and are willing to recommend them to
other farmers who are the beet judges of the machines—
not mere agents selling for a per tentage, and willing to
cram anything down the throats of farmers.
These machines are made at my shop in Bound Brook,
New Jersey, where I have constantly on hand Horse Pow
ers, Corn Shellers, Cut tivetors and all kinds of farming im

Bidders are referred to the commandants of the respective
yards for samples, instructions, or particular description of
the articles; and. all other things being equal, preference
will be given to articles of American manufacture.
Every offer, as required by the law of 10th August, 1846,
must be accompanied by a written guarantee, the form of
which Is herewith given.
Those only whose offers may be accepted will be notified.
